I Can’t Believe Thailand Is STILL Obsessed With Masks

No.  No they weren’t.  And countless BTS photos from before Covid prove this.

Why do you people keep repeating the same lie?

Without a date, month & year, your photo proves nothing.  Especially in your photos, as I don't remember the platforms being that crowded pre 2019, and also notice, nobody wearing cooler weather clothing, so not taken during smog season either.

Suspect more current photos, during rainy season, and defeats your whole spin.

I remember long before scamdemic, folks walking around with masks, and thought that quite strange, until I realized how bad the air is here during smog season.

Or simply walking street level in Bangkok or any congested metro.  Mask wearing was common in downtown Udon Thani, and we left there in 2017.  Usually having facial hair, wearing one myself would have been pointless back then.

Granted, not seen as much as it is today, but far from uncommon to see people wearing masks year round, and especially during smog season.

Just another Thai bashing thread, though showing the locals living here, 24/7/365 days, have more common sense than trolls :coffee1:

I teach young students English and some have become addicted to wearing them, even though I try to explain to them that facial expressions are a key part of communication. Adam Carolla has described this phenomenon as 'crate training', the same way dogs can be comforted by being locked up in a crate -- but only if they get 'crate trained' as a pup. It's one of his many excellent analogies.

It is considered good manners here to wear a mask if you have a cold. This is to not get other people sick. There is nothing sinister going on and it shows a far better attitude than claiming the personal freedom to infect others.

I never said how effective they are or are not. I gave a reason that some wear them and it started long before covid.  Maybe you haven't been around long enough to know that, or feel you're too entitled to be bothered by what others do

Tonnes of videos online that show Thais didn't wear muzzles before 2020 - just accept they are a bunch of brainwashed clowns and you don't live in Land of Smiles

I think it is you that doesn't live here and is brainwashed, making a big scene on here over folk wearing masks.

Do you get the same bad feeling when confronted by blokes with beards, hats, glasses, or even wigs....?  🤫

Yep and that is tragic. The less analytically minded folk are seemingly incapable of grasping the human cost of living in a faceless society - even when I cite studies that clear demonstrate the harmful psychological cost of masking, particularly for children - they just ignore it and try and gaslight me into thinking it has always been like this, even though I know full well it hasn't

Yep people can't handle the truth. Even if they did work, then who cares anyway. If you get a little bit of flu once a year it's no big deal. Thais, other Asians and many expats here are just pathetic soft boys and girls. Utterly spineless people.

Many Thais live in multi generational homes, with elderly grandparents, who may be vulnerable to flus and respiration diseases.   One good thing about the scamdemic, it did educate many to the transmission of viral & bacterial diseases.

So that's a good, and the masks may provide some protection to the elderly.   Though minimal but some may save a life.

Personal choice, why do you care, except the obvious, spreading the hate.

It is very well documented that Japanese people are among the most anxious, isolated and depressed in the world.

I asked what mental illness exists in Japan. As I never heard of such a thing. Is there more mental illness there than anywhere else, or are you basing your theory on the number of folk there that wear a mask, so must be nuts....?  🤔

Unclear what the causality relationship is here. Which came first, the mask-wearing or the mental illness?

I’ve just come back to Thailand for the first time in two years to see my father, and honestly, I’m in absolute disbelief. How on earth are people STILL wearing masks everywhere? And I mean everywhere. Out in the open sun, alone on motorbikes, in empty corridors, walking on the beach – you name it. The most illogical, pointless situations imaginable… yet the masks are still glued on like some national uniform.

I used to love the warmth, personality and vibrancy of this country. Thailand always had a strong identity – expressive, open, full of character. Now? It feels like the soul has been completely drained. It’s like everyone is hiding behind the same blank expressionless sheet of fabric. A faceless society. That’s honestly what it feels like.

And the worst part? It’s clear this isn’t going away. There’s no sign that this obsession will ever stop. People seem terrified to break from the habit, as if the mask has become a permanent part of Thai culture. How did something meant to be temporary turn into a bizarre long-term behavioural ritual?

Tourism numbers make total sense to me now. Why would people “flock” back to a country where you can’t even see anyone’s face? Where the atmosphere feels controlled, muted, and borderline dystopian? It’s not welcoming – it’s just depressing. This is not the Thailand people fell in love with.

I never imagined I’d say this, but coming back has been a real shock. It’s like returning to a place you once knew only to find it’s been replaced by some strange masked-version of itself. Atmosphere stinks of covid paranoia - nobody give me this pm25 bull<deleted> either - there is sod all pm25 inside 7-11

I encourage you to make the world a better place and wear a mask.   No one wants to see you.

I may have ruined that with a terrilbe 3rd date yesterday though.

If I do bring Phuket girl for consolation sex in a few days, I: will get her checked out first, point well made. Lol.

Jeez, what total ignorance!  Mustard gas is absorbed through the skin!

A 'real' N95 mask can stop 98% of airborne pathogens escaping into the air (according to University of Maryland).  You understand?  People wear masks not only to avoid being infected by airborne pathogens, but also to stop spreading their own cough/cold/flu/covid germs.

I appreciate people who have a cold etc wearing masks to protect me from their germs.  They are demonstrating common sense.

People also wear simple masks to protect themselves from larger airborne particles (soot, dust etc) when they are in cities, riding a motorbike etc.  That's also common sense.

So I really don't understand the attitude of 'some' foreigners towards others who wear masks.  Seems to be based on ignorance....

Had all you mask nazis not enthusiastically backed every single Covid restriction, mandate, etc we wouldn’t be mocking you now.

You should have to disclose your lung problems in every pro-Covid-regulation post you make so we can laugh at you.

I think I've worked this out. Your dad dumped your mum and now lives with a Thai girl here. That is why you have this hatred for Thailand and its people. You've picked on the mask thing for some unknown reason as they are hardly very widespread. But I understand, you need to vent against the rejection you feel and Thailand is the obvious target for your angst. If you hadn't seen someone with a mask you would have picked another irrelevant subject.

Your posts are nothing more than baseless hatred.

Ah, wait, I think your dad's girlfriend wears a mask when you're around - bingo!! I bet that's it. Am I right?

Sigmund Freud you are not. You couldn't be more wrong. I actually used to enjoy coming to Thailand before half the populace became irreversibly brainwashed by irrational covid scaremongering. I abhor the presence of masks in any society, as mentioned, they create a miserable atmosphere - making society feel like one big mental asylum. It is just unfortunate that these hideous monstrosities are more prevalent in Thailand than nearly every other country on earth. For reasons none of us fully understand, a significant chunk of the Thai population seem incapable of living without a mask - many sit there all day in the boiling sun without ever taking it off. Anyone with even a modicum of humanity and common sense realizes how depressing and insane this brainless obsession with muzzles is. Many of you wrinkly old sexpats live in cuckoo land and have <deleted> for brains so don't know your arse from your elbow, so of course you empty-headed cockwombles see nothing wrong with it.

I think the best thing we can do is the natural reaction to the idiocy. Just make fun of them and hopefully it makes think the ones who's not totally lost

I agree, and that's quite easy to do in Europe as the amount of mask idiots left is negligible.

I think the OP is massively exaggerating the number of mask wearers, but I don't know why.

For example, in yesterday's crowd of over 20,000 football supporters at the Supachalasai National Stadium I could see just a few masks. I wasn't there but there is lots of TV footage available.

Typical crowd screenshot ...a couple of masks in this pic

Yep, he just hates Thailand and Thais as his dad left his mum for a Thai girl and maybe she wears a mask when he is around.

It is a tiny percentage of people who wear them, tiny.
