Go-go Bars gone???

Fat chance!   The supply is ready and waiting.  The demand will increase when the Covid situation is "under control".

The Pandemic has been a speed bump for the Industry...  that's all.

Of course there is reason to be pessimistic as we've never experienced anything like this before..  there are thousands of girls laying dormant up-country sitting on their money-boxes waiting for things to open up. Once their girlfriend's head to the big smoke and give the all clear, the rest will follow!

Crikey!  We've heard stories of doom and gloom for the Bar industry for years.

The Patpong Markets were supposed to have been the demise of PP1 & 2 however new concepts and reburbishments kept the bar area going!

Stickman's glass was always 'half empty'..  Soi Cowboy was supposed to get swallowed up by shopping malls and restaurants 10 years ago according to Stick.

When all the girls come back,  the Arab will turn his lights on again!

Happy days to come!

International travel will never recover. The west will be wrecked by the spending that already took place and people will find their savings and fixed incomes inflated away.

Agree. Inflation hasn't really got started yet, but when it does it'll be very unpleasant for a lot of people that bought houses and cars etc on very cheap finance.

However, for those of us that have savings and no debt, higher interest on savings will be great.

So the airlines will go bust and flights will be something only rich people manage.

IMO it'll be like before 747s and cheap flights, but even I could afford to fly then, though not like before corona.

No, it will be business as usual as soon as things are open.

There is a huge misconception (I guess mostly by people who don't make it further than places as Pattaya), that go-go bars are only there for tourist. Bars with female services are found all over Thailand and used by many Thai men. It has been in the Thai culture long before the Americans landed in Pattaya in the 60s. They won't disappear because of Prayut. I wouldn't be surprised if the army is one of the biggest contributors in this sector.

For the tourist places, they will follow the money. Whatever the tourist are looking for, will be offered.

Agreed

They want to have the sex stories during state( and Business) visits to cease being told. My guess is top brass and rich people visit Washington/London/Berlin and have falang <deleted> that can't wait to tell about their experiences in the Red Light Districts. I'd think those encounters would get old quick and lead to a loss of face. The rich and powerful are tired of those escapades being told time and again during their visits to the  West.

I'll have to respectfully disagree with you. From my decade of experience with Thais, especially Thai women, I have found that money is their primary goal in life and there is little shame in the culture to care where it came from. I wouldn't be too worried about the feeling of the wealthy overseas. Any evidence?

Yeah.  The governments (worldwide) are using this so-called "emergency: to leverage agendas that otherwise would never be allowed to fly.

Here in Thailand the government has been hell-bent to implement a Neo-prohibition as well as enforcing a new morality on the unwashed masses.
At the end of the day it's about showing the serfs who is in control.

However, in the process they'll destroy their economy, especially the economies that supported the more economically vulnerable.
The high-and-mighty only care for themselves.  They want high-end revenue streams only - which - only benefit the wealthy and the governmental tools of the Thai ubermenchen.
The lower and middle class are being tossed under the bus with willful impunity.

So yeah - Go-Gos and the like are a thing of the past as well as the foreign tourism population that frequented Go-Gos and the bar-girl scene.  Go-Go, the bar-scene, as well as your average farang tourist will be discouraged.  Destroy the bar-scene and many foreigners will go elsewhere.  You can find the same scenes in places like the PI or Mexico.

Whether the Karaoke and shower-massage scene survives will be dependent on the Thai male population.  Too many well-to-do Thai men frequent the Karaoke and Ap-Op-Nuat scenes so that may actually make a come-back (no pun intended).  But that scene culturally caters to Thais and not farang.  I don't think the high-and-mighty moralists in Bangkok are doing to destroy Thai cultural icons.  It really depends on the social status of those who complain the loudest about these government imposed restrictions.

GO GO bars in Thailand are like strip clubs in North America.  They will survive and flourish but probably not in the numbers they presently are.  They over flooded the market.  Now the herd is being culled and the strong will survive.

What area's can "families and quality tourists" (?) not stay.

