Thanks again for all the help.

For now I've added this package, which will see me through until I leave for home.

Excuse me for playing catchup with the info that's been given above, but I've just looked more into the GoMo sim and it's packages.

I knew nothing of this firm before, and when it was mentioned above, I thought it was part of AIS.

I know it was said it was only for Thais, but I'm wondering if my Thai wife (who is in the UK) can sign up, have the sim sent to me here in TH, then we register/activate once I'm back home in the UK?

Has anyone tried this?

When I've just registered for True and AIS I just had to upload my passport, take a selfie, and then receive an OTP. Surely this would work even if abroad?

And am I right, to make the order she would first need to state what package is required (ie 1 year 10GB) then I would tack on the monthly, larger packages as and when needed.

It would be good to set this up for the next, longer winter trip.

When your wife is in town, you can install their application on the phone. Everything is done via their application.

P.S. Don't forget that you have free Premier League viewing if you like that sort of thing. You need to apply it before midnight.

Thanks, all good info.

So, I will be trying to order a sim, direct from the GoMo website rather than Shopee/Lazada.

Just in case they cross reference the order details with the registration details.

I'll fill it in Thai, and all with my wife's details, with her help of course.

Once I'm back in the UK the test will be whether it can be registered there, or not, but for the sake of 99 baht, and the potential of good savings in the future, I think well worth a shot.

I'm guessing as long as the sim is in a phone at the time of registration (and online with WiFi) it can then accept an OTP for the app.

The only hiccup will be if it actually needs to be on the AIS network at that time.

We'll see...

It's doesn't make a difference from where you order it. I imagine it not being able to register on the network being an issue. But equally, it might not be an issue. Keep us informed 🙂

If your router has a connector for an external aerial, have you considered getting an external (to the router, not the condo) aerial from somewhere like Lazada.

There is a plan by NT called “Thunder Net”. It specifically says in the package you get that it doesn’t offer any speed guarantee above 8 story buildings.

Cell tower antennas aim horizontally, not upward. Most cell towers are designed to cover users on or near the ground.

The antennas are tilted slightly downward (called downtilt) to focus signal strength at street level where most people are.

On high floors (especially above ~10–15 stories), you’re often above the optimal signal beam, meaning you get weaker or more scattered signal.

You want to be receiving signals in the 700 - 900 MHz band, as they travel farther and can penetrate buildings easier.

The only thing that MAY improve your speed is a phone signal booster that is fixed at a window nearest to the tower you are receiving from. Something like this https://th.shp.ee/3QcqKMY

Use cellmapper app or opensignal map and stand in different locations in your apartment to see where you get better signal.

TOT/NT Thunder Net has long since gone.

As you state Band 28 might have brought some improvement with True, but neither of his devices cover that band. In fact their best result was on Band 1 (2100 MHz).

They haven't stated which band turned out the best with AIS.

You can buy it right here!

The real reason for poor performance on higher floors is weak radio waves. Different SIMS will only make a difference if the provider has base station higher or nearer to the level of the receiver. Cell site radio waves mostly radiate outwards and less so upwards. Many times in the past, I've been at rooftop bars and had zero signal at all. Sounds crazy but that's how it was (this with DTAC mostly before moving to AIS, since when I've not been to many high rooftops). Even WiFi has the same issue, a few floors drirectly above the router, and signal virtually nil. Of course, concrete and steel will degrade signal further.

No...you cannot. Check the dates.

Moving on... do you have a problem with the former developers...or something else?

Matrix? I bought one of their condos pre-plan, they missed the hand over date three times, offered me a 32 inch tv as compensation. Took about a week of shlepping other office daily to demand my money back, which of course they didn’t want to do, but their own contract obliged them to. Got my entire payment back. Happened to visit the development as a friend was looking for a condo to rent, and the place was falling apart. The door frames were crumbling due to termites, the pool was obviously not being maintained, lifts were out of service. Glad I got my money back and didn’t have to continue to deal with them.

and the NT cards are still available on shopee, you just activate them on the NT website. I’ve still got one in a pocket router as an emergency back up for my cloud connected CCTV. And I’ve also tried it on the 19th floor of a hotel in Bangkok and it received about 3 Mbps whereas on the ground it was around 30-50 Mbps, depending on how close you were to a tower.

Looks like I'll be safer just going with AIS, especially after what I just read...

I wrote this earlier in the thread as I had just read an article about all the small players (MVNOs) being cut off.

The article is here:

https://www.yozzo.com/mvno-news/thailands-mvno-sector-died-today-due-to-regulatory-failure/

Maybe that's why Jake is saying NT is no longer?

The OP is talking about mobile 4G connection, not fibre.

But isn't it the same distance to the cell tower from the top of a building as from the bottom, or there abouts.

So just to report, the GoMo sim has been activated by wifey back in the UK without the need of the simcard there.

She downloaded the app, went through the activation process (scanned a picture of the sim barcode that I sent her, scanned her ID card, then done a selfie).

Once she confirmed it had been activated, she shut her app down, I opened my app here, then logged in, prompting the app to send me a OTP to my phone here.

OTP entered, I logged in, and now all is up and running.

Anyway, confirmation that it's possible to activate, register etc, even when in different countries.

As for the original reason for the thread:

Thanks for all the pointers, I've certainly learnt a lot, and still have a lot of playing to get an optimal signal.

I'm not planning to upgrade my phone or router yet, but I realise it'll probably make a difference to my speed.

Ditto for any signal boosters etc. I'm not planning to invest yet.

Just changing networks seems to be the simple fix for now.

Thanks to everyone for your contributions.
