The Philippines is suffering through the worst lock-down in the world -- and it is doing nothing for the rising numbers.

Conversely Florida in the U.S dropped all restrictions and the cases are going  down and their economy is returning to normal.

It's doing nothing for the rising numbers because too many are ignoring the lockdown, not wearing masks and not social distancing.

Lock downs are just one part of a strategy to deal with the virus.  Sadly, if people don't follow the rules, they don't work.

It has been proven in NZ and Aus that you need to test thousands of persons, restrict insterstate/province travel , limit crowds etc.etc.

In Thailand

We now see cases spreding from entertainment venues in BK etc to other provinces. This will start a new wave in many areas. Efficient contact tracing is a must. I think Thailand should restrict travel during Songran and make a special effort to roll out vaccines to the general population. If they dont get their act together now we will not be able to ramp up business and some tourisim.

And yet in OZ, a huge outbreak occurred because guards at a quarantine facility didn't follow guidelines.  Melbourne was shut down for a long time due to this.

Thailand does contact tracking, and does a pretty good job at it.

If this is as bad as they say, Songkran should be postponed.  Like last year.

A third of Covid-19 survivors suffer 'brain disease,' study shows

They found 34% of Covid-19 survivors received a diagnosis for a neurological or psychological condition within six months of their infection, according to the study published Tuesday in the journal Lancet Psychiatry.

The most common diagnosis was anxiety, found in 17% of those treated for Covid-19, followed by mood disorders, found in 14% of patients.

Hey Thailand you are not alone. Canada is having a big spike of the virus, so I guess we are also in the 3rd or what ever wave.

No dining inside restaurants, will be allowed, Gyms and exercise places are being shut down, spas, hair dressers and barbers etc.  are being shut down.

As well as many other places.  No big social gatherings will be allowed as well. Hopefully that means no protests for a while.

and people are tired of the virus after one year. 2021 will be the year of getting vaccinated against the virus, and 2022 may be

the year that some of the world will start to recover.  Just wait until the 4th or 5th waves  are over, before getting optimistic about this

pandemic slowing down.  Patience is a very important virtue, that so many people just do not seem to have.

Geezer

Sorry, I don't follow you on that - how is it possible to know that 91% are negative if they are not tested?

When a big enough sample is tested, it gives an indication as to the greater population within that area. However, with Covid, 9% can very quickly become 18%, 36% .........................

Exactly..if you don't have nationwide testing on a daily basis accessible to everyone you can only hazard a guess, hence an educated calculated guess still isn't an accurate indicator.Take Papua New Guinea for example..Australian medical aid doctors were shocked to find 1 in 2 locals tested were positive to covid!

Ummm....they are dying because of covid.  Sure, they have underlying issues, but CV19 is the trigger.

What's the bigger killer out there?  Stunning anyone would say 3-5MM deaths during the worst pandemic in a century is small potatoes.  Heartless.

Hunger kills 9 million a year. Cancer kills 10 million. As I said....covid is small potatoes.

I don't know, are you? Have you published this research in any scientific journals for peer review?

The point?

Cancer research and treatments are always ongoing, billions of dollars spent combating it.

Hunger is devastating and the world should do more as a unified collective, have you sent any money to one of the many charities?

How many a year would you think would be dead if there were no measures throughout the world on covid? Maybe not such small potatoes?

Proactive possibly, but unrealistic.  Once the hoards start arriving for Songkran it will be impossible to test them all.

Why?

Friend of mine returned from UK to HK last year and had to have a test before leaving the airport, took 10 hours.

Bangkokians don't seem scared.  There is no checking in and out of locations and no distancing.  They are wearing masks.  It's possible that people who had some physical contact with the various entertainment centers could become spreaders.  If so, they will be hard to trace.  The danger is with those who don't know they are infected and with people who must keep working even if they don't feel well.

We have all seen the Thais wearing masks with their nose exposed and no social distancing . If covid gets a hold in Thailand it will spread like wildfire and be devastating . The majority of Thai folk rely on basic government hospitals which are not geared up for a catastrophe .

How familiar are you with the Philippines living conditions?

Barangay officials are fining 3000php and more for not wearing a mask; and taking some to city jails.  In resettlement camps (there are A BUNCH OF THEM) ... 10-20 people live per 400 sf attached "house".  Social Distancing??

If you can get through the checkpoints, the designated buyer of the household will be denied entry to the grocery store if your temp is up (it is HOT AS HELL in Philippines right now); or if you are under 20 or over 60 - or any other reason chosen at random.

Anyone with a job must have a COMPANY ID or will be refused entry at the checkpoints.  Only problem is many companies have shut down so fewer people need to go to work.  And fewer people have money for food.

I have very close friends who haven't ventured more than 50 feet from their house in a YEAR.  One person from the household does grocery and supply buying as needed.

We aren't talking about a "new" lockdown.  We are talking about the lockdown that started March or April of 2020!
https://time.com/5945616/covid-philippines-pandemic-lockdown/

It is not as clear cut as you think it is.  And now, an estimated 50% won't take the vaccine if offered.  Which is probably good since the government only bought enough vaccinations for 1% of its population.

PS:  Not only masks are required in public -- but FACE SHIELDS also.

Please don't blame the Filipinos ... They have been dealt a harsh card.

The waves seem to spike when testing spikes.

Less testing=Less positives.

More testing=More positives.

COVID is everywhere.

Many people are positive, don't know it, show no symptoms, or rode it out like the annual flu.

That's a fake narrative.  Testing=cases.  Don't fall for it.  And don't compare CV19 to the flu.

Here, they are testing sewage in Bangkok to find cases.  When it's detected, they start testing in that area.  So yes, more tests = more cases.  But that's because there ARE more cases. It's got nothing to do with testing.  Just trying to control this beast.

Since Thailand routinely from the beginning performs 500 to 1000 tests for each single positive case, you are wrong.

When the 1st, 2nd, and now 3rd waves start, they see more cases. When they see more cases they increase the number of tests, as recommend internationally. So:

More positives=More testing

Less positives=Less testing

(You have to love equal signs)

Checked with the little missus. She is a Thai news addict.

She has never heard or read such a claim. Can you cite the source?

I'll try to find it.  I read it in a news report here a few months ago.  Initially told about this from a nurse who works in Bangkok.  Honestly, I was skeptical.  But.  Guess it's a widely used process.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7384408/

This is really scary.  They're doing it in NY and finding crazy mutations.  Insane. And scary.

Article

From what my friend said, who's a nurse, but markets supplies to hospitals in Bangkok, they've been doing this for some time.  When the virus is found, they go into that community and test.  It's not mass testing, like some would like, but it's not bad.

Thanks!!

Totally fake news, and meant as a deception from the truth. Never reveal the truth here! Don't buy into the nonsensical narrative. This is NOT a 3rd wave. The 2nd wave never ended. This is a huge bump of the 2nd, "Pratin" (Prayuth and Anutin) created Samut wave.

Never forgive! Never forget Samut!
