7-11 cheese toasty query.

Featured Replies

I've read several times on AN about these and how good they are, so yesterday was my mission to buy a couple: one for my elderly neighbour for his lunch, and one for me as a long overdue tickoff from my (quite lame) bucket list.

I went to the largest branch in my area, yet was met by puzzled looks when I tried to order "cheese toasties".

I reworded it as best I could, "hot cheese sandwich", "cheese/bread", etc, but the puzzled looks kept coming back at me.

I looked around desperately for a poster, or advert displaying anything, but there was nothing.

So, are these only available from certain branches?

Or, do you pick one out of the fridge, then ask them to microwave them? I didn't see any kind of toasting machine behind the counter, so microwaving wouldn't make it a "toasty" at all.

The closest I found in the fridge were these:

They're pre-toasted and just need to be heated up in their microwave. Edit: Guess they do have a toaster!

Considering there are at least 500000 million tik tokers and insta aholes making money out of.."hey look best cheese toastie at 2am" ...I would say they must be good

Microwave is soggy and awful - use a Toaster (sandwich maker) then you are eating them properly and not degraded mush

Not correct! - they need to be toasted properly - microwave turns them to mush

They do not microwave them ever!! They use a toastie maker. Most shops have 3 or 4 of these going all day.

True. I was just telling him how they come and that 7-11 has their microwave. You can bring them home of course.

Okay, never noticed that as I only get a few things that go into their microwave.

Yes they toast them in a sandwich toaster as pictured above.

Try a cheese egg beano.

Toast a slice of bread butter it then melt cheese on it under a grill (Red Leicester or Cheddar preferably) pile baked beans on it and 1 or 2 fried eggs on top of that.

Nectar from the gods.

I think you might need a coffee or a RedBull while you wait for your toasty. You are not fully awake.

Check out how its made.

I rarely go into 7-11. Occasionally for the pre-made Pad Krapow and a 0% Ice Tea and don't eat the toasted cheesy things, so I wasn't aware. I saw those toasty sandwiches looking pre-toasted so I thought 7-11 would just heat them up. Was just trying to help, but others here know more about them so it's good for him you took over.

Just ask them for "San-Witt Hemm Cheet". That will get you what you want. They have about 25 or 30 different toasty sandwiches now. And a lot of variations of the original ham cheese. Many are awful with cream and weird mystery meat fillings. But you just want the original one that says "ham and cheese sandwich". No double cheese, etc.

You pay for it at the counter and then you wait about two minutes while they toast it for you. They will refer to it as "wabe" because nobody ever taught them the word toasty so they use the Thai word for microwave. But when they say that what they're really asking you is if you want it toasted or not: "wabe mai". Say yes. And don't worry, they'll never put it in the microwave when they ask that.

If you go in the evening, they're often sold out because that's the most popular version. Maybe that's why you didn't strike gold. Go earlier in the day or go really late at night after they restock them. They normally get deliveries in the late evening. By 1-2 am they normally have every variety of toasty sandwich back in stock.

FW, I make my grill cheese sandwiches at home the old fashioned way with a skillet and some butter. But any 7/11 I have been in from a local Thai one to a tourist filled one the biggest sellers are the toasties. You can smell them and you can see them being prepared, its as much a part of 7/11 as the bing bong on entering and exiting.

10 years ago when still picking up my twins from school there were two smells in the car that brought big smiles. Mu Ping and 7/11 toasties.

So why comment ?

The topic and Marin's reply reminds me that a toasted cheese sandwich is one thing I haven't turned my daughter here onto yet, either here or when we visited Texas the last couple of years. I'm always giving her healthy dishes to eat as she gets too much crap when she stays with her mom or visits grandma. A toasted cheese isn't that bad, so it's on the menu soon.

Yes not great, but very convenient and tasty! Having so many 7-11s is one of the joys of life here.

Thanks everyone. Who would have thought such a subject would get such a response.

The 7-11 that I visited (soi Arunotai) had the various sandwiches, hence the photo I took, but not the toasting machines.

I'll just have to find a branch that has both so I can then finally see what all the fuss is about.

The food was always a big attraction for me to come to Thailand, but I would never have guessed cheese toasties were such a part of the culture here.

At least for so many expats.

Unless of course it's the Thais that lap them up too?

There is no fuss. It is quick and easy food. The large collection of drinks is great. If you enjoy airline food you will enjoy the toasties.

Rubbish. Toasted sandwiches are heated in a double sided sandwich toaster.

Also, just to clarify.

I do have all the ingredients and machinery to make my own cheese toasties at home, but as I was just popping out for milk, I asked my neighbour and he needed some lunch.

Finding good (and affordable) bread, cheese and butter/margerine/spread seems to be a fine art here, so these convenient toasties could be a good answer, although I would prefer to make my own.

EVERY 7/11 I have ever been to in Thailand, has two or three microwaves, for the burgers and rice/noodle dishes, and sandwich toasters for...................you guessed it, toasting sandwiches.

Not the best in the world, but for a quid, who cares?

Guess I'll have to go back in there and look behind the counter again.....

But you've never had one of those 7-11 toasties, Harrisfan. You told me they are way out of your budget.

You can buy bread and tinned tuna. Far more healthy than packaged toasties. They are full of preservatives.
