Wallets - What do People Carry Around?

Featured Replies

I addressed this topic in another thread, but I figured it might get more attention here.

For the men: do you carry around wallets with your ATM cards, your credit cards, your health insurance cards, and so on? Basically, your entire existence in your pocket?  And, what back up plans do you have if you lose your wallet?  One minute it's in your pocket, the next minute, it's gone.  And before you know it, someone is spending your money and you have to deal with a major mess.

I had that scare the other day. Fortunately, I found my wallet, but the experience made me think. Why do I carry around all this stuff that I don't really need?  All I really need when I go out  is some cash, and my telephone, to order Bolt taxis. Everything else is unnecessary baggage.  A copy of my passport can be stored on my phone. Ditto for any other document I might need.  My iPhone wallet can be loaded with credit cards. Anyway, there has t be a better way than to carry around my life in my pocket. It's not necessary.

Along with specs, knife, cayenne pepper powder (occasionally), Total Dissolved Solids pen, to test water (3 letter acronym is banned), TP/PT.

Of course if out on the hunt for some snaps ... I may be carrying quite a bit more ...

Drivers license, debit card, cash and copy of passport.

Last couple years I've switched to a Chest bag, means phone, money, insurance, driving licence, condo entry fob, motorbike keyless fob all together, i much prefer it, has advantages over a wallet and carrying things separate

And if you lose or your phone gets nicked?

Eggs in one basket?

I carry a wallet, but nowadays losing my phone would be a much bigger issue than losing my wallet.

What's in my wallet? Cash (not much, I'm mostly cashless), my Thai DL for ID, my condo key card, my BTS (Rabbit) and MRT cards, an ATM card as a backup (I use my phone for cardless ATM withdrawals).

That's it.

Easy…. 1/ Push a button, the old phone is now a brick. 2/ Treat yourself to a new, later model phone. 3/ Push another button to transfer all data to your new phone.

I'm sure I could carry around something that would be easier to keep track of, but my experience made me question why I need to carry around much of anything.  Losing a wallet with my whole life inside while in Thailand would be a real problem.  And I've almost done it a few times.  Once, in a taxi. The driver spotted it before I got out of the cab and closed the door.  Yesterday, I thought my wallet slipped out of my pocket at the pool.

Years ago, when I was in the Army, I lost a wallet, but back then life was simpler and there wasn't much in the wallet that made much difference.  A drivers license, a little money, a military ID and maybe a gasoline credit card.  I could replace all that without much trouble.  My net worth at the time was probably $3, so I didn't have anything to lose in that regard.

Anyway, I'm going to start carrying a slimmed down secondary wallet.  My condo elevator card and some cash.  I don't really need anything else when I'm out, and my phone can carry credit cards and so on.  Maybe I'll keep some cash in a secondary location.

it's very secure, I've even used one of those plastic ties around the buckle thing so it can't come loose. i never undo it, just put on over my head, i should have used one years ago

it's much easier to lose a phone or Wallet when kept separate, easy to fall out of pockets, in a chest bag no need to worry about that

If you never undo it, why have it?

And if your phone IS the new later model?

I must admit I have my Pink Card and Bkk Bank card (really un-neccessay) in my phone case. Only one thing to lose!

If phone in one pocket and wallet in the other, no chance of losing both, unless someone nicks your shorts, or you leave them somewhere!

For iPhone click "Mark As Lost" to activate Lost Mode, which will lock the device and suspend payment cards.

How can you click Mark as Lost if your phone actually IS lost?

No, I don't and have never carried a wallet. I do have a credit card case but I just take out the cards I might need and put them in my pocket, I don't take the lot. Cash, I just have a small amount in my pocket for emergencies. Since COVID most stuff is done using my phone.

I carry everything in a wallet on me, but have also been thinking it's a bad idea.

Thinking of getting a safe and leave credit and debit cards in the safe.

That's 2 things you carry which aren't necessary

Google find my device is very good, can erase data using another device, i have another phone in the condo

I usually carry what I call my golf wallet. Even if just going to the shops or out for a beer. An ATM card, cash and Pattaya Sports Club card. I keep the wallet, copy of Thai D/L ( got sick of police wanting to keep my license and me having to go and pick it up and pay the fine/poIice benevolent fund donation, I now find they are more inclined to take cash on the side of the road, just like the good old days) phone, car keys and reading glasses in a belt / chest bag which also keeps everything together in the golf cart.

Credit cards, passport etc. all stay at home unless I'm traveling away.

I roll with a fanny pack.

Cards.

Cash.

Phone.

lip balm.

ky.

condoms.

wet wipes.

It is sometimes handy to have Pink Card available, but I guess a copy of it on my phone would suffice. ATM can be done via phone app. So only my phone is really needed. Isn't that rather concerning, all my life in my Poco!
