Apart from approaching Malaysia for a trilateral partnership (Aukus) involving Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, Senior Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein (pix) has asked Australia to contact Brunei, the current Asean chair.

Hishammuddin said it was necessary for Australia to reach out to CLMV countries (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam) as well as countries adjacent to China to seek their perspectives after a phone chat with his Australian colleague Peter Dutton two days ago.

Furthermore, it would appear that Aukus is not something to be concerned about, despite the fact that it may have an impact on the Asean region's defence posture.

“Our strength is not when we are alone; it is when these ten Asean member countries band together to defend the region's status and security.

When the debate on the motion of thanks for the royal address in the Dewan Rakyat today came to a close, he said, “I also plan to make a brief visit to China soon, and one thing we need to get is the views of the Chinese government, especially on defence and, of course, on Aukus, and the follow-up action from what has been announced.”

Malaysia is concerned that the security alliance may lead to a nuclear arms race in the Indo-Pacific.

In a statement released on September 18, the Prime Minister's Office expressed concern that the move may prompt other states to behave forcefully in the region, particularly in the South China Sea.

If a diplomatic strategy to reaching out to the major nations is not adopted, any undesired element might trigger a crisis that could impact the area, according to Hishammuddin.
