PM Plays Down Speculation of New Premiere Candidates

The prime minister is not concerned about recent speculations in which a number of politicians have been tipped for the premiership.

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva commented on the rumors that have circulated recently naming a number of politicians who have reportedly been tipped for the premiership, saying it is normal that people would speculate on the topic of who his successor will be. Abhisit said that he is not concerned about whether the government or the prime minister would be changed.

When asked about the Democrat Party's dissolution case, the prime minister responded by saying that the party will respect the court's decision and that the legal team has done their best.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister's Office Minister, Ong-art Klampaiboon has insisted that the topic of a new prime minister has never been discussed within the Democrat Party or at Cabinet meetings because everyone still has confidence in Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Democrat Party Spokesperson Buranat Samutharak also reaffirmed that speculations that there has been an attempt to install Deputy Prime Minister in charge of the national security Suthep Thaugsuban as the prime minister were just that--- speculation. Buranat also added that Abhisit's performance has allowed the country to regain the international community's confidence.

At the same time, Spokesperson for the Democrat Party Leader, Thepthai Senpong said he believes that the endorsement of President of the Chart Thai Pattana Chief Adviser Sanan Kajornprasart for the premiership by MP Jatuporn Promphan, who is also a red-shirt leader, was merely an attempt to create a rift within the coalition government.

A member of the Democrat Party Executive Committee, Satit Pitutacha pointed out that if for some reason Ahbisit can no longer retain the prime minister position, the party will select another capable candidate in accordance with the Charter.

Political Motive Unconfirmed for Bangkok Blasts

Police are confident that four recent bomb blasts in Bangkok were carried out by the same group. Investigators are still unclear if the attacks were politically motivated.

National police chief Police General Wichian Podposri spoke today of the progress being made into four bomb attacks in Bangkok recently.

Wichian disclosed that in a report handed to him by Police General Panupong Singhara Na Ayuthaya, explosive devices detonated at Nang Loeng Royal Turf Club, the Public Health Ministry, Santirat School and The Mall Ngam Wong Wan had similar characteristics.

Based on the revelation, police are confident the perpetrators of all the four attacks are from the same group. But they have been unable to establish whether or not the blasts were politically motivated.

An anonymous good Samaritan has donated 100,000 baht as reward money for anyone who can contribute useful information about the attacks.

Wichian this morning personally reported progress of investigations to Deputy Prime Minister for national security Suthep Thaugsuban.

Department of Special Investigation Director General Tharit Pengdit later said that the unrest in the capital coincided with intelligence reports his department had received about attacks being planned by anti-government zealots.
