Student Visa At Risk of Rejection Because of Bank Documents

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I hope someone can help me. I decided in October to study Thai at a well-respected and legitimate language school in Bangkok. And yes, I really want to learn Thai! I followed through on the process with them. I recently applied for a student visa with all supporting documentation. For proof of finances I submitted a verification letter from my US bank listing my current bank balance which is well in excess of any funds needed for the three month course, tuition and all other fees. I have used these letters previously to obtain tourist visas without issue. It lists my balance as of X date, my name, address, account number and date opened. My name matches the name on my ID.

I applied at the Embassy in Tokyo because that is where i currently am. I got a request for more documents stating they wanted 3 months of bank statements. I have never been asked for these and they are listed as one possible supporting document for sufficient resources along with sponsorship letter, etc. Those statements will show sufficient money in the account but the balance on official closing days fell below the requirements because I did not know I needed keep that much money in that account untouched for 3 months prior to my application, indeed for some of those months I did not even realize I wanted to take a Thai course.

I am struggling to see what I can do here. I have the funds right now to take the course and can easily show that. But I can see a rejection saying my closing balance on X date fell below the requirements 2 or 3 months ago. Any advice or suggestions?

Thanks.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but. .. ...

Unless you're Japanese or live/work there as a foreigner I doubt you could have picked a worse Thai consulate in Southeast Asia to apply for any visa through.

The ones in Japan are no nonsense, 100% above board, tick all the boxes, get the visa, don't tick all the boxes,  don't get the visa.

I have no idea who told you to go there to apply but I am reasonably sure your school did not tell you to..

You'll either get the visa or you won't it'll only go one of two ways.

Best of luck with it..

Sorry to hear about your predicament. Why not apply for the student visa through your language school when you're already in Thailand? If it is a well-established school as you say, their immigration contact person should be able to help you out.

Look at that email from the embassy once more carefully. Does it really say that a specific minimum amount must have been there for the entire three months?

Usually, the requirement for statements for a certain number of months serves to exclude the possibility that the account was opened shortly before the the visa application, with the intention to close it again soon after receiving the visa.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place

@Maestro brought up a good point.

As a rule consulates require 3 months of bank statements, but the required funds usually only have too be in the account when you apply.

All you can do is resend them 3 months of bank statements and hope for the best. It'll either get approved or rejected, there's no middle ground..

You could get a tourist visa and extend 30 days in country and study Thai.

I believe the OP did not say that he wants to study Thai for only 30 days. This is what he wrote:

You need paperwork from a language school showing tuition paid.

Nothing to do with a study visa, money in the bank. Stop trolling.

That was my mistake. I meant to write 90.

The OP also did not say that he wants to study for only 90 days.

I misread that part 🙂
