ICE vs EV, the debate thread

Featured Replies

AI Overview

In July 2025, the UK government launched a new Electric Car Grant (ECG) that bases subsidies on a vehicle's overall carbon footprint, not just its tailpipe emissions

. This incentive provides a discount of either £1,500 or £3,750 on new electric vehicles (EVs) that cost £37,000 or less and meet specific manufacturing sustainability criteria.

How the carbon-based subsidy works

The new grant is tied to the embodied carbon emissions generated during a vehicle's production, which is a departure from previous schemes focused only on tailpipe emissions.

Weighting: The carbon footprint assessment places 70% of its weight on the battery cell production site and 30% on the final vehicle assembly site.

Electricity source: The environmental score is based on the carbon intensity of the electricity grids in the countries where the vehicle and its battery are made.

Grid comparison: Vehicles assembled in countries with electricity grids heavily reliant on fossil fuels, like China, receive a higher (worse) carbon score. Cars manufactured in regions with low-carbon electricity, such as from renewables or nuclear power in the UK, France, and Spain, receive a lower (better) score

It would appear that the UK Goverment is adopting Akio Toyoda approach of looking at the embodied carbon emissions generated during a vehicle's production, which is a departure from previous schemes focused only on tailpipe emissions.

  • Better off with a Hybrid in Thailand for now. Cant see the infrastructure here for another 10 years to support EVs.

Akio Toyoda Says EVs Are Dirtier Than You Think

Toy

Chairman Akio Toyoda emphasizes that carbon neutrality remains Toyota’s top priority.

He claims 27 million Toyota hybrids match the carbon impact of 9 million electric cars.

Toyoda argues EVs raise emissions when powered by fossil-fueled electricity, especially in Japan.

Toyoda defends Toyota’s multi-energy strategy and warns against an EV-only future approach

Toyoda also pointed to Toyota’s history with hybrid vehicles. “We have sold some 27 million hybrids,” he said. “Those hybrids have had the same impact as 9 million BEVs on the road. But if we were to have made 9 million BEVs in Japan, it would have actually increased the carbon emissions, not reduced them. That is because Japan relies on the thermal power plants for electricity.”

Akio Toyoda has been called out on that claim by the experts.

He’s not considering the whole life case where EV’s are only 20-30% of an ICE car.

AI Overview

An electric vehicle's (EV) lifecycle carbon footprint can be 20–30% of an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) car's under specific conditions

, though the savings are typically higher in most scenarios. The primary factor determining these emissions is the carbon intensity of the electricity used for charging, along with the battery size and the vehicle's manufacturing emissions.

The best-case scenario

The "20–30% of ICE" figure can be achieved when an EV is charged using a power grid dominated by renewable energy sources, and the vehicle is manufactured with a smaller, more efficient battery.

Key drivers for extremely low emissions

A green electricity grid: The largest factor in reducing an EV's carbon footprint is charging it with renewable energy. The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) shows that an EV's lifetime emissions are significantly lower when using a grid powered by renewable electricity. A Volkswagen study found that charging with renewable energy could reduce the vehicle's "use phase" CO₂ emissions from 62 g/km (on the EU grid mix) to just 2 g/km.

This is a trend on this forum that is very annoying: people posting "AI Overviews". Just post sources, no one should trust an AI overview of anything, it's a horrible trend and is not reliable. Not picking on you specifically.

For example I wanted to know if there was any info on how the boxer Ricky Hatton died.

Then yesterday my daughter excitedly told me Wing Stop is coming to Thailand as she saw the store in MBK with big "Wing Stop coming soon" stickers all over it. So I asked when it was coming and got an "AI overview".

Its fair to say that AI is not always the place to get the latest info on all subjects but the chance of good results improves if you apply the query to more than one engine.

Not all AI data sets have up to date info about Wingstop expansion plans in Thailand but they might catch up at some point or possibly not at all.

I don't believe in the 'carbon footprint', and just a tax scam.   Of course better to charge with renewable energy, and why we have solar.

I just don't believe anything VW or Toyota states, as been caught lying through their teeth, and are simply 2 of the must untrustworthy auto makers out there ... IMHO

Here is some Chinese EV  carmakers caught out

Chery, the nation’s largest car exporter, was found to have applied for about 240 million yuan of funding for around 8,760 EVs and hybrids that did not qualify, while 143 million yuan for roughly 4,900 cars BYD sold were removed from the ledger, according to preliminary results published by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology late in June.

We have a leaking swimming pool at one of our customers houses, so I took a few measurements day by day then asked AI to analyse the numbers and tell me where the leak is.  It produced pages of formulas and 4 different methods of analysis and predicted the leak at 26.5 cm down from the top.

Here's some humour, I asked AI if using AI on forums is an annoying trend...

