  • I always get confused whether you're supposed to add the milk to the cereal or to the cardboard box.

Me too.

And I figured that quite a few forum members are living on a set amount each month, and would appreciate knowing what's on offer, when and where.

I still think it should be a permanent thread as it's got to be useful for some.

These type of threads do appear from time to time, probably easier just to start a new one each time, one recently on heinz baked beans another that Big C now cheaper than expat shops

A lot of the new products appearing to be U.K. and European brands, aren't. There are brands purchased by other companies from other countries that are suitably ruined.

Cadburys is but one example. Allow the Americans to get their hands on anything and they will wring the quality out of it in the name of profit.

The love of money is the root of all evil.

Go to the UK and you'd be hard pressed to find anything but the cheapest of the cheap that contains additives and preservatives. It's the other way around in the USA.

Look at the labels before you purchase. Cadburys chocolate is not the same product that you knew...and I know the Cadburys.

The Heinz baked beans one was a Red Herring. They were a promo to introduce the beans that are now being made in China. Two for the price of one when first introduced. A product that was hardly great in the first place, now being made in China for the export market.

it was a good deal, 2 for 69 baht, when I've seen them at 85 baht each in an expat shop and yes they do taste the same, people imagine they are different because it says China on the label

Obviously you are welcome to have an opinion @scubascuba3, though another member @proton purchased them without knowing they were made in China and stated that the 'tasted different', then looked at the label.

After your posts on the cheap Birds Custard and Cadbury's chocolate buttons, bearing in mind what I posted earlier about the changes in the quality of some foodstuffs, I wouldn't be taking your judgement as any kind of recommendation. I hope you aren't offended, but I prefer to be honest in my statements.

I binned them for the taste, or I should say no taste. Add milk to them and they get very soggy.Expiry date was November
My breakfast is at least 3 times a weak granola, and bought loads of it at 40 baht for 500 gram during the same sales.

Last 5 packages a few days ago were 20 baht. You can keep unopened granola for a long time past the BF

Most of the from home brands I have tried here are not the same as not imports, they are made elsewhere usually Asia. Eg Mcvitties digestives here taste mouldy and soft even when fresh, Kellogs all bran here is nothing like the product in the UK etc etc

Return trip to aus would be 30K+... how much was the coffee ?

That's just as likely a weather/temperature issue.  The chocolate buttons and birds custard i bought yesterday taste the same as i remember

@scubascuba3 Suitably childish as always. Do you have any examples of deep discounts at Big C?

I've posted quite a few thus far. Maybe you can try to make yourself useful for once.

as I've already told you i ignore your recommendations and always have you are only useful for sim info, why do you need to keep coming back with another profile? jamjar and all the rest i can't remember there's so many

@scubascuba3 Is more proof that your taste buds cannot be trusted, when it is generally accepted that the Cadbury's chocolate recipe has changed. Methinks that you are not particularly discerning for when it comes to foodstuffs.

Are you getting so desperate that you need to begin lowering yourself to snitching level. No one cares about usernames, unless they are somewhat immature. Oh, you aren't lowering yourself, as that is where you normally reside. Understood.

I'll admit you're better than you were before under other user names, the meds and counselling must be working 👍

@scubascuba3 I apologise for interrupting you from your enjoyment of Birds Custard with Chocolate buttons.

Is that something to which all adults should aspire? Have you tried adding baked beans to the mix?

Been after custard but no have in Bangkok, one thing I noticed was Marks and Spencers produce is the same as back home, they almost always have big reductions when the sell by date is not far off

Have you tried Royallee? it's different to Birds just like Makro's mayonnaise and salad cream is different but i like it

Even the regular prices with no promotion around Pattaya or Isaan are far cheaper then any so called promotion prices in Hua Hin,  no matter in which store...

@scubascuba3 That's the brand of custard powder I used for my Christmas puddings. Bought in Friendship. I don't eat custard very often and it's a relatively large pack, so it's been sitting in the cupboard for quite a long time. So those small packs of Birds custard for 20 baht may be convenient. Not sure that I would pay more than that for them anyway.

Good to see that you made yourself useful, to @proton in this case. He needs cheering up. :wai:

At my supermarket, they had natural Himalayan salt reduced, best before date 15th of November 2025. I thought to myself,  the salt has been In the ground for tens of thousands of years, they mine it, put it in a bottle and put an expiry date on it.

Surprised you lowered yourself to eat custard, Bird's is made with water but i think next time I'll add milk powder to make it creamier

@scubascuba3 man, you are freaking me out. Who makes custard with water?!  Now you are writing about milk powder?? What's going on?!

I had to run a search and indeed discovered there are two kinds of Bird's Custard powder. One is Instant, which is what you purchased and the other Original. Instant suggests adding water, wherein with the Original, you add milk.

Thanks for the 'heads up' to not even think of buying the Instant version. I'll stick with the Royallee powder for now and look at something like Bird's Original when that runs out. Mainly because Royallee contains food additives.

Instant is not for me, with it's sugar and Palm oil...

Bought a couple of packs of McV Chocolate digestives that were an infuriating single brick sized block!

All the ones I get from Makro end up in a block like that. Even if they are in an igloo within a couple of minutes of leaving the checkout.

What else you expect when you see frozen goods often stored on a pallet beside the freezer for hours, and are completely thawed before loading in the freezer

The custard powder contains milk powder, you realise some thai milk brands make milk using milk powder? the custard is pretty good but I'm going to try 50/50 water and milk and see if it's better, should be

Yes, @scubascuba3 I read the ingredients and posted details on them. The Instant custard powder contains milk products, sugar, palm oil, maltodextrin...

Original custard powder is much better. No weird additives. Also can just add fresh milk, rather than 'milk' made with powder.

A quick update...

I've just got back from Big C, Klang branch and saw hardly anything of interest like before.

One notable update though, the Bird's 3 Pack of instant custard is back to full price....

IMG_20251027_185040.jpg.704292fa15bbb0f870361e574f0e2dd3.jpg

Yet the packets are old as the best before date is still short....

IMG_20251027_185125.jpg.e1d6e3132b134cfce6fb0488e96c0b1e.jpg

Gotta be careful when buying at whatever price, and make sure to check the dates.

Another thing I noticed was the mcv rich teas, which were on offer last week in the Tai branch, were going for full price in Klang today.

IMG_20251027_185153.jpg.a7f83d26cbcc335399142048aaf7e057.jpg

Pretty sure they were only around 20 baht last week.

Seems like the different branches have different promotions, and probably at different times, so worth jumping when there is an alert.

That is if you don't mind the food that's on offer.

I also buy from the shop and transfer to an igloo in the truck... there are a few ice packs in there too. But my Choc Digestives appear to be like that on the shop shelf...... been in the sun in the loading bay perhaps!
