So, anyone thinking about being a 'Prepper' ...

Considering things getting a bit shook up the other day.  How prepped are you, if at all ?  Any thoughts of prepping a bit,?  A solar generator and a few panels would at least provide some energy, for small frig & fan.

We're actually sitting good in that regard.  Wife bought 2 more water tanks last week, now having twelve 2000L tanks, and more than enough for 6 months, (130 L / day), if really needed.

Those, and the garden / greenhouse, along with what's in the freezer, and no worries about food & water for at least a month.   Times like this, and I keep rethinking having a chicken coop and buying a fishing rod.

Solar & BEVs, and most things covered for a month or so, if municipal services weren't available.  Highly unlikely in my life, especially living mid Prachuap Khiri Khan province, the past 8 yrs.  Prior to here, up at Udon Thani for 17 yrs.

Fairly safe from earthquakes, as 600+ kms from the fault line, off the coast of Myanmar.  Too far from the surf, 5 kms, or the hills, 10 kms to the west, to worry about any flooding.  Along with no nearby streams.

Especially ones that declare they are prepping online!😂😂😂😂

I'm sure it's a lot easier to be a Prepper in rural Thailand than it would be to try to be a Prepper in America, on either coast, where millions of people reside.

Imagine the Preppers in NY or LA.  If the grid goes down, where do they think they're going to go? Some people might get as far as they can go on a tank of gas, but then what?  No phone, no electricity.  They say the big cities have enough food on hand to last a few days, at most.  If new food isn't trucked in, there will be millions of hungry people.  Cold hungry people, perhaps, on the east coast, or hungry people in a hot desert in the Southwestern US.  A real mess.   Have you ever been to the desert SW in the middle of the summer?  100 degrees, at night, isn't that unusual, rising to 115 during the day.  Without air conditioning, millions would die.

Personally, I'm not much prepared for anything.  I pay my rent four or five months in advance, so that much is taken care of.  And I keep a little cash, but I otherwise rely on the ATM.  Probably not a good idea.  I should have some gold around, maybe.

Yeah, I think the only realistic preppers are those that own some secluded land which they can quickly access.  Even with a well prepared "bug out bag", your plans could all be all be undone by a blocked highway.  I wonder how many preppers have driving for a while key to getting to their hideaway.

Yes.  He will need a few guns as well.

Was taught how to be prepared during survival training, just need foot wear though not required here and a little covering and go from there.

My guess is that not many of the people in the big cities will get very far.

Some people really do live off the grid.  But they're already there, and if they're in the right place, they might stand a chance.

He even provided us a map.

I have put it in my file in my gun safe.

I already live in a farming village where most things are cooked on wood fires. Avoiding dysentery will be the biggest challenge.

Since I've been teaching in Myanmar for many years, I already had some equipment:

- hand-cranked/solar-powered torch

- solar radio receiver

- 12 volt to 220 volt inverter (to run my laptop from car battery)

- solar panel controller

- 12v battery charger

- LED rechargeable lights

I always carried these in a small bag - buy the car battery and solar panel locally.

Plus I always carry an emergency medical kit - clean syringe/needles, antibiotics, other important medicines.

All of the above were used regularly by me in Myanmar prior to the earthquake, because the infrastructure was so bad....

When the military government allowed me to operate as XZ2A (which they did from time to time), I used my short-wave ham radio transceiver to send/receive emails using the Winlink (winlink.org) short-wave emergency network. That's slow but works OK for text emails.

I already knew how to (practically) build simple water distilleries using plastic bottles, so that I could obtain clean drinking water.

I'm in Chiang Mai right now, and there is little that I can do to help in Myanmar (Mandalay airport is closed etc).  I do know that some foreign teachers are missing, presumed dead in the collapsed Sky Condo building 😞

I always used to eat out. The kitchen cupboards were always bare. But several years ago, after a very bad wet season, and floods made it dangerous to go out on my bike, I started stocking up with some tinned, dried and frozen foods, and a few extra cases of water. I cook more at home now, so it rotates out, but at least I have a couple of weeks stock. I also have one of those small portable gas cookers so even if the electric goes off, (which it often does), I can at least have a coffee or cook something.

if the s**t really hits the fan, things would go south very quickly. We only have to look back at the panic buying during Covid. who would have thought the biggest shortage would have been toilet rolls?

