Senator Edward Kennedy, 77, dies

_45343195_breaking_226x170.gifVeteran US Senator Edward Kennedy, the brother of ex-President John F Kennedy, has died aged 77 after a long battle with cancer, US media say.

The Democratic Massachusetts senator was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour in May last year.

He became a member of the Senate in 1962 to replace his brother when he resigned to become president, and was re-elected seven times.

He has been an active supporter of current President Barack Obama.

RIP, Teddy. Its a shame he didn't live to see his life work fully realized, health care access for all Americans. Lots of people don't like Teddy, please show some respect at this time to this truly great American.

His critics will have the rest of their lives to spit on his grave and carp about Chappaquiddick , give him a week of consideration for the good things he did accomplish. I guess this is the end of the Kennedys, he has passed the baton.

In his younger days:

Sick, sick, sick.

As expected.

Lost in Los

never agreed with him on anything

You are against civil rights? You are against peace in Ireland? You are against sick people getting health care? You are against voting rights? I doubt you even know his record. I suggest you watch the slide show. I can't imagine anyone disagreeing with Teddy 100 percent if they knew the truth.

Peace in Ireland?

The man who personally authored legislation to prevent anyone born in the United Kingdom of Scotland, England, Wales but NOT Northern Ireland from ever competing in the US Green Card lottery? This because he opposed the Unionists in favour of... what was the opposition called again?

Well done Ted.

R.I.P.

(Don't spin too much willya Teddy?)

Actually, there was no dynasty.

JFK was president. He was assassinated before he could accomplish very much, his successor LBJ did much more.

Bobby Kennedy would have likely been president, but assassinated before he had the chance.

Teddy basically assassinated his own chances to be president at Martha's Vineyard island.

Teddy however turned out to be the most important Kennedy, contrary to everyone's expectations.

I loved Teddy. I honor him. He was more important than most presidents and he will go down in history as one of the greatest senators ever. The world is a much better place because he lived.

How is this Thailand related?

It isn't directly except in the sense that Thailand is in the world and the death of a globally famous leader of any nationality is of interest to people in Thailand. Today's front page:

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2009/08/26...es_30110743.php

I think this should be about respect and a tribute to a great man.

Come on JT, almost anything can then be posted on TV "because Thailand is in the world". I think 99% of Thais have never heard of the guy, much less care he is dead. I just see discussion about IRA related stuff.

The mods continually close topics which are not LOS related.

edit: like this one: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Japan-t292393.html

I felt it had more merit to continue, but who am I to question mods? Right?

This is up to the mods and is really none of our business. However I disagree about the name recognition: Thais know the name KENNEDY. The entire world knows the name. The Bangkok newspapers think it is important enough for page one as well. Just the same as everywhere else in the world. Give the Thais some credit, at least a little, OK?

This story is not just anything, what a silly argument. So you think I would argue that a cat being run over in Madrid is of interest to people in Thailand? BTW, read what I said more closely, I agree it is not Thai related; however it is clearly of INTEREST to people IN Thailand. Not the same thing.

The English language newspapers in Bangkok which have small circulation of mostly farang have, that's to be expected. We'll see if Thai Rath puts it on their front page or not.

"Hi Teddy, do you remember me? It's Mary Jo. When you get a chance, can we have a little chat?"

Yes, we all remember Chappaquiddick and Mary Jo, Ted was extremely lucky to be a member of the Kennedy clan otherwise he would have received a severe sentence, nevertheless as a result of this incident he must no doubt have suffered emotionally for the rest of his life, now he can RIP, or can he ? ... since, we don't know what happens when we cross the river Jordan, maybe Mary Jo (amongst others) will be there to meet him as he enters the golden gates and she may indeed have something to say to him.

Actually that isn't true. Lots of Thais read the English newspapers here. I don't know why but I have read that. Maybe for the employment ads?

That said, here in Thailand and frankly in the US as well, the death of Michael Jackson was a bigger story. Some people's fame transcends nationality, yes?

For the record, I don't give a fig whether this thread stays open or not. I didn't open it. Whatever happens, Teddy is still dead, and the Teddy haters are not ...

You're stretching it, dude. And what does this have to do with this forum category?

Is it fun?

Is it entertainment?

Or is it about expat life?

When I come to ThaiVisa, I don't want to read the world news. There are better and more complete places to go for that. I want to read something that will relate in some way to my living here in Thailand. The late Senator has nothing to do with Thailand or my life here. Neither anyone else's on this forum. :D

I've had mods close my threads for topics much closer to life in Thailand than this. I vote for :)

I personally disagree with his views and actions which created the near-socialist country called Massachusetts. Worked there for a couple of summers and found the welfare-state nearly unbearable. After state, county, and city income taxes, had nearly nothing left to take to college for my tuition in the fall.

Unfortunately the late senator was the epitome of pork-barrel politics which put his own constituency and personal power/influence way ahead of national interests--similar to John Goodman's character in "Evan Almighty," the fat-cat Senator Long.

I can certainly see why certain segments of those who resided in his state and directly benefited from his policies loved the guy and voted for him. However, if you were a middle class worker, it was on your back that they enjoyed those benefits.

Farewell to the Lion of the Senate, and the senior Senator from my home state. His elder sister, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, only passed away two weeks ago. Both contributed positively to Massachusetts, the U.S.A. and to the World.

Here, here. I went to college in the Bay State so had the opportunity to vote for Senator Teddy. I have always loved the Kennedys, a family of great patriots who have always cared about those left out of the American dream. Goodbye Camelot.
