BANGKOK (NNT) - To address a wave of fake news and misinformation about the current COVID-19 situation, the government is taking proactive steps to provide accurate news and information to foreigners and migrant workers in Thailand. One of the measures is sending text messages to their mobile phones.

The move is a cooperative arrangement between the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES), the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and five major mobile telecommunication operators, namely Total Access Communication (DTAC), Advanced Info Service (AIS), True, TOT and CAT Telecom.

They are now ready to send Short Message Service (SMS) messages about the COVID-19 situation to foreigners and migrant workers living in Thailand. The messages are in English, and the Myanmar and Cambodian languages.

Telecom operators started sending the first batch of messages this afternoon. The messages provide information about ways to protect people from spreading or contracting COVID-19, including washing their hands regularly, wearing face masks and observing their condition.

They can reach the Department of Disease Control’s hotline at 1422. There are 2.8 million numbers registered with the five telecom operators by foreigners and migrant workers.

The Mor Chana mobile application has also been upgraded to provide better service to users. The CCSA meeting will consider urging the public to use this app together with the Thai Chana app, to monitor the latest COVID-19 outbreak.
