Cambodia 'E' visa for Thai nationals

Featured Replies

I plan to go to Cambodia for a few months with the Mrs, she's Thai. We both need a visa that can be extended so it needs to by an 'E' type visa for 30 days which is then extended inside the country. I've done this a few times before. We will only be going for about 90 days max and I know a 3 month extension is easily available - or it was.

The question is, due to recent border issues - are they still issuing the online 30 day 'E' type visas to Thai nationals for arrival on a flight to Phnom Penh from Bangkok, probably with Thai airways?

Also if anyone has any information about in country extensions for Thai nationals based on very recent experience that would be helpful to me.

I'm not going until October some time.

recommend Cina travel on street 130 near riverside

Yes, that's the one I'm going to use this time - nearer and more accessible than the 'Call Kim' one which is over the other side of the river.

The only worry is - are Thai citizens having any issues with getting visas or in country extensions?

So, update on this.

We both applied for and received e-visas 30 day E-Type - the one you can extend and arrived in the new Phnom Penh airport

Immigration was empty, I went first and the Mrs heard one of the people hanging around say Thai and she looked around to see him pointing at her.

What came next should be considered a warning for anyone considering visiting Cambodia with a Thai national for more than a short period of time.

I got my 30 day stamp as expected, they told her she could only get 14 days entry because the E type visa is for people who have jobs in Cambodia - this is pure nonsense, she can do whatever she wants, her intent at the point of entry is none of their business.

She is essentially a housewife

My point here is - they are targeting Thai nationals entering on valid visas issued directly by the central government in Cambodia through the official e-visa portal when they land at the airport and it doesn't matter if they get a 100% valid visa or not - they took a couple of extra days to process her visa than mine, I suspect they were vetting her - had she failed whatever process they have in place then she would have been denied the visa - which would have been fine - we would simply go somewhere else - but they granted both our visas through the government website and targeted her at immigration.

Now I very much doubt this is in any way an official policy - but that's it - she's had enough - so we're leaving and will never go back to Cambodia.

They also completely <deleted> up the visa 'stamp' that they did issue which is a kind of QR code label and ended up granting her about 2 months of entry instead of the expected visa stipulated 30 days or 14 days which they said "accept 14 days or she will be denied entry" - all while having a valid government issued visa in her hand.

So, I'm sounding the alarm here - the gloves are off - if you're a Thai - don't go to Cambodia and expect to stay there for more than 14 days - which is what you get if you turn up without a visa - because at least some of the officials at the airport are overriding the Government Ministries decision to issue visas - this means it's a free for all when you land and they are definitely targeting Thai people.

I will be spreading this word far and wide but not until we have left Cambodia and we are definitely leaving, nothing will fix this. She was already apprehensive because of potential 'hate' but I talked her around and said lets give it a go for a few weeks and feel the situation out before making any rash decisions.

Didn't even make it past the airport without an anti Thai hate incident by the one who appeared to be calling the shots, so we're out...and soon.

Didn't Cambodia extend a 60 day visa waiver to Thais back in June or July (strange timing, but that's what I heard)?

Sounds like they didn't, as you are saying they could offer the 14 day visa waiver.

She had a full 30 day business visa issued last week, same as me - no problem for me as I'm on a British passport - her - treated as a tourist arriving without a visa - they didn't care about the visa in her hand

Now that visa she was approved for last week is a proper business visa and can be extended but they didn't care

So some low level official is overriding official government policy.

Now she doesn't want to stay here at all - she's done with the place and we're going to leave.

The point of this post is to outline that the hate is real and it begins for Thais before you even leave the airport - they had absolutely no problem with me - I had the same visa as her as well - 30 day E type visa commonly called 'business visa' but it's not - it covers all sorts of non tourist purposes.

its strange the anti Thai hate in Cambodia does not carry over to Thailand which does not hate Cambodians
My khmer wife has zero problems here and after living here 14 years everyone knows she is khmer

people often tell her in the market and such that Thais dont hate Cambodians

Nearly 3 weeks ago, my friend came to Thailand from Cambodia, essentially in transit to Australia (he had to change airports though). He told me that Cambodians were nearly left in tears because they were treated very harshly by Thai immigration, even those who were essentially transiting to other countries.

So it's definitely happening in both directions.
