Thais can be judgmental like that.

The only real incident I've experienced was when I went to the AMphur office in CM city to get my pink card (i'm a Thai Permanent Resident).

There was a queue (total about 4 people), It was my turn to speak to the reeptionist and show my documents. As I started to speak a hi-lo overdressed 30s Thai woman pushed me aside and told the receptionist 'Thai people come first' (I understood every word). The receptionist ignored her and continued to speak to me and then told the woman to join the queue. She abused the receptionist and called her timid assistant and told her to join the queue.

Perhaps 2 minutes later the supervisor spoke to 3 staff members of the hi-so lady to tell them to stop moving chairs across the room to set up a separate seating/waiting area for the hi-so lady.

Supervisor also got abused, she called the senior cop on duty who ordered them to reyurn the chairs to the main seating area and then told the hi-so lady to it in the main area. She was furious.

Perhaps 20 minutes later they sared to call waiting Thai folks to come to th camera area. Hi-so lady decided she was next. The snr. cop noticed and told her to sit down and also told the staff to call her at the end of the list. When they called my name she objeted 'Thai people come first'. She was ignored.

She called her lawyer who arrived after her photo had been taken.

Cop spoke to her lawyer (everybody could hear) and told hime to bring her to the police station at 5.00 pm that day.

Thais can be judgmental like that.

Self-made businessman, who sold his internet start-up to a multinational for about 13 million, and his Soi 6 three-holer.

Thai's haven't a bloody clue.

Talking from personal experience?

I do wonder if there is unequal treatment with White/Thai versus Black/Thai.

Thai's are very status sensitive and don't regard Africa very well so I'm quite sure the black/Thai would bomb here pretty hard.

that's terrible these types are in Chiang Mai. It's really not the same city as it used to be.

One of the things I loved about the northern Thailand are the salt of the earth wholesome people who are making do with what they have a making the best out of life regardless of the odds.

It's hard to know how many of those people are transplants from Bangkok but it's possible she was one of them. Sadly as Chiang Mai has developed it's now become more accessible to these other types of people so they're moving here and changing the culture

They want to look like white asian, not like a farang.

Except they all buy farang noses.

He should get some respect for tying to get his kid a good education.

I disagree, it is way better to have conversations with them. Will get a lot more respect that way.

I frequently pick up my Thai step-grandson  (white) from school and get nothing but smiles and positive remarks from all the other, mostly, Mums.

I gotta echo what couple others have noted:  My experience is the Mom sets the standard.  If she is respected and her family is respected no child or farang husband will ever have an issue.  How they see Mom is how they will see Dad and the kids.

But, as with all things:  YMMV

Are you one of these "fellow parents" with a disgusted look on your face?

If so, can you take a selfie in full disgusted mode and post here?

Thanks in advance.

My daughter is mixed race, looks western, speaks Thai and of course is a Thai national. She is now at University here (second year), having gone through school here (private school yes, but far from an "elite" establishment - they employed me as a teacher after all!). Here is Chiang Rai, about as far from Bangkok as you can get.

She didn't suffer any racism or name calling from her friends. She had a strong circle of Thai friends, with whom she remains close, nice youngsters, but not plaster saints; I taught them and she, and they, could be the bane of my life, albeit in a nice way! Where there were problems they tended to be from the teachers - older ones, the younger ones were much more open. One in particular (I never really worked  out what subject she taught, she seemed to concentrate on making sure that every child could wai correctly in a variety of circumstances) was a real pain, she told Lucy she had to change her name to a Thai name, and made her dye her (auburn) hair black so she would be "more Thai". I was furious about that, spoke to the Director, and the school ended up paying for a proper (expensive) ladies hairdresser to do a restoration job. When she was 16 she decided she wanted to join the School Cadet force, but was refused because she was mixed race. Can't say I was too upset about that!

There is the occasional problem with "authority": problems renewing her ID card and getting a driving license - low level beaurocracy sometimes can't cope with an English name and a white face! Not serious, just niggling. Lucy sometimes gets a little exasperated by it. No problems at University at all, but then they have numbers of  foreign students and staff.

I would advise you to try and make sure that your child has as wide a circle of Thai friends as possible. Thais seem to make strong friendships, and Lucy's seem to have been pretty robust, siding with and laughing with rather than at her as they navigate and experience the occasional problem.

In summary, younger generation fine, any problems tend to be from the older generation, bit like everywhere I suppose!

Just read all that and was about post, word for word, your last sentence.
