Thailand records highest daily COVID-19 deaths since January

Thailand on Saturday (April 16) reported 18,892 new COVID-19 cases, 22,220 recoveries and 125 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. 

 

Saturday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 4,012,184 with 26,754 deaths.

 

The report comes as people are being asked to fully comply with Covid-19 control measures outlined by the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), including a ban on water-splashing activities, to prevent infection cases from increasing after the Songkran holidays.

 

Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana stated that the government and the CCSA encourage full cooperation from local communities and tourists to follow regulations rather than spoiling the festive spirit by directly enforcing the ban. He added that water splashing, powder smearing, and mass gatherings in public places during the holidays allow Covid-19 to spread easily and would later create a major burden for healthcare facilities in the country.**

Thailand set another year-high record of new COVID deaths for the third consecutive day with 125 on Saturday, the country’s seventh straight day with more than 100 deaths, while also reporting 2,062 COVID patients hospitalized in serious condition, the second highest tally of the year.

 

The 125 new COVID deaths blew past the prior year high totals of 119 reported yesterday and 115 on Thursday. The 2,062 COVID patients hospitalized in serious condition became the country’s second highest tally of the year exceeded only by a 2,065 count of such cases reported last Monday.

 

The bad news on new COVID deaths and serious hospitalizations came despite Thailand reporting more declines in officially reported new COVID cases to 18,892 and total active COVID cases under care to 221,452, both numbers declining steadily during the past week amid a general slowdown during the Songkran New Year's holidays. And both official numbers are widely considered vast undercounts with many cases going unreported.

 

With Saturday's update, new daily COVID deaths in Thailand have risen for the past four consecutive days, and new serious COVID hospitalizations have risen for the past three consecutive days despite the New Year's holidays, both considered better indicators of the direction of the country's COVID pandemic.

 

Among the serious condition hospitalized COVID cases, the share in the worst condition, those requiring intubation to breathe, declined slightly to 867, but that still is the third highest daily total of the year, and the decline from 872 the day before mostly because of all the new deaths.

 

Overall, Saturday's update pushed Thailand's official COVID death toll for 2022 past the 5,000 mark for the first time to 5,056. And it pushed Thailand's total tally of official cases since the start of the pandemic past the 4 million mark for the first time, hitting 4,012,184, which would represent more than 5 percent of the country's population if it were accurate.

 

For added context, during the peak of the Delta wave last fall, Thailand's daily COVID case count topped out at 23,418, but the numbers of serious hospital cases and the intubated share of those peaked above 5,600 and 1,100 respectively, and daily deaths topped 300 for a brief period.

Well, when I look at these figures I am tempted to say that the peak of infections [of the current wave] probably was early April and that we are near the peak of deaths. 

 

Don't believe Songkram will have much impact with an infection rate that was sky high and is currently dropping.

While I find the listed case numbers as very worrisome and from a lack of testing, the deaths keep climbing upwards.  A few studies and reports indicate the lag time average from being infected to death.  Attached below is just one of the articles I found.  With knowing what the numbers are now and then extrapolating out we may well see over 200 or so deaths a day in the not to distant future.  Many of those have been vaccinated with the initial two doses and never boosted.  Boosters do give a fighting chance for not dying.  Those who wish to say that they would rather stay unvaccinated as the vaccines are untested need to think about there "My natural immunities are better than a vaccine" view.

Walked over to the local Lotus last night to pick up a few items, traffic on Rama 4 at 8 pm was pretty steady as folks were returning from wherever.  Walked inside the store and it was fairly busy, along with many hacking and coughing.  We turned right around and walked back out and to the local 7-11.  People are out and about just like prior to covid when they were sick and were not wearing a mask, at least now they are wearing a mask which will contain the majority of the spread, that is until they take it off to wipe there nose and face right after they have their coughing and sneezing attack and then spit the phlegm out onto the pavement.....

Well if these figure are to be believed from this government it looks like it is working in their favour to re-introduce all kinds of  restrictions on public gatherings and meetings to help them disenfranchise many of the populous from voting for other parties in the forthcoming elections. I would suspect an election will be called when their figures are shown to warrant such drastic actions. Only my cynical opinion of these bunch of corrupt clowns of course

It is unfortunately a product of no testing or limited testing as folks went on holiday and even though sick were to selfish to stay home and then continued the spread.

