Protecting Gear

As I now have ordere a bit more serious bike and will be making longer tours in Thailand I thought it will be a good idea to buy some cloths to protect myself against encounters with the road-surface or other unpleasant things.

So as I was in BKK yesterday anyway I did visit Paddock (and yeah what is the older Chinese lady unfriendly) and had a look around. There are some things I do not understand.

First of all the price difference of type of jackets that look the same to me. Chinese copies? I see example "Shoei" jackets from different manufactures.

Then the different kind of jackets. In Europe it would be a simple choice for me ... full leather. But that will be bloody hot here. So you see the "cool" mash jackets with protecting pad's in it. I think those protecting pas's are very uncomfortable (and at your back probably sweaty als). And it's all polyster which will burn when sliding over the tarmac. It looks nice and it will not be bloody hot but I have the feeling that it actually also does not protect so much.

I saw a nice combi of mash-polyster and leather (Speedi or something like that), with a winter-inner part that can be taken out (and probably will never be used here in Thailand).

So what are your idea's about jackets for on the bike?

I am even condidering just to buy a normal "fashion" leather jacket (although I just show a "leather" jacket at Central that was made of polyster an looks like leather and it was from a European brand name).

Might also have to upgrade my helmet as that Real (open-face) helmet that I have now is nice for city ride but graps a lot of wind and dust.

changnoi.. you do not say how big you are. weight , height etc. Being a fat bastard i have big problems finding kit here BUT with Paddock i found the best thing to do is just wander around looking and telling the guy or gal trialling you that your just looking. Also paddock have a discount corner (its over to the right, like a walk in cupboard) where you can find some ok stuff. I did manage to find a nice discountedperforated leather jacket (its actually cooler than my mesh) which was an ok price (still expensive at 9,999baht)

But if you are smaller (normal) size then there are many places to choose from (and many are MUCH friendlier than paddock)

check out mocyc.com... there are several shops on there.. ninja250 shop, blacksteed, etc

Have fun looking.. :D

If its a cbr250 you ordered. I believe you should get a hjc helmet in the deal (made in vietnam). but if you do not then REAL make some decent full face helmets as well. also the shops above sell helmets..

HJC is making helmets in Vietnam now? My HJC was made in South Korea...

Tony.. thats what it said on the label of the one i saw.. it was a more basic style than HJC are famous for.

for what its worth.. my Thai bought HJC cl-max was made in China. my US sourced AC12 is made in Korea.

Many of the shops on mocyc selling copies of dainese, alpinestar and other famous brands. Most easy to see if its a copy or not is the price as you would not get a original dainese mesh jacket for around ~3000 baht. Quality doesnt seem so bad but in a crash i think i wouldn't trust it? Anybody have experience with those copied gear? Once i bought copied alpinestars gloves, they were useless cause the seams cut my hands

chiangnoi.. mine is a Komine. But i believe that Blacksteed do a RST perforated leather jacket.

here http://www.blackstee...t&l=2&cid=38019

more info here http://www.rst-moto....leather_jacket/

Blacksteeds sister company N2s engineering are the official Thailand importer for RST in Thailand.

hope that helps. Allan

ps my Komine is more perforated than that one, and its not a sports jacket.

Thanks that gives me some direction to look for.

At Paddock they had a nice leather jacket that was partly perforated but prices at 19000thb (from 28.000thb)!

Bloody hell that is twice the price as in Europe ...so maybe I will just buy it in Europe when I am there in a few months.

Where as a tourist I get a 15% VAT refund.

What is it with paddcok? they are even rude to the locals! i was told they sell a brand of jacket called Need for Speed - or something similar. Anybody any experience of this brand?

Never heard for the Need for Speed ... seems a Chinese copy name.

Hahaha they are not rude ... ther are just chinese ... OK they are rude!

Well especially the older lady, there is a young guy working who is taking is work & bizz serious.

Next time will check-out "Dirt shop" ... at least they have a very cute & cleaver sales lady (probably the co-owner).

