DPM Prawit, police, military deny interference in Rohingya trafficking probe

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, as well as spokespeople for the police and Defence Ministry, have dismissed an allegation, by exiled Pol Maj Gen Paween Pongsirin, former deputy commissioner of Provincial Police Region 8, claiming that Gen Prawit had interfered with an investigation into human trafficking involving Rohingya refugees almost seven years ago.

 

During an interview with an Al Jazeera reporter in Australia published on Thursday (April 21), Pol Maj Gen Paween, who was in charge of the human trafficking investigation in 2015, claimed that Gen Prawit instructed an aide to ask him to allow Lt Gen Manas Kongpan, a key suspect in the investigation, to be released on bail.

Prawit said today (Tuesday) that granting bail for a criminal suspect is beyond his authority and that the matter concerns the court, adding that Lt Gen Manas was not bailed, was convicted and died while serving his prison term.

Although he denies the accusation he does not provide any plausible evidence.  It is beyond his authority - does not mean he did not try to influence the investigator.  Similarly, that Lt Gen Manas was not bailed does not mean watchman did not try.  The question is, if he tried to get him bail and did not succeed, does this mean his power is slipping or he did not really try hard, just for the form?

This is the issue with the accusations and why it will be like water off a ducks back to Prawit, Chakthip, Surachate- they will just say its baseless accusations, no one has proof. This does not mean its not true, but there is not a lot anyone can do or say. He says yes, they say no.... thats it.

These accusations can only be made whilst in exile for fear of the consequences.  Even in Cambodia accusers have surfaced when their concrete overshoes slipped off.

It appears to be forgotten (or deliberately ignored) that Pol Maj Gen Paween Pongsirin was in charge of the 'investigation' of the Koh Tao murders of the two British tourists and 'fearlessly' recommended the indictment of the two Burmese scapegoats.

 

This was after the real investigator (whose name I forget) was moved off the case after recommending that the local mafia head's son be indicted.

I thought it was the then chief of police that took over the investigation of the murders.
