The inauguration of a professorial chair in memory of the late Cardinal Cornelius Sim of Brunei has been announced by a Christian organisation that promotes theological dialogues and ecumenical conversation.

According to a press release issued Sept. 5, the Cornelius Cardinal Sim Professorial Chair in Theology and Dialogue has been established by the Christian Institute for Theological Engagement (CHRISTE).

According to the statement, the chair will be sponsored by an endowment from a community of benefactors as a monument to the late cardinal.

“On the 100th anniversary of His Eminence's death, we are pleased to announce that a community of benefactors has endowed CHRISTE with a professorial chair in honour of the late Cardinal Sim's life and ministry to the People of God.
According to Jocelyn Yeo, chairperson of CHRISTE's board of governors, "this professorial position bears the name of Cardinal Sim and comes with a mandate to engage in continuing theological inquiry and discussion through research, teaching, and publication."

The funds will be utilised for research and publication activities on topics of theology and discourse that are important to Cardinal Sim's heart, according to Yeo, furthering the research institute's vocation.

“The Cornelius Cardinal Sim Professorial Chair in Theology and Dialogue reflects both the benefactors' and our research institute's intention to authentically conserve and continue the legacy that the late cardinal left behind in his apostolic vocation to the Church and the world,” Yeo added.

The Cornelius Cardinal Sim professor of theology and dialogue has been appointed to Deacon Sherman Kuek, a distinguished research fellow in Catholic and ecumenical thinking at CHRISTE.

The professor will accept, analyse, and approve research ideas from scholars who would be possible winners of yearly grants supported by this endowment with the help of a panel of consultors.

“Throughout His Eminence's episcopal career, he was concerned that Christians be well-equipped to respond honestly to the societal circumstances of their time.
As a result, when CHRISTE was founded on August 28, 2020, under a United Nations treaty that brings it within the legal jurisdiction of international law, His Eminence became the institute's first ecclesiastical patron,” Sherman stated.
