Just Another Day On The Ranch, Crawford Style

Featured Replies

As one whom generally steers clear of these topics, I just couldn't resist this one :D

-Today Bush nominated Harriet Miers to the supreme court - She's a Texan lawyer and the president's former personal attorney (erm, no conflict there then;) She also has no previous experience as a judge btw- mai pen rai :o

From 1995 until 2000, she was chair of the Texas Lottery Commission (this should pre-qualify her;) She was also a partner in a Texas law firm for several years before being appointed white house counsel (iow's, fast tracked on Dubya's coat tails).

"Miers was leading the White House effort to help Bush choose a nominee to the Supreme Court, so naming her follows a move Bush made in 2000 when he tapped the man leading his search committee for a running mate- Dick Cheney"

Erm, is it just me or is Bush just trying to 'appear' supportive of women and minorities by such appointments/nominations? Or, is the plan cynically two fold: To appease possible democrat swing voters in an otherwise completely divided country, whilst actually 'stacking the decks' with 'ideologues'? Ok, so it didn't work out great for Colin Powell but then, he didn't tow the company (oopz, Bush, ooops, Karl Rove) line... :D

Bottom line then, with the supreme court's Sandra Day O'Conner resigning (a respected moderate conservative) and with the supreme court sitting currently at a 5-4 conservative edge, this is a power play by Bush, Rove and Co, for the "gift" that will keep on giving ideologically, long after they're gone and on the heels of a similar appointment (John Roberts).

In the words of Richard Nixon (whilst trying to stack his deck) "The supreme court doesn't make law afterall, they simply interpret the law and give THEIR judgements"....

K, no worries then... :D

Hmmm seems the Dems are happy about this and Repubs aren't from the news I watched last night. :o

Right Brit, that's the early "spin" at least...

This is just the Dem's allowing traditional first week honeymoon period following nominee announcement and the repub's strategy is to have the likes of Rush (I'm clean now) Limbaugh and other hard right fannies bleat on publicly about how 'moderate' she is and appear critical of Dubya for choosing such a softeee...This smacks of Karl Rove's playbook.

Basically, she may appear non-partisan (if anyone wants to buy that) but the fact remains, she was Bush's personal attorney and has NEVER been a judge even at State, county or ANY level, now she's nominated for the supreme court??? :D

Course, Tom Delay (republican whip on ice) had no comment since he has his hands caught in the cookie jar at the mo.. (Delay's woes) :o

All in all, great tragi-comedy if nothing else (even the Bard might yawn tho;)

Bush's Unqualified Court Pick Never Had Abortion, Lesbian Sex

I greeted the news of Harriet Oleson's nomination with both giddy elation that a womyn was chosen to replace Sweet Sandy, and the unbridled, feminine hysteria of a progressive who has seen far too many of Bush's Fourth Reich cronies handed positions of power.

Although I would have preferred someone more transcendent of the constrictive binds of gender identity, a female justice would at least have a grasp of the issues that consume the every day lives of most American women - namely gay rights and abortion on demand. However, one glance at her unimpressive list of credentials reveals a shocking truth. During her entire career, Oleson never once held a membership in any human rights organizations, such as MoveOn.org or Dykes on Bikes. Also curiously absent from her resume are records of any pro bono work for civil liberties groups like NARAL or NAMBLA, and she has been heard speaking less than enthusiastically about abortion on at least one occasion. In fact, there's significant doubt that she has ever had an abortion herself, or even recommended one to a friend. Add up all these strikes against her and one has little choice but to conclude that Harriet Oleson is incapable of defending our Constitutional rights as they exist, let alone conjuring new ones up out of the ether.

One of the most basic of those Constitutional rights is a Woman's Right to Choose; monumental in importantance, yet so fragile that the Framers wrote it in a secret code to protect it from strict constructionists who would seek to strike it down. Like the Right to Privacy, Right to a Living Wage, and Right to Free Health Care, there are hundreds of such secret rights hidden deeply within the seemingly undecipherable words of the Constitution, just waiting for another Harry Blackmun to come along and awaken them from their centuries-old slumber.

While someone unfamiliar with the laws of the land will be less likely to interpret them literally, I'm afraid that Oleson's doesn't have the necessary background, abortions, or lesbian sexual encounters to effectively stare at the Constitution like a Magic Eye poster until those secret rights suddenly materialize. Therefore, I cannot in good conscience endorse her nomination.

Thanks to Blame Bush

:o

I can't stand these ghastly middle-aged Jewish-American women. They are foul shrews - kvetching and self-promoting.

There was a horrible example of the NY Jewess in CSFB when I worked there, "Barbara Biel", I called her Biel-zebub.

LOL BM, well done indeed! :D:D

PS, I hear Karl Rove (aka "The Knee Capper") needs a spin doctor and if Harriet's qualified to be a supreme court judge, then heck, you're a shoe-in for the job! :D

Moog, Some Khunyings could qualify in these parts... (same hair n attitude at least, nothing to do with jewishness;). NEVER cross the road, even at a controlled intersection, in front of a HI SO shopping mall, whilst confronted with a chauffered Benz with "big hair' occupants, or slimey "money fell off the truck" chao por type guys... you'll lose! :o Kinda like going up against Karl Rove's republican machine :D

"Harriet Miers, as you know, has no experience. Apparently no experience is the main requirement to be a Bush appointee." --David Letterman
