broken timing belt

My timing belt broke, the shop is trying to replace it and see if it will run OK again. But if the engine is damaged i am considering getting the valves re-machined , what am i looking at cost wise for this? Like to know what im getting into, not get screwed over with some insane price.

Engine make and model ? so it can be determined whether interference top end or not if latter just replace timing belt if former mashed head? damaged pistons that will fail later and wreck motor who knows done the later hole in block impressive lol

Better to have the head off and do a visual before spending too much, even with a new belt and if the engine ran it may have done damage that will only show up later on causing more cost to you...

Thanks to the OP for posting as reminded me my Triton diesel is approaching 100k kms.

 

Before I ask the dealer does anybody have an idea of what the replacement and fitting cost for a new belt should be?

And change the tensioner at the same time - no matter what they say. Cheap insurance.

Firstly - No idea if there is even a light.......

Second the only reason i knew about it was because a guy I know has a similar vehicle and mentioned it to me that he had it done. Prior to that I did not know and the garage where it is serviced has not told me.

 

@canthai55 what exactly is the tensioner?

 

Anybody have an idea on costs?

Very rarely specialist tools are needed.

My Toyota Hilux here i've done myself with nothing more than good quality sockets and spanners.

And i'm not even a car mechanic (but a qualified fitter turner).

Less than a day's job inc removing the rad out of the way and replacing the tensioner.

Total cost was less than 3k with genuine Toyota parts.
I'm also wary of main dealer shops here for quality of work & extortionate pricing.

I prefer quality independents.

For the Hilux there are even English language How To videos on YouTube, which helped me enormously.

Re the OP, with a petrol 4 banger Honda - if that motor is not damaged you are a very, very lucky man.

Possible scenarios - cracked head, smashed valves, piston crown damage, bent con rods, possible crank damage.

Rod and crank damage may well not show up until later - depending on how high RPM was when the belt let go.

The other possible scenario is that there will be no damage.  The belt on my H22A broke while I was driving an there was no "interference damage", had the belt replaced and all was good.

This is why I was asking as when I was initially told a while ago the guy was talking about a figure north of 10k.

 

I have had no technical issues with the main dealer in 7 years (or perhaps I have just been lucky) but If someone could recommend a "quality independant" in Pattaya then I would certainly compare.

Well that at least was the lucky part. Changing the belt straight off is an option it just means that if any minor damage was done that does not actually stop the engine from running could well develop into serious issues later on

 

It's an unknown unless you take off the head. So you have just make your own mind up and go your own way

 

At idle you have the best chance of no damage having happened...

 

Ps... never had an issue so far with Toyota Pattaya on the road leading out from Naklua side, always been pretty good (except for aircon work).....

rolling the dice with only timing belt/water pump. 3k baht, supposed to have car back today. if its running and driving im happy, cant expect perfection from a 25 year old vehicle.