It’s definitely stirring debate. On forums like ASEAN NOW, some users are openly frustrated by the rise of “AI Overviews” in posts. One member recently called it a “horrible trend” and urged others to just post sources instead of relying on AI-generated summaries. The concern is that AI responses can feel impersonal, lack nuance, or misrepresent complex topics—especially when users are seeking firsthand experience or local insight.

🤖 Why It Feels Annoying to Some

  • Loss of authenticity: Forums thrive on personal anecdotes and lived experience. AI can dilute that.

  • Over-summarization: AI often condenses too much, skipping context or subtlety.

  • Trust issues: Some users don’t trust AI to get facts right, especially in sensitive or fast-changing topics.

  • Echo chamber effect: Repetitive AI answers can crowd out diverse viewpoints.

🧠 But There’s a Flip Side

  • Efficiency: AI can quickly summarize long threads or provide background info.

  • Accessibility: Newcomers benefit from clear, structured answers.

  • Fact-checking: AI can help verify claims or link to credible sources—when used responsibly.

It’s a bit like autocorrect: helpful when subtle, annoying when it takes over. If you're active on forums, the key is balance—using AI to enhance, not replace, human insight. Want help crafting a post that blends both? I can help you strike the right tone.

Paraphrased from elsewhere ... and why some of us enjoy our BEV ... savings  :coffee1:

Posted a few times, but hey, I'm bored ... our cost for our MG ZSs, and do consider, petrol was more expensive when we had the ICE ZS.

Cost per kilometer ...

... ZS ICE - ฿2.27

... ZS BEV - ฿0.578 ( IF we didn't have solar and used PEA to charge )

... ZS BEV - ฿1 when O&A using charging stations

What??!!.....what happened  to the anti-EV talking point of EV electricity demands will overload/crash the electric grid.  Well, if it happens it doesn't appear it will happen in Thailand any time soon per below 29 Oct 2025 Bangkok Post article....see weblink for full article.

Weak demand results in suspension of 4 power plants

Sluggish economic growth has prompted energy authorities to halt the operations of four power plants and delay the opening of a fifth to avoid a financial burden for electricity producers and buyers, says Energy Minister Auttapol Rerkpiboon.

The suspension is meant to prevent a glut of electricity in the country when power demand is weak during a period of decreased economic activity, he said.

The decision was made recently by the National Energy Policy Council (NEPC).

Proposed ICE/Hybrid/EV vehicle insurance payouts due to flooding in southern Thailand....see below Bangkok Post 28 Nov 2025 article/weblink for full story....partial quote from article also below.

To simplify the process and ensure victims receive compensation quickly, the OIC is preparing to issue an announcement requiring insurance companies to accept claims that use only photos of damaged cars or houses sent via designated channels such as Line, he said.

For cars damaged by the floods, the OIC set three categories: internal combustion engine cars, hybrid cars and electric vehicles (EVs).

Flood damage was separated into five levels. Level A covers water reaching the floor of the car, such as the carpet. The estimated repair cost is 8,000-10,000 baht.

Level B refers to water reaching the seats and electrical system. The estimated repair cost is 15,000-20,000 baht.

Level C is for water reaching the lower part of the front console, with the estimated repair cost 25,000-30,000 baht.

Level D covers water reaching the upper part of the front console. The estimated repair cost starts at 30,000 baht and can increase.

For Level E, the entire car was submerged. Insurers are instructed to pay out the entire insured value to the policyholder or beneficiary.

For hybrid cars, if water reaches the floor, an additional 100,000 baht will be paid, said Mr Chuchatr. For EVs, if water reaches the floor insurers must pay the entire insured value, as EV batteries positioned on the floor are extremely expensive, costing more than 500,000 baht, noted the OIC.

According to information as of Nov 26, roughly 3,000 cars have been reported damaged.

BYD has only been in Thailand for a few years and trending upward, but I don't know if they will have as much success in this year's motor expo due to all the other EV competition that has recently arrived Thailand like GAC, Geely, GWM, etc.

Car exports decline 12%

Market shifts to battery vehicles

PUBLISHED : 23 Dec 2025 at 06:58

Thailand's car exports dropped 12% year-on-year between January and November to 78,692 units, as internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles lost ground in overseas markets amid growing competition, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Surapong Paisitpatanapong, FTI vice-chairman and spokesman for the federation's Automotive Industry Club, said the decline stemmed from global automakers phasing out ICE models in favour of battery electric vehicles (BEVs), new carbon emission taxes on oil-fuelled cars in some countries, and the economic slowdown among Thailand's trade partners.

He noted China's surge in BEV exports has outpaced Thailand's, which still relies heavily on ICE shipments.

He attributed the growth to more affordable BEV prices, lower lending rates following the Bank of Thailand's policy rate cut, and strong promotions during the 12-day Thailand International Motor Expo, which ended Dec 10.

BEV sales are expected to hit 120,000 units this year, surpassing the 100,000-unit target, helped by demand from the Motor Expo.
