Brunei Darussalam has maintained a high forest cover of 72 percent of its total land area, owing to significant conservation and protection measures as well as reforestation activities.

However, as the Sultanate attempts to achieve economic diversification through incremental increases in gross domestic product, the Sultanate's restricted production forest area is a serious obstacle for the forestry sector (GDP).

This was said by Hajah Tutiaty binti Haji Abdul Wahab, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT), during a webinar on Thursday (April 21) to commemorate the International Day of Forests on March 21.

"We recognise that the forest is a critical component that may directly contribute to the country's economic diversification and GDP growth initiatives.

"As a result, the MPRT is dedicated to creating a sustainable forest management (SFM) system through its Forestry Department to provide continuing resources for the timber industry as well as the advantages of future generations," she stated.