Lower the cases now... lift entry restrictions for tourists, after next week as predicted triple cases but with the maybe 12k cases for the coming days it is still only 36k so no problems... But the reality????? That is different and because I want that there are a lot of cases, but just a lot are a symptonic, and I am wondering why so afraid??? Publish than the severe cases only and we all know what is going on... but now.....everybody knows there is something not right

Whist I agree with your comment, I believe it is time to move on with life as this virus needs to spread through the world as other viruses have done and still do.

 

The above said, I believe that I confused my previously stated 25,700 infections in my reply as it was deaths since Covid began 2.5 years ago.

 

We are all going to die, that is a given, it is up to us to protect ourselves as we have done since we started roaming this planet, lock downs we know only prolongs the inevitable, the virus mutates so best to get it, surviving it is the objective and to be immune from it for once and for all, if we don't survive it, well we wouldn't have known any better because our time could be up tomorrow, bus approaching head on !!!

 

Sure is we have the flu or a cold, we stay home so as not to infect others, but we really can't expect others to do as we do, it's just life, selfishness is everywhere and always will be, that said, I did stock up on toilet paper ????

Probably 10x higher, but the key metrics are hospitalizations, ICU and intubations.

What does water splashing have to do with COVID spread when there already a zillion people crammed into a Songkran event.  The priorities established by this government are mostly wrong, not based on science, not based on what is good for the Thai common man and based on restrictive political and economic biases.  Time to get a real plan for the future of Thailand.  The current vision is a random sky of air pollution and storm clouds.

Spot on! Positive test results are roughly 1 out of 2, meaning tests, esp. PCR tests, are only conducted if someone seeks medical attention due to more serious symptoms.

Chonburi announces 765 new and confirmed cases of Covid-19 and seven new deaths

 

One person was listed as being in serious condition in Chonburi currently, either on a ventilator or with pneumonia. The person was single dose vaccinated. According to the Chonburi Department of Public Health, the vast majority of recent cases are mild or asymptomatic at 99.589 percent.

The seven new deaths were aged 29, 48, 60, 64, 70, 80 and 88 with severe personal health problems and pre-existing conditions. Four of them were not vaccinated.

New Cases spiked at the beginning of April. The trend had been 22,000 - 24,000, and jumped up for a few days....... just a few days!......... to over 28,000

 

We've known for roughly 2 years that death........ if it's going to happen.......... follows infection/diagnosis by 2 to 3 weeks, on average. 

 

So it should surprise no one....... NO ONE!........ that we're seeing a small increase in deaths NOW........ (!!!)......... 2 weeks after New Cases surged for a few days!

 

What's likely, of course, is the death rate will drop back down (to the 80s and 90s) fairly quickly.......... mirroring what New Cases did two weeks ago! DUH!

Personally, I think it would be great if the news media would explain what's going on.......... (since it's been known for a long time, already! )........ rather than sensationalizing it with shouts of "New High!" (115) and "New High!" (119) and "New High!" Frankly, we can tell very little from the published figures. 

 

Just that up to 2-3 weeks ago infection rates were continuing to rise, as judged from increased deaths today.

Not sure what you find so amusing? New highs in daily deaths are just that, new highs, everyone already knows there's a lag in deaths from infection to deaths, can be anything between a few days to 4 or 5 weeks. Its no huge revelation that needs explaining everyday.

I think you miss the true point if you believe tge case numbers are truly declining and testing is being done on a large scale...your issue with sensationalism is your view, not mine or others when it comes to this topic.  Seems you believe what the government says..

I would love to know more about the number of people that have died due to covid.  

 

Where do they live?

How old?

Previous or current other illnesses.

 

I think these are soo vague because they want to keep control.  As has been written there are large parts of the  oountry that have not be vaxed and could be the areas of the deaths.  

 

If the majority of these deaths are in cities like CM BKK or Pat then I would be more worried.

Let's make one thing clear over 100 years everybody is dead who is living now.... No death no life....Covid, underlying disease, no diseases... Sorry but people die already as long as they are on Earth... I am sorry for every loss because it will hurt, but one day we will go too.. Vaccinations only help for not too sick or hospitalization, but will not prevent to get Covid.. We must accept it .....

Covid now, in my opinion is much milder than it was in the beginning and if you look at 2021 Influenza and Pneumonia case in Thailand those figures are over 100,000 deaths in that year.
