Protecting My Garden From Snakes

Any suggestions on how to keep snakes from a garden? Got 2 small dogs that are really inquisitive.Its ok to keep an eye on them but if they see a snake,im concerned incase they get bit.Is it possible to buy antivenom from a vet to keep at home? and also are there any snake repellents available?I want my dogs to enjoy the garden safely without the worry of the worst happening.

they work indeed. we used them in Africa around the house because the land was too big. the roof overhang prevented that they were dissolved by the rain. others who wanted to protect their land because they had children playing outside wrapped the mothballs in fabric, hanging them suspended slightly above ground from the fence to make them last longer.

thx for ur imput....wasnt so lucky for my gf...her dog died 3 years ago due to a snake in the garden and her mum lost a dog a couple of months ago due to a snake in the garden.Thats why i need some feedback on an antivenom or a deterant.

Why worry???.....if u paid 39,000 baht for a pedigree dog and it was treated as part of the family,then u might think differently about it.Anyway...my question was about deterants and antivenoms....not who gets it

I've heard similar things and also about citrus trees. However the other day we found a snake in one of our lime trees, so I'm not so sure now.

The Citrus thing is an old wives tale. I've seen snakes hiding in lemongrass more than once. The Kids went for a trip with school on friday, a walk in the Hills. We had a tick list of items needed, one was a lemon for each kid to keep snakes away. What utter bullSh*t.

If the Dogs are active then your unlikely to get snakes settling anywhere near, but there's nothing to stop a snake popping in as it passes by.

If you can afford to support another Dog get a soi dog that has some 'Thai ridgeback' in its makeup. It'll find the snake before your pedigree does. next best thing to a mongoose ;-)

It does -- not a 100%, but will definitely decrease snake presence. Not only lemongrass, actual lemon trees and kaffir lime will also work. Anything citrus-y and the more the better.

someone recommended sprinkling boon kao in front of gates or other openings of property it is supposed to make the snake uncomfortable if the powder gets on her skin. but best i think is to make everything shut and keep mice and frogs away...

I've seen mice so would expect something to eat them. Anyway as it's cool season I've been gathering larger dead leaves and old sticks and burning them off, IMO it is better the remove the ground cover that snake might prefer and move on somewhere else.

I agree that keeping the garden clear of dead leaves etc. is likely to help, but am suprised that with 4 acres of land you've seen no snakes! I've only got 1 rai, but have seen MANY tree and rat snakes. (I've got lots of trees though)

As far as I can see, snakes are everywhere and I just pray that the deadly ones keep away from my dogs!

I think it's unlikely there's any 'sure-fire' way to repel them. If there was, the Thais would use it to protect themselves.

Oh, and by the way, can I just say that anyone who thinks that only a 'financially valuable' dog is worth protecting, should not be on this forum. That applies even more so to someone who thinks it's a happy outcome for a dog to die from a snake bite on the dubious basis that the snake might have got you otherwise! Not many people go romping around the way dogs do!

i think walling your property in with sufficient high enough wall, cutting all grass etc short inside and also outside the wall, closing all gaps, esp at doors and gates, making sure no mice or frogs around and also cut off tree branches hanging over your wall will help a lot. if you got debris, burn it in heaps outside your property, will also chase away snakes.

The 4 Rai (little bit over an acre) is within a build up area but outside of Pattaya City, it has an goverment access road running through the middle and is just waiting for someone to build on it. We are quite lucky to have the open space compared to some. So I'm not surprised there are not many snakes here, I saw a dead one near my office about 18 months ago. Up country our land is on the village edge with productive rual land around it, here I have seen rat snakes and thin green ones zipping around. A friend nearby has a mouse problem that attracts the odd cobra to his land/house. Has he will not remove the attractive smell of rodents and trim the jungle in the 'garden' he will have to tread careful at night and risk an incident with one of his dogs or child.

We have a shop in pattaya called True value on the shelves they have products that you spray to keep snakes off your property, I think it comes from Australia.

not knowing your location I don't know if there is a True value depot near to were you live.

I have dogs and I still have snakes in the garden, a big green <deleted>#@er that seems to spend a lot of time in my trees. I am not so worried about the dogs being bitten but I have a 3 year old Son and kids like to explore.

I think this citrus tree and lemon grass thing is complete BS, there may well be things that snakes do not like that occur naturally, shotguns for example but I don't think lemon grass is it.

Very possible that there's confusion here between lemongrass for cooking and another that looks similar but isn't for cooking and is an effective mosquito deterrent - therefore maybe also effective to some extent to deter snakes.

Sorry, can't remember the thai name for this variety, but a good garden centre will have it. The leaves tend to be noticeably coarser and rougher to the touch compared to the cooking one - and the citronella-type smell is much more pungent.

It's called Ta Krai Hom

Taller and coarser than the eating variety.

If anybody sees any in Chiang Mai for sale please let me know as the clump I planted seems to have been ingested in the spread of bamboo clumps.

Its meant to keep away mosquitoes, not sure about snakes.

my neighbour swears by Salae Pang Porn which is prickly and has reddish markings on the leaves, grows into big bush as a snake deterrent.
