Fixed broadband speeds in Thailand among the fastest in the world

Broadband speeds in Thailand are some of the fastest in the world, according to a new global index based on the median download speeds of internet users around the world.

 

The Speedtest Global Index by internet analytics firm Ookla found that Thailand has the third fastest median download speeds for fixed broadband, behind Singapore and Chile.

The index studied data gathered from Ookla’s Speedtest tool in October, November and December last year.

 

During those three months, internet users in Thailand recorded median download speeds of 176Mbps, 171Mbps and 173Mbps.

I am kinda finding this hard to believe if I compare my erratic True connection (throttling city) to what I have experienced on my travels. Korea was by far the fastest I have witnessed and simply slayed most others in my experience.

In Thailand ,yes  connecting to websites overseas .....less so,

but I am still happy with the prices of broadband and unlimited

access ,much better than a whole lot of Countries.

If you don't already have VPN to access the overseas websites, take a look at Surfshark.  Cost is $2 per month for basic VPN connection if you sign up for two years.  I've been using this VPN for a few years without issue.

In the past I have tried Surfshark ,but did not like it , would not work

for BBC iPlayer,for years I have used Browsec as it's so easy to use

and same price as others.  VPN's cut your speeds ,also Adblockers,

Adguard cuts my speeds by 50 %. Ublock origin does not.

Phuket 1 gig 3BB fiber connection - makes my Australian NBN connection look third world.
4G/5G mobile is generally great as well.

Thailand for remote work, if you're reliant on these things, is awesome.

Well I have True and I sent a screen copy of my speedtest to a pal using Talk Talk in UK and he was highly impressed...... I also hear a lot of complaints from Australians about their internet.....just did 920/220 Mb/s. Korea is exceptional.

If someone asked me what impressed me the most about Thailand (apart for Nana Plaza obviously) I would say without hesitation........ broadband.

 

I half assumed being in the back of beyond we would struggle to a) get braodband and if we did it would be b) snail mail.

 

Signed a contract on a Monday, all done and dusted by Wednesday.......hardly had a problem in two years.

I also have had a less than positive experience with Surfshark, despite their appealing low price.

 

1. SS doesn't unlock a lot of the different major streaming services (you'll get an error message saying the service has recognized you're using a VPN or a proxy).

 

And 2 (and this is probably a more narrow issue for me):  I run a full time VPN off of my wifi router. But sometimes, I'll want to use a different city connection for a particular device, and thus try to use SS and its app on top of my router's VPN connection. And SS has an annoying system practice of then locking me out of using their service, and I have to contact their customer service to release  the lock.

 

For those reasons, I won't be extending my current sub with them when it expires.

I use AIS Fibre and have had no issues with it - been down a couple of times, but got messages from them saying they were fixing it. And one time they sent a technician out that day to sort it.  

Speeds are always good, can stream etc. with no issues

I think this is one area, relatively uncommon for monopoly inclined Thailand, where real competition in the marketplace has been a huge plus.

 

When I first came to Thailand many years back, I had a True cable internet connection that was very slow and problematic, even in the heart of Bangkok.

 

But then somehow 3BB managed to get their fiber network up and running, and AIS ended up doing the same.  And both left #$%^%$ True (owned by billionaire and CP empire owner Chearavanont) and their internet service way behind in the dust.

Yes....we went with 3BB......during lockdown, in Bangkok, we were getting 400 Mbps.....650 baht a month.....well impressed.

I think it may be highly dependent on your location. When I am in the UK my internet is very good. What surprises me that one would thinks its better in a big city but I live in the middle of Sukhumvit in Bangkok and mine is very unreliable. They can't even offer fibre in my building. Pattaya is obviously v good by your experience.

It's long that I looked at sea cables.

The development is tremendous.

But Thailand is surely much depending on connection to Singapore/Malaysia.

Only four landing points in Thailand. Compare with Singapore.

I am not sure about the fastest speeds in the world but I am getting speeds of over 970 Mbps on a Fiber line with 3BB. This is much faster than in my socialist Western home country.

Placing your privately operated VPN node in Singapore is always a good choice, maximum speeds due to the speed between here and Singapore.....

Makes you wish they were doing something with all this speed.

 

We amazingly get great speeds out here in the most country bumpkin village you can think of, amidst tractors, cows, chickens, both fiber and cell phone. Micro cell towers stand next to run down shacks. I'm certainly thankful for it as it allows me to do my online teaching for extra cash, to intl students who actually want to learn. The locals certainly don't. Hah.

 

And therein lies the prob. All this amazing speed, and I just see kids lying around playing games, scrolling through Facebook, watching TikTok. I'm doing my final scores now, and about half the sheets are blank.

Very true. In the US, it is slower and costs alot more than here. 

 

The real contrast is with 4G. Here, I get 30-80mbps speeds throughout Thailand with True. For 700 baht a month. In the US, Verizon charges over $100 a month with taxes, and the speeds have dropped over the past few years, due to massive over subscription of the network, and a lack of investment. On my last trip I was struggling to get 6mbps, and was often timing out, despite using the network in various areas, during my travels. Truly a pathetic effort. I felt like I was in Sub Sahara Africa. And on top of that, customer service wait times were 45-82 minutes. Here I get through to customer service in 2 minutes. 

 

Despite hyper inflation, and dramatically rising costs, service and the quality of life is slipping badly back there.

Figures include both fixed broadband and mobile connections. 

 

My guess is that these sorts of figures are weighted heavily, 90+%, on LOCAL access.

 

Slipped to fourth place in January (fixed), 56th place in mobile.

Dunno Surfshark, but Nord gives very high quality for 3 to 4 USD a month, that if you opt for a longer subscription. Nord and Express VPN consistently have the highest rankings, while Express will cost you twice as much as Nord. I find Nord annoying with their relentless software updates and requests for password changes, ironically I chose them after using a long list of pirated accounts. They should not push the burden of security onto their customers.

Nord and Surfshark are actually the same parent company. Express is owned by a shady conglomerate. The world of VPNs in murky indeed.

The only VPN I use nowadays is Proton VPN, from a technical level because they support wireguard protocol and can block ads and malware at a server level. More importantly, because of their beliefs and mission in supporting freedom of speach and privacy advocacy.

I dumped Nord a while back, not just for that, but the annoying log in security. I also moved from NordPass to Bitwarden for password management. Never looked back.
