Afraid Of Americans?

Featured Replies

This ought to be a topic everyone will just love! :o

Americans are known to read headlines from other countries and be outraged or shocked and condemn that country as a "bad" place. They will say things like "Man, am I glad I don't live there."

Now, when I was in high school some really nice people came over to America on a student exchange program. All of them were from Europe and they admited during the school year that they were a little afraid to come here, because of what they read or saw on the TV.

So, I am curious. Do people outside of America read our headlines and say man am I glad I don't live there? I am sure they do. But I want to know the hows and whys.

Tell me why YOU are afraid of Americans.

Friendly Fire

:D :D  :o

Oh come on! Give me more than that! What do you mean by friendly fire? Too many guns in America? BTW, I do mean things that happen with the counrty. :D

Afraid of Americans? Not really...

Afraid of living in America? Well that's a different question all together, isn't it?

Afraid of living in America? Are you?

Well that's a different question all together, isn't it?

Americans are fine really but I'm a bit afraid of those Americans that are, erm, afraid...

They mostly reside in them there red states and vote for W B. They're comprised of soccer mom's and bbq dads whom live in a constant state of fear anyways.

Dubya's chief strategist -and all round ball breaker- Karl Rove figured it right: scare 'em, stupify 'em and therefor, keep them voting for the republican party (otherwise known as the "scare 'em and protect 'em" party). "Friendly fire" could also be defined by just voting for them :D

I'm afraid that's all I have to say on the matter :o

- Friendly Fire

- Open Racism

- Lack of social values

- Paranoia

- Hollywood and TV centric (some would call that lack of culture)

- Food

- Incuriosity of most people living there (even immigrants)

I am glad I don't live there anymore :D

Yes, it's a better place without you. :D

I'm not afraid of americans same as i'm not impressed, intimidated, led or jealous of them.

They are the same as everyone else in my book (below us Brits :o )

Is this thread one giant Troll or what? :o

I don't mind americans in general & have no fear of America or her people. I have had several very nice holidays there & found the people in general very friendly & helpful.

The ones who have travelled have a broader perspective IMO than the ones who stay on home ground. One time, a new yorker working in a bank asked a south african friend if he could drive there from the states & it think that sums up a lot of americans IMHO, they have no knowledge of the world outside of america & also no interest, which is fine but a bit of basic geography wouldn't go amiss :D I dont' think I would want to live in the states though purely because of the government. Too big brother for my liking :o

Boo, coming from the country that films you everywhere you go? The country that has tv trucks driving around checking if you have an unlicensed tv? The country of the now renamed Poll tax??

Actually, as an American, I find the broad generalizations that people make quite funny. It is a nation of almost 300 million people comprised of nearly every ethnic group and nationality in the world. No wonder there are racism problems. Racism is certainly rearing its ugly head in formerly homogenous Europe. How many countries have had close calls with rightist, antiimmigrant politicians coming into popularity?

I agree with Boon mee (AAGH!) definitely TROLL material here, just bound to inflame and antagonize.

note I did use the words "in general" quite a bit sbk. :o

I am not afraid of Americans but I am afraid of the country as a whole just as I would be afraid of a special needs child with a gun.

That said, it's China we should be starting to fear.

Mods - please close this thread before the Gent or B-Fly etc weigh in?

Krap khun krap... :o

Wow, did any of you even read my OP or was I really that vague? :o

I was speaking of news people. What conculsions could be made by America from it's news. As this would be the only way for people who have never been there to know anything about America.

I am not trolling and I am not looking for rude comments or opinions based on what one my have experienced with Americans outside of the USA. So, many westerners are so quick to place judgement on a place because of it's news(one of the worst aspects of any country). So, I choose America to see what we as westerers would think about this place based on it's news, I also choose America because I didn't want to offend anyone. I am an American so I choose America.

So, what would our news say about us to the rest of the world?

The heading Afraid of Americans is a David Bowie song I was just useing to lighten the mood. :D

Only if people want to be a$$holes instead of think about the question.

I guess I just have to have faith in the members of TV.

Is that wrong of me? :o
