Thailand on Tuesday (November 30) reported 4,306 new COVID-19 cases, 6,407 recoveries and 37 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

▶︎ Infections outside prisons: 4,183. Prisons: 123

▶︎ Recoveries: 6,407

▶︎ Total infections since April 1: 2,087,009

▶︎ Total recoveries since since April 1: 1,992,002

Tuesday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,115,872 with 20,771 deaths.

The news comes as public health authorities have now confirmed that the RT-PCR method is capable of detecting the new variant and the method is still in use globally.

Department of Medical sciences Director-General Supakit Sirilak said his department has been constantly checking the genomes of the coronavirus and feeding reports into the GISAID global database that provides access to genomic data of influenza viruses. With the appearance of the Omicron variant of the virus that causes COVID-19, which is considered a variant of concern by the World Health Organization, the department has yet to discover the variant among 8 recently collected samples or from the 75 other samples collected since Thailand’s reopening to international visitors on November 1. All of the said samples were of the Delta variant and subvariants.

Dr. Supakit asserted that if Omicron variants make their way into the country, his department will quickly discover them as the variant identification process at 15 medical science centers nationwide is now being adjusted to focus on the Omicron variant.

I was talking to my sister in Italy and she is worried as covid cases are rising fast, same in Greece where my brother is, and as I hear in other European countries. And all of these countries  have a significantly higher rate of vaccinations with a better quality of vaccines.

So why are cases on the decline here in Thailand with a lower rate of vaccinating and on the rise in Europe? Is it under reporting in Thailand ? is it that we are behind the curve and it is coming here also. Is it that it was here already and we got through it?

Or is it something else?

Something else is probably an absolutely dismal number of tests. Under reporting? Maybe this is a factor with home ATK tests.

Not sure if it under reporting by the goverment as a mater of policy, though I would not be surprised if it was. I think that many poorer Thais are apprehensive about being tested when they don't feel well, so the soldier  through it, and recover,  thus the infection  goes under reported.

Says it all about reactivity. There's nothing to worry about because as of yet we don't know the details. Proactive is worry UNTIL you know the details.

Regardless of the Thai government saying that there is no use of panicking, nothing is stopping you from panicking if that's what you want.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/29/us/politics/biden-omicron-variant-travel-ban.html

But several public health experts expressed outrage at the bans, saying they punished South Africa for doing what the United States expected of other nations: tracking the coronavirus, identifying worrisome variants and making the information public.

“Travel restrictions are exactly the wrong incentive to give to countries when you want them to share data,” said Gregg Gonsalves, an activist and associate professor of epidemiology at Yale University. “You want them to be on the lookout for new variants, and you shut your borders?”

25 cases in Cambodia Absaloutly amazing ,maybe they  have  the right idea, no symptoms no test ,it seems to work.

We can learn something from Cambodia success which even outpaced wealthier neighbouring South East countries in their vaccination drive. They mandate vaccines, hard on misinformation, low level of vaccine hesitancy and quick to receive the 27 million doses out of the 30 million required from China.

Indeed, proactive is prepare for the worst and hope for the best. This is what all good scientists do especially when faced with an unknown foe as Omicron currently is. Its reflective of how we all should prepare.

Health Ministry Prepares Serious Defense against Omicron

BANGKOK, Nov 30 (TNA) – Deputy Public Health Minister Sathit Pitutecha said the Public Health Ministry seriously prepared itself to cope with the newly found Omicron variant of COVID-19 and visitors would continue to be tested for the disease with the RT-PCR technique.

Mr. Sathit said that the emergency operation center of the Public Health Ministry this morning discussed responses to the Omicron variant. Deputy Prime Minister and Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul attended the meeting online from abroad and ordered serious responses including intensified screening procedures on visitors. The authorities are considering suspending the decision to replace RT-PCR tests with antigen tests for air travellers following the emergence of the Covid 19 variant Omicron.

Nice to see that they have prepared for the boosters for those of us who received the AZ vaccine.  I will hit my 6th month just after I return to Thailand from my trip abroad to the US.  I am also prepared for the worst of doing 2 weeks in an AQ somewhere, but hopefully it can be done in the Sandbox.
