Conflict over new chief of Excise Department prompts Finance Minister’s resignation

Thailand’s Finance Minister Pridi Daochai did not resign because of health problems, as he claimed in his letter of resignation, but because of a conflict with his deputy, Santi Prompat, over the person chosen to head the Excise Department.

Informed government sources said that the disagreement broke into open conflict during the mobile cabinet meeting in the eastern province of Rayong on August 25th, when the issue of the appointment was discussed.

According to the list submitted to the Cabinet by Mr. Pridi, the then Director of the Fiscal Policy Office, Mr. Lawan Saengsanit, was nominated for the post. At the meeting, however, the name of Mr. Praphas Kong-aid, current Director of the Office of the State Enterprise Commission, was proposed instead. This prompted an objection from Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngarm, who pointed out that this was not in order, because Mr. Praphas’s name was not the one on the list submitted by the Finance Minister.

What an absolute s*** show. The power at the top (not the absolute very top) is obviously far too concentrated - thing is, surely people taking these positions must know that. They're employed to take the title but not really the position.

How can so few people be qualified to make so many decisions? They simply can't and this will just get worse and worse really quickly.

from the linked article:

Mr. Praphas’s name was proposed to Deputy Finance Minister Santi by a large corporation and was forwarded to Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan for submission to the Cabinet

So, the "large corporation" wants their puppet to head the excise department..., just wondering if any of the "accompanying accouterments" were returned or kept for future "considerations"...

So it was'nt the somtam in the canteen! I have lost face big time! ????

No, don't be silly.

If it were the somtam in the canteen, then the excuse would be: "Leaving to spend more time practising getting it through the eye of a needle at thirty paces!"

And anyway, eating canteen somtam in a job which requires wearing a white dress uniform is a very high risk strategy, Mr Pridi was formerly a banker - they are very risk averse!

The brazen contempt shown towards taxpaying citizens is astonishing even by the standards of Thai politics.

My wife took this photo at the Ratchadamnoen demonstration a couple of weeks ago. The message is subtle but it shows that even those kids know exactly what is going on.
