I can beat that. I see evidence of Farangs that come to Thailand and spend most of their day playing on the computer or cell phone. Forums, trolling, surfing, chatting, arguing, insulting, etc., What'

We can wonder why people do things. There is no rule about not having an opinion or talking about it.

Eating only your home country food in a foreign country can look odd and some people may wonder why they are here if cultural difference is not their cup of tea.

I suspect that even in Nakhon Nowhere there will be a McD nearer than Pattaya.

Cold might improve the taste

WTFAY?

Chiang Mai has NINE McDonalds now. The last time I went to one there was a noticeable amount of Chinese concrete dwellers. These people live in condos close to malls and shopping centers so they can spend their time in these horrible artificial environments eating fake food under bright lights. I eat McDonalds once every few months but this really grossed me out and I don't even want to go back now.

EDIT: just checked Bangkok and they have only 19 but the city is 10x more populated than Chiang Mai. Rose of the north my ass! that's a sick.

Last time I talked to someone who visited China they said it's all about plastic tables and those sterile environments now. It's also about where other people go and congregate.

I was thinking of visiting China several years back and asked them about those tea gardens, curved wood bridges, koi, some guy with a long white beard in a feng shui garden raking sand, etc. They said that's pretty rare these days unless you are very wealthy.

I needed to go the mall recently to buy some pants and it was packed full of these Chinese people wandering around. In recent years Chiang Mai has built some very tall condo buildings next to malls and she says the Chinese buy them so they can live out of the malls. They're like animals living in captivity or something. They'd be better off in Bangkok I think but Chiang Mai be more affordable for them. It's really sad what Chiang Mai is becoming.

Where were you Central Airport, Central Festival or Maya?

It must have gotten worse since I left. Some of it is the safety factor. Chinese really want to feel safe. They like that enclosed setting probably because it's well lit. I think it's also a status thing, like saying I can afford to buy top brands here and not eat street food, etc.

Eric.

How can you be so sure that all they consume is fast food? Could you let me know if you are closely watching their every meal and taking extensive notes?

After about three months in Thailand eating nothing but Thai food. why not!! Always looking for a good burger after sometime, but when McDonalds is the only burger joint, works for me. Burger King in BKK.

It was festival next to those large towers they keep putting up around there. It's the literal worst part of Chiang Mai but they seem to flock there because it must be like China where they came from.

Yes I think you're right about safety. They seem really sheltered and insular. Compared to the European tourists I never seem out and exploring, just clustered around heavily urban environments.

BTW, not sure when you left CM but this was 2011 compared to 2024 from the same angle (used to be CPAC cement factory). When I moved to CM in 2005 I would never guess it could 9 McDonalds now. Not what I signed up for so I live out in the mountains now and only come in when I need to.

Why were you in that area? I very rarely went that side of the Ping River. Maybe went to that mall only once in 10 years.

Sounds to me like you missed the point.  I would barely call McD food, much less foreign food.

Nah not missed the point. I don´t think it´s to be called decent food, either, but who am I to judge?

If you're in Ubon, you can cross the border into Sisaket province and get a good burger at Leos and Hong Kong Garden.

On the other hand, one must admit that the McDonald's in Thailand are very well served and must better quality then in many western nations.

The bread buns in Thailand are well puffed, fresh and not reheated and spongy like one can find in many European cities. The worst I ever had were in France.

This being said, it is also a fact that thai food restaurants in popular tourist towns are increasing their rates and/or decereasing the portions, Not surprised thus why foreign fast food is getting more and more popular. At one point, consumers are just fed up in getting scammed all over...

There is a particular soup (I never learned the name) that tastes like they scooped it out of a sewer.

I prefer the McDonald's in Thailand rather then the Burger King's here that just don't seem to get that flame cooked steak right.

Either, are far cheaper and better value for money. The local cuisine restaurants are charging more and more. Not to mention their meager portions.

Scraping the bottom of the barrel with this one, Bob. I occasionally grab a Big Mac, but probably have 1000 Thai dishes to that one burger. If you saw me in there (presumably you’re also indulging) would you lump me in with the rest of the uncultured, uncouth slobs? Fk a doodle do!

well it's the closest mall the north of the city. My wife works in Mae Jo so if I'm in the city it's the most northern part.

Thailand is one of the few countries that serve DOUBLE fish filets. I go to Pattaya twice a year and it's one of my few guilty pleasures.

You hit a sensitve point there on my taste buds and belly. I also just love that Double Fish filet that aiways comes fresh. It's double decking very inspiring for later playing in Pattaya in fact...😂

And because so FEW people ever order that monstrosity, it's gonna be fresh and not be a lump that's been sitting under a heat lamp for the last couple of hours. I believe it's one of the worst things you can introduce into your body, so I keep it to twice a year and feel ok about it.

Yeah the filet goes good.

Be awesome if they did one for the breaky menu.