Quality tourists is such an amusing and ignorant term. I suppose it is supposed to mean people with money. However, for nearly a decade the ability of Thailand to attract people with real money has been declining for a dozen good reasons, cited numerous times. And that trend will certainly continue, with the braindead leadership here, the stunning lack of creativity, the fear mongering, the continued toxic xenophobia coming from the immigration and the other creeps, the higher prices, the inability of circus clowns like Phiphat, and the others, to learn anything from the past, use Covid as a window to fix things, and progress forward like many other nations of the world.

In 2019, 86% of arrivals were from Malaysia, India and China. 86%. And it is likely most were lower income, or at most lower middle income. They were not spending much, as so many in the industry were saying. So, the wish for well heeled tourism is just a pipe dream, by the ignorant fools, who are not willing to make any sacrifices, to attract those kinds of tourists.

Families can stay anywhere. No worry about where the quality tourists can stay, as only a few thousand of them come to Thailand anyway, in a given year. That is, if you use the mindless term in the way the ignorant leaders do.

The only danger to him I can see is if he can't bring the economy back strong.

[ ... ]

I guess what I'm saying is at the present time I don't see a future for go-gos and their outreach to help uneducated girls get some bucks to help their families. I like go-gos too and would miss them. : )

If looked at GNP go-go then bar-income doesn't fill much, if that turnover matters at all.

If the total tourism industry is up to 20 percent of GNP, then at least 80 percent is something else - and this something else was 90 percent about a decade ago - so financially how much value create go-go bars, and folks coming to Thailand, or staying here, because of the option, in percentage of the total value of tourism industry; and has that turnover increased linear when tourism increased from about 10 percent of GNP to almost 20 percent?

Value of GNP-support is the important matter for the government and their aim for more so-called quality tourists, which to my understanding are better off couples and families, spending a lot of money.

To scale the value of red light-industry, we need to know how many of the nearly 40 million arrivals before the Covid-pandemic that came here because of the nightlife - and especially the go-go bar option - and which countries did they come from, and how long time in average they stayed in the kingdom, i.e. hos much money, did the spend?

There are probably no crystal clear statistics, only assumption and speculation as answer, apart from there might be some statistic indication if families with children are in the rise, and also if the number of female tourists had increased. Both those number could show if the increased number of tourists is due to couples and families, rather than single gentlemen; i.e. I'm presuming that single gentlemen are more likely to use the go-go bar option than coming entirely to enjoy dining in the increasing number of Michelin-star gourmet restaurants, but I might of course be mistaken....:whistling:

I think at least some go-go bars will survive, but the number might be decreasing in certain areas where the authorities will try to change the tourists destination's attractions to become a family resort. However, if that fails it might over time slowly revert to the old well proven and well working business plan...🤔

I can imagine that post covid amazing Thailand might become different, and also the nightlife, at least for a beginning, while in some areas the nightlife might end as almost business as usual - that might be areas that also before the lockdown had a smaller number number of gogo bars and typical lady-bars, but rather a more party stile nightlife with freelancers - perhaps clubs and parties are more a the definition of the future, with less visual flesh market...🙂

As, I'm still trying to figure out what Pattaya has in mind to draw families. Thai families prefer good beaches. What would draw foreign families has yet to be thought of.

What I would be looking for is high end resort hotels with excellent service, great selection of restaurants and a good pool (or pools).

Not interested in leaving the resort.

I'm not sure if Pattaya has any resort hotels like that.

Well, yes, obviously, you don't have to pay prostitutes a divorce settlement once you have finished having sex with them

Most men could "cavorte" with prostitutes in their own country. Do they inform family and friends about it?

On my observations it is game over now for go go bars . If you asked will they start up again then i could more understand your question .

In my opinion the go go bars will not open again due to the present government's wishes for a higher quality tourist .

Given it's unlikely Thailand will attract "higher quality" ( read rich ) tourists, do you think they'll resort to the tried and true methods of extracting farangs from their money?