What shops would be good for looking for protecting gear? Panda Rider ?

well it's a good shop.. but you will need a well filled wallet to get anything. certainly better filled than mine (but that aint hard) :D

ninja250 shop just got bigger. and i like blacksteed for their honesty. i asked if a product was a copy and was told "sure at that price" it was only kneepads. the RST stuff is real :D

Good shops for protecting gear:

1. Paddock (unfriendly)

2. Panda Rider (expensive)

3. Ninja Shop

4. BlackSteed (honnest)

5. Dirt Bike Shop (Onnut)

I would not add Red Baron to that list but maybe others have another view on that.

There seems to be a shop "AP" but not sure where it is? Should be specialist in ER6N and that kind.

Where are Ninja Shop and BlackSteed located?

To find driving gear when you are a big person is not easy in thailand. I'm 187 cm and 110 kg, and to find driving gear was almost impossibel. Ended up in paddoc, the only thing they had that fitted was a speed-r hole suite in xxl, everything else was to small. Looks a little bit stuped driving around with a racing suite when you driving a chopper. Cost 15000 baht, and I think it was worth the money. It get a little bit hot in the dry-season, but its ok. Went on a long trip in the rainy-season (3500 km), and the only times I got stopped by the cops was when they wanted to have a look on the driving gear, never got asked for the license.

I'm thinking of buying a jacket in norway to take with next time, prices are same or lower, and easyer to find size, and also there are no copys in norway, so you know what you are getting.

Driving gear cost money, but it could save youre life, and you can't fit a price-tag on your life?

Sorry for my poor english

Hi, Chang Noi 1,

congrats on the Versys order, happy you came to that decision, think you'll love it.What colour??

I have a mesh jacket with plastic armour, back, elbow and shoulder(Teknic) fine and comfortable when your riding, and not expensive,(thanks Thaicbr!) don't reckon you would get nylon burn from it in a spill, but would need a new jacket after, a back protector that fits under it well too, (Knox Aegis), Kevlar Jeans with rubber knee protectors, (Sartso Killers)and Alpinestar gloves. What I would upgrade are the jeans, but probably just get strap-on knee protectors. Would not ride without good gloves for sure and now would feel naked and unprotected with anything less on when I'm riding. On the bike it all feels good and comfy. Think about importing or going shopping when you go home,if you cant find good stuff here, ( I hit Heine Gerrike before I came out this time) quality counts.

Happy trails,

PP

What about the Shark brand of helmets?

After seeing a new Evoline model was very impressed with the quality, awesome swiss army knife of a lid. Reportedly it was an extremely quiet helmet, and this from an owner who'd been riding with a full faced Real for the couple of years I've known him.

I ordered one in red ... maybe will change it later to yellow or have the tank also made red.

I have to find a someone who can re-model the seat for me (=lowering). Found Pui (AP Shop in BKK) but it would be easier to have it done in Pattaya.

I have not yet deceided what kind of jacket I will buy, will have to look a few shops in bkk next month. I would prefere a combination of leather and textile and with perforation (could shoot a few holes in it?).

Wow, you ride a chopper in full track leathers? That certainly must be a site to see!

15000 Baht for Speed-R leathers is a hell of a good price btw.

Are yours the same colors as mine?

Dec18thKawaTrackDayER6nRR1.jpg

Would love to see a picture of you on your bike in full leathers- should be a site to see!

Happy Trails!

Unfortunately protective gear is at a premium in Thailand and the savings which importers make as a result of the strong baht aren't passed on to consumers. I'm a happy camper though just returned from the UK with an Arai chaser helmet for the equivalent of 14,700 THB, Kevlar jeans for 4400 THB and Frank Thomas gloves thrown in for free. All of the bike shops in Newcastle were keen to do deals. I don't think the concept of the post Boxing day sales have taken off in Thailand

bought me some new gear today to bring with me next month. Ended up with one aron-ness jacket (5000 baht, not bad price), two denim driving pants (with protections), and one more jacket (the seller had gotten complains about this jacket being to cold to drive with in Norway, then maybe perfect for Thailand). 11000 baht for everything. So buy it home and bring it with.
