I Can’t Believe Thailand Is STILL Obsessed With Masks

Yup - people hang on to the Covid thing...   they are so hung on to the Covid thing they can't get past it and understand that particularly in the city - people mask up not because of Covid - but because of pollution.

Thats always been the case - look at motorcycle riders waiting at the traffic lights - they're masked up.

People walking down Sukhumvit Rd - many are masked up.

For many the masks serve a dual purpose - against pollution, and also as a barrier against the sun (as silly as that sounds)...

No one is bothered about Covid anymore - except when threads try and make it about Covid like this one.

And it's Olympian level gaslighting to assume I am the one still hung up when this country clearly still hasn't moved on, I am moved on back in 2021, like the rest of the world. It is Thais and other Asians who are still hung up, not me. Clown.

When all about you seem to have lost the plot and appear unhinged, it might be worth checking whose script you’re actually reading from, there’s a non-zero chance the door swinging loose is actually yours...:whistling:

A mind genuinely boggled at another one spectacularly unhinged.  Who said it's a slow news night ...

Why so obsessed with people wearing masks?

It does not affect me in any way. I really don't care whether people wear masks or not.

A lot of people wore masks in pre- COVID times.

Up to them.

Nothing to get so stressed about.

Tell me then why is it I see so many mask up when going INTO stores? BTW surgical masks have zero efficacy against pm 2.5. and as is now known arguably the same for covid.

They can't accept that their beloved Thailand is no longer the Land of Smiles, so they make up comforting lies in order to try and make you feel like you're the one who is deranged, irrational and obsessed, when quite clearly it is many of the locals who are.

Jaysus man - how many times do people have to repeat themselves? The answers to these questions are in the OP and throughout the thread. If you enjoy being served by faceless robots in face masks then you are not human as far as I am concerned.

I really don't care what you think.

You obsession with people wearing masks seems to be borderline mental illness. I hope you get the treatment you need when you return home.

I am simply a visitor who travels to many places and notices a brainwashed society when he sees one. Any mildly perceptive person would notice that Thais are still way more obsessed with covid than most other countries. It's obvious as soon as you land at the airport.

I find it remarkable that so many of you defend the society of a country where the current PM described foreigners as "dirty farang" - Stockholm Syndrome personified.

What makes you think it is a COVID obsession. Many Thais were wearing masks way before the pandemic.

Wearing a mask at an airport makes sense. I have picked up a bug many times after spending hours in an aluminium tube with 300 people

Why is it so important to you?

Have you noticed many people wearing socks and sandals?

Start a thread on fashion crimes.

1 minute ago, PerfidiousAlbion said:

Barely anyone wore masks in Thailand before covid, you would see the occasionally street food vendor or motorcycle rider wearing one before 202 and that was it. None inside shopping malls, supermarkets. airports e.t.c.

Socks and sandals are incomparable, they have never been weaponized to create division in society like masks have. They also don't inhibit human interaction in any way. Like I said, you have no critical thinking skills - this is why you can't understand or engage meaningfully with even very basic points. You're a simpleton. Oh and btw - myself and millions of others fly all the time, never wear a mask and never get sick from being at an airport - you're weak and psychosomatic.

You seem to know an awful lot about Thailand for an alleged visitor

What was your previous user name before you were banned?

Start thinking of the next one now as I don't think this current iteration will be around long.

Please go out and take deep breaths to clean some of that pm2.5 out of the beautiful air outside today.

As for indoor air - if you have no seals around doors and windows and air cleaners inside, air is as polluted inside as what it is outside. Please don't tell me you don't know the difference between aircon and air cleaner...

And I know it's hard to believe, but even some prominent Thais have come out and expressed dismay over the endless fixation with muzzles - see below as an example

image.png.1011011731dc0e9f088a1676b74af683.png

Because these prominent Thais don't want to be reminded of their failure that none of the clean up promises of air pollution has been met. Stand at a traffic junction and inhale the fumes plus polluted air makes me wear a mask. Everybody to their own.

13 hours ago, PerfidiousAlbion said:

The answer to that question is quite literally in the quote - not hard to figure out why. Masks create emotional barriers between people, they are like trying to figure out a jigsaw puzzle with half the pieces missing. I know we live in a world full of vacuous and empty-headed morons who play inane TikTok videos out loud on their phone, but some of us still appreciate genuine human connection. Also, on a purely superficial level, they are utterly hideous to look at - they dehumanize us and make us look like robots, thereby inducing a miserable atmosphere for those around them. They also serve us constant reminders of the medical tyranny we had to endure and perpetuate unnecessary levels of fear and anxiety. We could also argue that they violate some of the core tenets of the social contract - since they embolden criminals by normalizing a society where people's identity is anonymized. Before 2020, it was illegal to cover your face in indoor public space - we should revert back to pre-pandemic norms. Ok, if you have health issues fine, but let's be real, 99% of the clowns still wearing muzzles today do not have any underlying health conditions - their insistence on stinking out the atmosphere and ruining the culture is driven by cowardice, paranoia, docility and lack of critical thinking.

