I am with 3BB fiber and pay for V.I.P. guaranteed 200 Mbps .Bedroom TV with Ethernet often buffers using Wizz IPTV . Do a Speed Test , OOkla / Fast and they both show about 50 - 70 Mbps .No VPN is used . Daytime in my office , on my laptop using wifi , I get about 215 Mbps . Turn on my VPN ( Surf Shark ) and it drops to 20 Mbps . My phone that is using the house router , shows 200 Mbps not using a VPN .

Do you think that the 50 - 70 Mbps speed in my bedroom  is causing the tv buffering ? Strange thing is that when the TV programme comes back on , it picks up from where it left off , which suggests an IPTV blip ?

3BB techs said my devices were too old , Smart TV 5 years old and T95 Android box 1 year old . Techs connected their android box  and after 20 minutes of playing around achieved 1000 Mbps . Is this b/s ? BTW , the bedroom TV has sometimes hit 220 Mbps speed testing .

I have TMN fiber in my condo. I also use Nord VPN which I can turn on and off. There's also a 5gb router installed in the room, and that's how I access the internet.  I pay for 500 down and 200 up, and that's what I get if I connect without the VPN.  Even with the VPN I sometimes get that, but not always.

I just ran a Speed Test on my desktop with the VPN on 269 down, 69 up.  Usually, it's a lot faster.

Anyway, for reasons I won't go into here, the router in my condo also puts out a regular wi-fi signal, not 5g.  My Apple TV connects to that as it seems to be more reliable that way.  I have Norton on my Apple TV and my download speed without using the 6G are only in the 50 mbs range.  Still, that's usually enough for any streaming service without buffering.  So if your unit is buffering a lot and hanging up while it does, I'd probably blame your equipment. Something is not right.

People don't seem to realise that speed varies greatly depending on where you're connecting to. It helps if the base speed which is measured by these speed testing services is really high to begin with - but that's all.

If you have 1000 Mbps connections to Bangkok yet can only download that file from say Miami at 10 Mbps - it's almost certainly nothing to do with your ISP but the fact that you're connecting almost exactly half way around the world and it may not have an optimal route back to you.

The actual measured speed from your computer to some 3BB connected server in Bangkok is mostly irrelevant when you're connecting to third party services like foreign streaming services, especially if through a VPN - the VPN could help it to continue to be real fast or really slow it down depending on how it's routed, where it is and what type of connection / how many users they have on the node you're connecting to.

I guess you mean a router putting out a 5GHz WiFi signal, as well as 2.4GHz.

Yep.  It's not convenient to hot wire anything directly into the router, so I just use the wi-fi.

50mbps won't cause buffering, i used to watch Live Sky Sports at 10mbps.

The problem is usually the servers being used by your Wizz TV, I've heard others complain for months now.

My 3BB speed also drops when i use my VPN which is why i don't bother using it most of the time

Have you got the VPN protocol set to Wireguard?

I am with 3BB Fibre, in the jungle, and get 1000/500 Mb/s most of the time. Bht 749 including the router, and good service whenever needed.

Turn on my NORD VPN to UK, and it drops down to around 300 Mb/s.

Just did a speed test with my S/S VPN connected to Thailand and got 46 Mbps down and 100 up . I turned off the VPN and got 220 up and down from a Bangkok server . My main reason for using a VPN is to stop being hacked or getting a virus . Is there another way of protection ? Connected by WiFi to my standard mesh router supplied by 3BB . Do you think an upgraded router would improve matters ?

A VPN won’t stop you from getting hacked or getting a virus.   A VPN will add overhead to your connection via encryption and such.   What lowers your throughput.  The other factors are the location of the VPN server and the capacity of the VPN server.

A VPN is as good as howling at the moon. It does not protect against either hackers or virus. Although, it may offer some protection if you are on a public wi-fi.

Common sense and knowing what you are doing is the most important point. Like, do not download exe-files from everywhere (if you are using Windows) and do not visit dangerous websites known for spreading bad stuff.

Using antivirus can be a good idea.

Do not run server services unless you need them.

So what is your actual package? If you are paying for a 1000 but only getting 2-300 normally that does not sound right.

Otherwise how did the techs manage to get 1000?

Here is the international bandwidth map from Thailand to the world down below. Your connection that you pay for is for domestic speeds. No ISP is going to guarantee your speed on another ISP's infrastructure.

And stop using speedtest.net, they cache everything and you get speeds showing up on there that are not realistic.

use https://testmy.net and set the server to Singapore. That will give you a better idea of the actual speed you are getting.

Here you can see your ISP infrastructure limits (bandwidth) inside the country. https://internet.nectec.or.th/webstats/show_page.php?+Ymgsz9+a7B/Kf9DL7TtvFfYmNWPE2x9CJ8j/oJ9c3WYFfN6bcqlf7ASp8Pf4aCIgJaAFLii+JzHZQmh+SVhOg==

When you have a technician at your place doing a test, they are testing to the nearest server, and it is usually their own ISP server. Have them change the location to Phuket if you are in Chiang Mai for example, and you will see that your speed is nowhere near what it is when they test down the street.

Don't bother using the VPN unless you need it to access something, i only use mine to watch LIV golf as it's blocked in Thailand

Naturally however it has got zero to do with the question I asked the Op........
