According to recent local media sources, Brunei has withdrew from hosting the 34th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in 2027, as declared by the ministry of culture, youth, and sports.

The minister, on the other hand, remained tight-lipped about the decision's motivations.

Sports Minister Dato Aminuddin Ihsan Abidin said Brunei's plan to host in 2027 was just provisional, needing confirmation by the government, during the daily Covid-19 news briefing.

Aminuddin clarified a viral social media post, saying it was not an official announcement and featured "false and unsubstantiated allegations."

Brunei was mentioned as a potential host country for the 2027 Games in July of last year, but it announced its withdrawal from the competition on December 7 during a meeting of the South-East Asian Games Federation Council.

Brunei chose to withdraw from the provisional deal after a thorough review, according to the ministry.
"During the meeting, the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council issued a statement."

Indonesia, on the other hand, has stated that it is willing to host the SEA Games in 2027.

The sultanate also declined to host the 2019 Games due to financial and logistical constraints.
The Philippines was chosen to host the event in the end.
Brunei hosted the biennial games for the last time in 1999.

The decision, according to Aminuddin, will not halt current repairs and renovations at local sporting facilities.

"The SEA Games are not the only reason for repairs, restorations, and any planned upgrades.
It's also being done for the long-term benefit of our community and athletes.
So whether we host or not, this will continue."

The Menglait Complex and Hassanal Bolkiah Indoor Stadium are two of the venues being refurbished, with completion expected in October 2022.