You should fill your time doing something useful instead of making up a justification for your baseless imagination.

Been here a long time but you win. I dont think I have ever come across someone who has been unable to accept the way of life here as much as you.. Do you really think the Thai people give one flying <deleted> about what you think?

Why not get on the anti rice topic next. It is fattening and the Thai's eat white rice not the healthy brown rice I bet you eat.

I believe there are a number of reasons.

Firstly - Mask wearing has always been quite common in Japan - this is from the perspective of protection of others (i.e. when someone has a cold - they wear a mask).

This has taken off in Thailand, though the underlying reasons maybe misunderstood and a lot of people wear mask to protect themselves from pollution and respiratory illnesses others may be carrying.

This is also combined with the fact that mask wearing has become far more socially normalised (apart from the Karens this seems to really upset).

Then there in an element of 'fashion' part - and yes that seems daft, but look at all the females with braces, even fake braces.

But - for the most part people are wearing masks as they believe they are protected from a) Pollutants (when outside) and b) respiratory illnesses (colds / flu / covid) when inside - This is not an irrational fear of Covid - some just don't want to get sick with 'anything' and believe the mask will protect them...

People also wear amulets believing they will be protected - so its understandable the same minds will think a mask would do the same  -  its hardly an issue worth of so many oddballs getting unhinged and upset about.

To be fair, I’ve had the flu plenty of times, and colds too. If unwell people wore masks, more people would be protected - but we also have to evolve with these illnesses and keep up with antigenic drift. Catching a cold or the flu regularly isn’t inherently harmful, except when it’s a particularly nasty strain - a “bumper year,” so to speak.

That said, I don’t care much about mask-wearing. I’m glad when sick people wear them, but I see no point in perfectly healthy people doing so outside of protection from pollutants. Honestly, I can’t be bothered.

All this thread really does is highlight just how mentally unhinged some people are. The OP getting so wound up and angry is pathetically hilarious - he’s spent the entire time arguing and insulting anyone who disagrees, making him a textbook example of a grade-A mentally disturbed individual. He’s so far off the charts it’s genuinely entertaining… though I’m surprised he hasn’t been banned yet.

We were in Macro yesterday and there was this woman donning a face diaper who proceded to sneeze then remove the mask and wipe her muzzle with her bare hand..  then went on to touch several packages of frozen shrimp ..

so yes..  lack of thinking, decency, and a prime candidate for another one flew over the cukoo's nest !

I’ve just come back to Thailand for the first time in two years to see my father, and honestly, I’m in absolute disbelief. How on earth are people STILL wearing masks everywhere? And I mean everywhere. Out in the open sun, alone on motorbikes, in empty corridors, walking on the beach – you name it. The most illogical, pointless situations imaginable… yet the masks are still glued on like some national uniform.

I used to love the warmth, personality and vibrancy of this country. Thailand always had a strong identity – expressive, open, full of character. Now? It feels like the soul has been completely drained. It’s like everyone is hiding behind the same blank expressionless sheet of fabric. A faceless society. That’s honestly what it feels like.

And the worst part? It’s clear this isn’t going away. There’s no sign that this obsession will ever stop. People seem terrified to break from the habit, as if the mask has become a permanent part of Thai culture. How did something meant to be temporary turn into a bizarre long-term behavioural ritual?

Tourism numbers make total sense to me now. Why would people “flock” back to a country where you can’t even see anyone’s face? Where the atmosphere feels controlled, muted, and borderline dystopian? It’s not welcoming – it’s just depressing. This is not the Thailand people fell in love with.

I never imagined I’d say this, but coming back has been a real shock. It’s like returning to a place you once knew only to find it’s been replaced by some strange masked-version of itself. Atmosphere stinks of covid paranoia - nobody give me this pm25 bull<deleted> either - there is sod all pm25 inside 7-11

Wearing a mask is just common sense. Keeps pollution out of your lungs, keeps you from other peoples germs, especially in shops, and on the subway, or bus.   I haven't had a cold or flu in 6 years since I started wearing a mask, there's no way I'll take it off when I'm out in public.

Out last evening, Bang Saray restaurant and bars - no masks there.

I was in Jomtien Immigration last week, maybe one or two staff with masks, perhaps they had colds and didn't want to spread their germs.

I rarely see anyone masked up these days.

My experience exactly.  I see them now and then, mostly to deal with pollution and/or very crowded subway cars.  Certainly these days maskless is the big majority.

How do you identify sheeple behavior?

If this sounds familiar you might want to ask yourself, “Am I a sheeple?” In case that's a new word for you, sheeple are people who act like sheep. They're most comfortable when following other people's rules of “acceptable” behavior (what to wear, what to think, etc.).

Spending your whole life hiding your basic human emotions  behind some filthy muzzle like a mutinous dog because you are scared of a little bit oogie boogie flu - you are sub-human as far as I am concerned. To qualify as an actual human you need to show your face in public. What a pitiful man you are,

Yep and this perturbingly irrational behaviour still permeates Thailand today - total cowards and freaks in this country. No wonder tourists are turning their back on Thailand, no sane individual wants to be around these pathetic clowns.