2 or 3 sacks of rice would probably be a better backup(around 2,000bht).

And one of those ceramic filter straws (150bht).

Toilet rolls were the shortest in supply when there were nationwide strikes in the UK  in the 1970s. As students we would have to raid the student halls of residence toilets for some even though we didn't live there. We called it 'liberating' then, not nicking, as if to justify it.

? Google tells me that Bangkok is 1,332.54 km from Mandalay, the epicenter of the recent quake.  So I'm not sure how safe you can feel 600 km away from a fault line.  Although rarely, can happen anywhere.

12 water tanks?  As somebody else commented, preparing for doomsday?

I never understand why so few, if any, Brits have never taken to using bidets or the simple bum gun. Far cleaner, far more convenient.

What you prepping for. Doomsday?

Not really prepping for anything.  Just like being independent of govt & municipal services.  And saving money is always a plus.  Solar & BEVs eliminates PEA & petrol bill, so about 10k baht a month saved.   ROI should be about 2 more yrs (5 total) depending how much more we drive and abuse the ACs.

12 water tanks seems like a lot, but not when watering the lawn, garden & greenhouse.   Last year when reservoirs were low, they limited the water supply, along with very low pressure.  Actually turned it off during the day for about 10 days.   So when it was on, everyone using and pressure was crap.

It rains enough to fill all 12 up, at end of rainy season, and we really don't use until March, April & May, unless they're working on the water lines.

'Wife' has a 12 ga, but unless it really hit the fan, don't need.   End of days is fantasy land.   Got that when my landlord in Udon Thani was a border patrol boss & gun club member guy, and made it simple to get.  Had firearms all my life, so no issues there.

600 kms is far enough.  Single story, very well built, won't be shaking like skyscrapers.  Seen photos of Myanmar area, and plenty of homes are still standing.   Not like strong quakes are common here.

Since we got the solar & water, at worst, can always sleep in the car, in AC comfort.

Khun LA, it would be a great irony if all set, you are informed the proposed Canal Zone would be including your place. Sorry, thought just popped into my head as you seem well prepared otherwise. An ex Thai gf once observed that if there was and disaster, she would seek out a faring as we seem to always have a bit of stock laid back. Thais, continue to be more daily oriented. Consistent with living in the moment, realizing that there is a limit to controlling the unknown tomorrow and the economic reality that many stillcannot afford the freezers, more expensive preserved foods (anyway, fresh is healthier). Sorry, just pondering.

I'm more worried about a possible world war. Trump appeasing Putin who is encouraged to take on Poland/NATO, with China invading Taiwan in the confusion and subsequently dominating Asia.

Would Thailand or your home country be safer if nuclear war errupted?

I watched 'Threads' the other week. I'm not sure any 'prepper' would want to emerge into a post nuclear world as portrayed in this TV movie.

I forgot a bolt scoped .22 and a pump 12g, with 5000 rounds each.

Id probably go with a vintage Win 52 Sporter to add some class to my Aqualaung like survival appearance.

The Reality is.....

8417814087290088.jpg

Always keep about 2 weeks food in stock. Wife has shop, so a lot more food also, even if not really healthy stuff. Do not have the capital to do much more, Have plans for greater self sufficiency, just need a bit more capital for each plan, do about one thing a year. Maybe Yagoda can spare some?

Live 200 metres from the farm, have fish ponds, fruit trees, small vegetable garden, solar fan. Family have poultry, fish ponds, same farm. A couple of old family guns exist.

Main thing is be aware of what might come in the near future. I knew Covid was going to be big - warned UK family to stock up a month before the crap hit the fan. In Thailand just stayed off grid for the first few months.

Yeah bout 6 months' worth booze in the spare room.

Old snap ... GH has 4 water tanks now.  Got 2 more lots, 40 meters away, that haven't decided what to do with, or plant yet.
