Tributes paid to 'Mr Manchester'

Anthony Wilson

Anthony Wilson was an influential figure in the "Madchester" scene

Tony Wilson's life

Hundreds of tributes have been paid to Tony Wilson, the man behind some of Manchester's most successful bands.

The founder of Factory Records, the label which launched New Order and the Happy Mondays, died of cancer on Friday at the age of 57.

Wilson, dubbed Mr Manchester, was diagnosed during a routine visit to the doctor last year.

TV presenter Terry Christian said: "No Tony Wilson, no Manchester music scene."

Although he was suspect with his comments about Liverpool, and an MUFC supporter, I forgave him because he gave me two of my favourite bands- Happy Mondays and New order.

He was also involved with setting up the Hacienda, which had a big influence on the dance scene.

It's frightening to think that these people who had a big influence on my life: Strummer, Peel, Wilson have now all died. None of them that old either.

We need the Wilson/Peel types as an intidote to the Cowell's of this world.
