Spelling errors on TV which are =not= misspellings. How to handle?

Featured Replies

Dear Folks,

Has this ever happened to you?

There you are, happily typing away.

You do not use a 3rd-party text editor to type up the text of your Topic....NO!

And any thinking individual, in order to save time, and to avoid becoming bored with the pursuit, just uses the TV text-editor to add Topics, for the good of the forum.

So there you are, as I say, just happily typing away.

And then, for some unknown reason, you type a word into the TV editor, and suddenly there appears a red line under one or more words.

You wonder to yourself...

Have I, once again, misspelled a word?

TV is ALWAYS right, obviously.

So what to do?

Nothing to be done but to stop your train of thought...and use Gemini to check the word that the TV editor has checked, and found wanting.

This happened to me just this morning.

I was going on about how charging passengers by the pound for their passenger tickets could incentivize Americans to become more fit and trim, and healthier.....

Only to see this red line beneath the word that flowed so effortlessly off my keyboard.

image.png.4c5188695b6a078c1c0de5e247cb22c0.png

BUT....is this word, incentivize, misspelled?

I think not.

Then....please somebody....

Tell me what's amiss here.

Thank you.

Puzzled to be here, for this reason....

Regards,

Gamma

Spell checkers can sometimes be wrong because they rely on a limited database of words, which can miss uncommon words, proper nouns, technical jargon, or homonyms (words that sound the same but have different meanings), making them unable to distinguish between correct and incorrect usage in certain contexts; additionally, they can be tripped up by complex grammar or slang, and may not always offer the most appropriate suggestions for a given situation.

limited database

This was my point.

Any easy way to increase the database of words for the TV Text Editor...I wonder?

What has TV got to do with spell-checking the text I am typing just now?

Isn't an app that I chose to install doing this job?

Speling mistakes on TV....in the sub-titles or somethin ?

No.

I do not use an app for spellchecking.

When I post a comment or a Topic, I just type it directly into the text editor which is provided by TV for free.

Then, when I have finished typing, i push the orange "Submit Reply" button.

This is the simplest, easiest, and best way to compose a comment or Topic....

Or, it seems to be best for me.

I just worry overly much when I see any red lines below the words I have typed.

Not sure how to handle this...meaning....

My anxiety due to this, or wasted time, or getting off-track when becoming distracted by these red lines.

I think we need to increase the extent of vocabulary contained in the TV-Text-editor Spellchecker....

IF and Only IF...this can be easily accomplished, and for free at no extra cost.

Mostly spelling errors in my comments, and in my Topics.

I am seeing red lines under words which have not been misspelled.

(If you want to choose the American spellings or UK spellings as standard...it's OK with me.  Just add to the number of words contained in the TV spellchecker.)

A typical spellchecker dictionary contains anywhere from several tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of words depending on the language and the specific software, with a common range being around 100,000 words for a basic English dictionary.

Incentivise?  Incentivize? Check your settings. UK or US English maybe?

  • Popular Post

"Incentivize" is the American spelling of the word, while "incentivise" is the British spelling. Both spellings are correct.

Perhaps you're too new on this forum to have been using it when it was called ThaiVisa, commonly abbreviated as TV by a lot of energy-saving members.

The current name, AseanNow, I see often being abbreviated as AN, but GammaGlobulin is not the only oldtimer still using TV occasionally.

And, both correct spellings show the same red line under both proper spellings.

The .dat ascii or whatever dictionary file that is used for the editor is simply incomplete and needs to be updated/replaced.

Great idea!

Hope it happens soon.

Too many red lines under words not misspelled.

Sorry.

I already addressed this issue that you mention, and which you have linked, in my earlier comment.

As I stated:

I checked BOTH the UK and USA variant spellings of incentivise and incentivize.....

One is UK

One is USA

Therefore, what do you want me to do...finally.......

Shout if from the rooftops?

I am stating here and now that both spellings show a RED LINE under BOTH  the USA and the UK spelling of this word.

What more can you ask of me, than this?

Here is an image which clearly depicts what I have been stating from the very beginning....

Now do you understand?

image.png.a929740b50ba90a7fec68c3d7ab5d076.png

Please believe me.

I have been aware of the variants of the spelling of the word, incentivize/incentivise, for many a long year.

And, FYI:

image.png.a23b45390ffe4a01a96f9de1296c2f82.png

Now do you see?

Or, please refer to this image which should make it crystal clear:

OK?

It is not the spelling mistakes or grammar that bothers me, it is the many posters who think they are still texting on their smartphones instead of realising they are on a  forum. I can only put it down to typing laziness.

Incentivise incentivize added to the dictionary that's used when I write stuff clears any red lines...

It looks okay to me.

The spelling "incentivize" is US English, while "incentivise" is UK English.

Let me test this.

incentivize

incentivise

No red underline for either word.
