I used to enjoy Rooster's weekly ThaiVisa round-up (This Week In Thailand?).

Always a bit of humour and occasional personal anecdote thrown in.  There's nothing like it on AN now, pity.

You've got GammaG, Elvis Presley posting total nonsense, all is not lost 😆

Cack handed with a new phone! They did however just add 2,000 new words that we've had to learn. It's getting harder and harder to keep up with the twenty somethings who play and whose memories are better than mine. My game practice these days revolves around backgammon though I'm still just an upper intermediate player.

I play online Scrabble Go, which says it is using the Collins English Dictionary, but some weird words are allowed. ie KEI is a Korean meeting. I shall have to have a word with Susie Dent about it!  5555

I don't use Scrabble Go but i know there are some differences in the lexicon. KEI is not allowed in face to face Collins tournament play, KAI is.

I'm kept busy with my family but i have developed a great interest in competitive backgammon and wine making. I also love cooking and still play in many professional Scrabble events throughout Thailand. When the kids have flown the roost I plan to leave Bangkok and go and live in Loei where I have a house and land.

The city has been my home since 1985 but no longer is the be all and end all.of my life. My dotage is coming....

Sounds like I was wrong there. Actually happy to hear that.

I wonder if you remember me. I was Thai Visa/ASEAN NOW's weekend columnist for seven years from 2016-2023. Rooster.

I quit abruptly in April 2023 and have not logged on or followed the site or Thai news hardly at all in the last two years. It used to be my whole life!

By chance I saw a story about the "Lady of the Hills" that i worked on in 2019 and and thought I'd log in again and, make my first ever post! (It was always done by editors in the past).

I miss the Rooster days (and April Fool's pranks) and members of a certain vintage may be interested to know that I am now good friends with a legendary poster called Geronimo with whom I play snooker every week.

I'm still going strong, the chicks are now 8 and 12 and my older kids are visiting Ratchayothin next week.

I've hardly worked at all for the last two years and was wondering what to do next!

Cheers,

Rooster.

I'm definitely not interested what are you doing. It is a peaceful time without someone's big ego in front as you show us. 😕

Another newbie who has never read your excellent columns!

If nothing else, this thread is showing who the nattering nabobs of negativity are.

Excellent???😵‍💫 No, it was something, pretending being a journalist. Not a column. Not intelligent, not funny. Just nothing, written by someone begging for attention. Reminds me of ADHS. Boring🥱

Yes I did. It was not my forte at all and I hated it. I was pressured into it somewhat in a management effort to revive falling views and revenues. Don't miss that at all though I do miss writing the column sometimes. I don't follow the Thai news much these days preferring the politics of the US and the UK.

Did you attend a school in the meantime to become a journalist and learn how to write?

Enjoy?

No, waste of space.

Was that you being pounded on by the bar girl in Pattaya?

Why don't you just give it a rest, eh? Nothing nice to say then best say nothing. He always came across as an extremely nice man, not a shred of ill will to his fellow man in him. I'm sorry he's no longer a contributor. Gave a human touch to a lot of what I read here now.

?? Freedom of speech??

I give my opinion even you don't like it.

But in some respect you're right. That, what he meant as a column is not worth to talk about. In reality he showed only his unsuccessful attempts to be a journalist (appointed by himself). In his last days he appointed himself as an admin if I remember right. And he was proud of it.😕. Not many who miss him.  End off.

Oh no, not freedom of speech, please! It's not God given, you know. It may or may not be in a country's constitution or legal framework. And it comes with provisos. Doesn't mean you can say whatever you want without taking the consequences. It's like the old behind the bar pub sign: "Please do not ask for credit, as a smack in the mouth often offends!" Ah, the old English wit.

And I take it you've conducted a properly managed poll of all AN contributors to establish "Not many who miss him."

End of.

Agree.  ThaiVisa was a lot more fun--and I also enjoyed Rooster's weekly round-up.  Asean Now is lacking when compared to TV.   And, staff seem to be quite thin-skinned these days--they suspended me for being critical of the hyped-up stories they were running involving Pattaya--the ones that usually  referred to Pattaya citizens as being 'terrorized'--or some other hyped descriptive--and Pattaya in 'chaos' over some minor event--a small fire in a condo room, someone's gold necklace being snatched, drunk bar fight, etc.  Luckily, there are a number of terrific posters who make AN still well-worth reading.

I remember you and quit reading or even opening your articles when you came out and declared that people should be banned or prosecuted for expressing their view points about COVID.  No, not view points.  You flat out called them liars and that they were spreading misinformation. And you were wrong.

I hope you are doing well (as you've already stated), but the only part I miss, is you telling storied about your competitions in International scrabble tournaments.

Rooster should be older than 62.  I too enjoyed your review of news here in Thailand.  I recall your use of

sarcasm to poke the Prayut mismanagement, esp. the economy.

There is another good source of review of Thai news.  His vlog is called Tim Newton Today (TNT).  Here is a sample:

I was being paid several months behind and all the staff had taken large salary cuts. A new manager came in and a spat I had over the use of AI in translating the news (my main job, not the column) was the final straw. There were some golden years with Jonathan as my line manager but when he left it went downhill for me. I translated ten stories a day six days a week 48 weeks a year writing 7 million words. The best job I ever had though not very well paid.

You contributed something that was uplifting for all of us:

A sense of humor and wry outlook on the shenanigans called life in the Kingdom.

I always appreciated your work and miss your offerings.

What happened to you has become the way of the world now regretfully. I'm so glad I'm retired when I speak to younger folks now and the work life being offered them minus the opportunities that we had during 'the Golden age of life in the world' from 1950-2010.

Those times are gone for good.We can accept that reality but we don't have to be fan boys of it.

You've found other things to enjoy in life and I salute you!

The Rooster is Dead.

Long Live the Rooster!

Can´t you just disappear, and stop harassing a well known and very much liked person on this forum.

When you wanna crow like a rooster you better make sure you sound good.

Where did I harass. The poster asked a question. I answered. Then went onto make statements which made himself look a little silly.

Not my fault as he was trying to strut his stuff and show what a big bird he was.

Since you only joined less than six months ago you obviously do not know of Rooster unless you used to have a previous membership. I therefore do not understand why you should take such a negative view of his logging in!

Rooster is OK.

But, ....Geronimo?
