BANGKOK (NNT) - The government is making several payments related to farmers income guarantee campaigns, starting with oil palm farmers today (1st October), and rice farmers from 15th October. The Deputy Prime Mininster and Minister of Commerce Jurin Laksanawisit, held a video conference ensuring the preparedness of all agencies for transactions.

Enrolled oil palm farmers will receive their first payment for pricing differences in the government’s farmers’ income guarantee campaign. The government’s past 45-day pricing record has averaged 2.68 baht per kilogram, meaning farmers will receive a subsidy of 1.32 baht per kilogram of their harvest, limited to the harvest of up to 25 plots for each farmer. In the campaign, a farmer producing oil palm fruit on 25 plots who achieved the average harvest of 363 kilograms per plot will receive 11,987 baht subsidy in this campaign.

Farmers of five rice types enrolled in the government farmers income guarantee campaign will start receiving their payments on 15th October. The pricing to be used for the calculation will be averaged from the daily pricing over the past 15 days.

The DPM and Commerce Minister said today the campaign guaranteeing income for farmers of oil palm, rubber, tapioca, and maize affected by oversupply and lower pricing, will mean that affected farmers have two streams of income, one from the sale of their harvest, and another from the government which has set up pricing guarantees based on actual market pricing.

He said the farmers income guarantee campaign operates differently from the harvest pricing guarantee campaign, ensuring that the campaign does not cause market interruption or contradict the World Trade Organizaton’s regulations.

The authorities will be making further reviews of the guaranteed pricing of rubber, tapioca, and maize, pending approval from a triad of committees from the government, private sector, and farmers.

I hope they organise and audit the payments better than they did with the payments for the disabled and disadvantage.

You can bet that scheming little civil service minds would be working overtime as to how they can get their hands on some of it.
