Chinese Murder Suspect Arrested at Phuket Airport
Picture courtesy of immigration. Thai immigration authorities apprehended a Chinese national wanted for murder after he attempted to flee to Thailand to evade justice. According to reports, the suspect, identified as Quan Guofeng, fled China after allegedly committing a murder. He boarded Flight FM 831 from Shanghai and arrived at Phuket International Airport late night on December 13. Pol. Maj. Gen. Cherngron Rimpadee, Commander of Immigration Division 2, revealed that at 22:00 on December 13, he received orders from Pol. Maj. Gen. Thanit Thaiwatcharamas, Deputy Commissioner of the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, who was assisting the Immigration Bureau, to intercept the fugitive. Chinese authorities had requested cooperation in denying Quan entry into Thailand and facilitating his return to China to face charges. Immigration officers at Phuket Airport were instructed to position themselves near the aircraft’s exit to intercept Quan upon his arrival at 23:15. Coordination with airline staff confirmed Quan’s seat, allowing officers to discreetly detain him upon landing. Pol. Maj. Gen. Cherngron stated that Quan was denied entry under Thai law, which prohibits individuals deemed a threat to public safety, national security, or international relations. Quan is also subject to an international arrest warrant issued by Chinese authorities. The suspect is now set to be deported back to China, where he will face legal proceedings for his alleged crimes. In his statement, Pol. Maj. Gen. Cherngron emphasised Thailand’s robust security measures at immigration checkpoints, supported by the APPS (Advanced Passenger Processing System). This system flags individuals with international arrest warrants across 190 countries, enabling swift action to prevent fugitives from exploiting Thailand as a safe haven. “With the New Year approaching, we are heightening security in line with the directives of Pol. Maj. Gen. Panumas Boonyaluck, Acting Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau. Driver Surrenders After Dragging Victim Over 1 Km in Fatal Hit-and-Run

The driver of a white sedan involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Phuket, has surrendered to police, confessing to drinking beer prior to the crash and fleeing the scene out of panic. Authorities have charged him with multiple serious offenses. The incident occurred in the early hours of December 14. At approximately 03:20 Thalang Police Station received reports of a collision involving a Honda motorcycle with license plate from Phang Nga Province. The motorcycle was found abandoned on Srisoonthorn Road in Sri Soonthorn Subdistrict, Thalang District. The rider, later identified as 22-year-old Mr. Kulchat, was discovered dead over 1 kilometre away in the Cherng Talay area, having been dragged along the road by the fleeing vehicle. Police reviewed CCTV footage and identified the suspect vehicle as a white Toyota Yaris with license plate registered in Phuket. The driver, 41-year-old Mr. Watchara, was contacted by police and instructed to surrender himself along with the vehicle. At around 10:00 on December 14, Mr. Watchara arrived at Thalang Police Station, bringing the white Yaris involved in the collision. Investigators seized the vehicle for forensic examination to collect evidence of the crash. During questioning, Mr. Watchara admitted to being the driver of the vehicle. He stated that on December 13, at approximately 22:00, he was drinking beer with friends at a residence in Sri Soonthorn Subdistrict. He consumed one bottle of beer and left around 02:00 to drive home in Cherng Talay. As he reached the Bang Jo intersection and turned onto Srisoonthorn Road, his car collided with the victim’s motorcycle. Mr. Watchara claimed he panicked and fled the scene, unaware that the victim’s body had become lodged under his vehicle. He then drove back to a friend’s house in Bang Maruan, where he stayed until police contacted him later that morning. Police conducted an alcohol test on Mr. Watchara through a breathalyzer and sent him for a blood alcohol test at a hospital. He has been charged with “reckless driving causing death” and “fleeing the scene without providing assistance or reporting the incident to authorities.” The investigation continues as police gather further evidence to present the case in court. -- 2024-12-15 -

Late-Night Fire Destroys Townhouse, Neighbour Rescues Pet Snakes
Picture from responders. A fire broke out in a townhouse in Soi Phetkasem 48, Bangkok in the early hours of December 14, causing significant damage to the property and two neighbouring homes. Amidst the chaos, a neighbour managed to save his collection of pet snakes, calling them his most valuable possessions. At approximately 03:35 Lt. Wacharapong Maneethong of Phasi Charoen Police Station received a report of the fire. Firefighters, rescue teams, and volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival at House No. 29, Soi Phetkasem 48, the fire was found raging at the rear of a two-story townhouse, starting in the kitchen and quickly spreading to the second floor. The fire also affected two adjacent homes. Firefighters worked swiftly, extinguishing the blaze within 45 minutes. Two individuals, 14-year-old Pathompong Rojanaprajuk and his 56-year-old mother, Mrs. Panida Klanhar, sustained injuries from smoke inhalation and were rushed to Mit Pracha Hospital for treatment. The house owner, 29-year-old Mr. Thanawat Waipricha, was unharmed. Mr. Phusit, a 59-year-old neighbour, recounted his experience, saying, “At first, I saw only smoke. When I opened the back door, I noticed flames starting to spread on the balcony. I rushed to grab my belongings and heard the voices of people escaping from the second floor.” Although the fire completely destroyed the initial townhouse which was the seat of the fire, neighbouring properties sustained only minor damage. Notably, one neighbour managed to rescue his collection of snakes during the evacuation. He carried out seven plastic containers, each housing a snake of various species, and lined them up outside. The incident sparked curiosity among residents, who gathered to watch. The owner of the snakes reassured everyone, saying, “They’re harmless and non-venomous. I keep them for breeding and because I’m passionate about them. They are my most valuable possessions.” Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. -- 2024-12-15 -

Thai-Japanese Researchers Unearth Dinosaur Fossils Over 100 Million Years Old in Khon Kaen

A team of Thai and Japanese researchers has unearthed significant dinosaur fossils, including the ribs of a plant-eating dinosaur and the teeth of a carnivorous species, dating back 100-110 million years. The discovery, made in Phon Phisai District, Khon Kaen, has sparked calls for government support to develop the site as a tourist attraction and educational centre. The excavation began in the agricultural area of Rai Tama Farm, where researchers set up camp for their first day of work. The farm owner, Mrs. Naen Prommarin, 56, revealed that the site has a long history connected to fossil discoveries. She recounted how, in 2006, a local monk, Phra Achan Subin Khantitharo, initially discovered what he thought was an elephant vertebra while collecting rocks to build a temple structure. Upon further examination, the bones were believed to be dinosaur fossils, prompting a report to the Department of Mineral Resources. In 2007, experts from the department confirmed the findings, which included ribs and teeth from a large, long-necked plant-eating dinosaur. Subsequent excavations continued until 2011, when financial constraints and other research priorities halted the work. However, the landowner later donated the site, known as Hin Rong, to the government to facilitate ongoing fossil research. This December, the research effort was reignited under the leadership of Ms. Sasaon Khansupha, a senior geologist from Sirindhorn Museum, in collaboration with Japanese paleontologists. Early findings include fossilized ribs of a sauropod, a herbivorous dinosaur species, and teeth belonging to theropods, carnivorous dinosaurs. The fossils are estimated to be 100-110 million years old. Additionally, the team uncovered petrified wood dating back 700,000-900,000 years and freshwater mollusk fossils. Ms. Sasaon emphasised the importance of government funding to support excavation and research. She stated that fossil studies not only contribute to scientific knowledge but also have the potential to transform the site into an educational centre and tourist attraction, benefiting local communities and inspiring the next generation of scientists. The discovery underscores Thailand’s rich paleontological history and the need to preserve these invaluable assets for academic and cultural enrichment. -- 2024-12-15 -
