Chelyabinsk State Symphony Orchestra - What Is It?

The Bangkok Festival of Arts & Music is advertising a concert by the Chelyabinsk State Symphony Orchestra on Friday (Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Ravel). However, searching Google for Chelyabinsk Orchestra gives only 3 hits - two of which are from Thai newspapers, and one from an Indian newspaper. Does anyone know if this is a real, professional orchestra? Perhaps it's better known under a different spelling? Is it worth paying to hear them play?

The Bangkok Festival of Arts and Music hires very cheap Russian orchestras because they work for almost nothing. I am sure the quality will be quite good, as the Russian musicians have a wonderful lineage of quality conservatory education. But frankly, Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra is equal or better by any measure of quality.

But, unfortunately, you have to attend concerts at Thailand Cultural Center - a concrete monstrosity with tiny seats, crappy acoustics, and no renovation since it was built.

Chel is just one of so many big Russian cities with a few 100.000 people-who in state-run times all had their own orchestra, circus, ballet etc. Since capitalism started to hit they had to scramble to still make a living and as above they hire out to anyone willing to pay a few rubles + transportation. As to your quality Q; for Russky this usualy boils down to if they are sober or not- that big factor that seems to determine any Russky fullfillment of any job.
