My friend told me he loved Thai street food very much. He said it wad yummy and delicious. Those were his last words.

I guess that is a better way to die than worrying all the time about healthy food.

I will never forget one BBQ street food guy which I saw most days. One day I saw when most of his raw meat fell down into the gutter. And what did he do? He picked it all up, cleaned it a little, and 10min later it just looked like before, lots of "fresh" meat to BBQ. I never eat anything from that guy again. 

But I still have that bad feeling that he is not the only street food guy who would have done that.

Would it kill anybody who eats it? Probably not. But that something like that happens at all is scary.

Lotsa Thai people die of liver cancer, which is caused by the parasitic liver flukes in uncooked fish sauce.  I doubt that we expats are immune...

You think that doesn't happen in restaurants? one of my first jobs as a kid was work in a kitchen in UK, they used to scrape the mold off the cheese

I think with some cheese that is not a problem.

Most of us dont eat it at all. There is Pla Ra and  their is nam pla. One is used in all Thai cuisine and is basically salt. The other is the stinky sh*t  that can kill you as you say.

Mrs.T says there is a pasteurised Pla Ra that is safe, hmm, I said, if you say so.....😬

What is ptomaine poisoning?

The term Ptomaine Poisoning is food poisoning caused by any of various amines formed by putrefactive bacteria. The word ptomaine comes from the Greek ptōma meaning fall, fallen body, corpse. Ptomaine poisoning nowadays is much more commonly known by the generic term of food poisoning.

There are four main sources of ptomaine or food poisoning:

  • Bacteria – By far the most common source.
  • Viruses – These do not actually grow on food but may be carried in food.
  • Chemicals and Metals – Food poisoning caused by chemicals is rare and is most likely to be caused through carelessness, for example allowing cleaning chemicals to contaminate food.
  • Poisonous Plants – Food poisoning caused by eating or handling poisonous plants, for example deadly nightshade or some fungi; however, this cause of illness is rare.

There are several main bacteria indicated in ptomaine poisoning, when the term is used interchangeably with food poisoning.

That shouldn't be a problem. The 'blue' in Stilton is bacterial mold (albeit perhaps cultured under sanitary conditions).

 

I've seen a documentary before where the cheese is crawling with live maggots and it's considered a delicacy. They eat the maggots aswell as the cheese. They were scooping them off their chin and snotting them out of their nose.

 

Pretty sure it's somewhere in Italy but really can't be ar$ed to Google it right now.

Your post made me look into my wife's kitchen cabinet and I found this:

No.  Tiparos is a manufactured fish sauce that abides by food and health regulations. 

 

Imo it's probably the best fish sauce in Thailand.  Very salty and adds a kick to lots of Thai dishes. 

 

Any food that has the raw smelly crab in,  I leave well alone.

I have an Indian friend.

 

He's lived in the US for decades.

 

I remember the story of when he went back to Mumbai several years ago to visit his parents.

 

He remembered Indian street food nostalgically.

 

When he told his Mom he was going out for street food, his Mom said "No No No you have a Western stomach now"
