That actually does not surprise me to read Longtom's comment.... not all of Samui (or Koh Phengan) roads are a rubbish heap! (it's some of the garbage dumps that are a problem, as I previously posted... )...

Yes, there are areas of piled up garbage around, which is never nice to see or smell..... but when I returned from Malaysia and Singapore last year, I felt generally speaking Samui streets and roads were fairly respectable....

The sand is a problem and the island(s) and they probably need to invest in mechanical sweepers. I did see a Kubota tractor with a blade in front driving down the ring road the other day .... not sure if that was to try to clear sand.... Given the nature of the soil and run off, of the islands, it not an easy problem to solve...

What surprised me on my travels last year was how much litter the was around the areas of Singapore and some parts of Malaysia, I visited...

I give the two "road sweepers" on my Soi full marks for doing a good job!

This is the collection point where I leave my garbage. It looks like this 5 - 6 days a week.

All of the stuff that is left behind is what I would call 'fly-tipping' or illegal dumping. It's the residents that are the problem.

I agree with Jimmy. The street cleaners, the roving re-cycling people and the garbos do a great job under difficult conditions.

the teesabahn issue all the house books on samui,these usually relate to a building permit which shows clearly where all properties are on samui [so no excuse for not finding us ]

if the property has chanote title ,this is surveyed by satellite to a few centimeters

so they are clever/thoughfull enough to take your money for building permits /land titles/

but are not clever enough to find where you live for rubbish disposal fees ?????

give me a break

they should just make rubbish collection compulsory for all and send [or deliver] an annual account

maybe they should work with the police and gave them 30% for an escort while they collected their fees they would earn a fortune

why don't thai visa samui organize a meeting with the mayor so we can put forward our suggestions for improving samui

then at least there will be something new to whinge about

ive some great ideas as far as smoking in restaurants go

for me this is much more disgusting than some rubbish around the place ,having to suck in others smoke while we are trying to dine on some nice food is downright horrid

the boys in brown would make much more tea money wandering around airconditioned restaurants than standing in the middle of the hot sun stopping helmet less riders

we could also pay the immigration a [legal??say 30%] portion for a stamp in the passport [for us legal working ,taxpayers]

so we dont have to do visa trips

Just an observation up here in the NE of the island.

the garbage guys have been doing a great job over this holiday period. I have been taking a truckload of garbage every day (sometimes two truckloads) to the collection point that I use and every time that I have visited or driven by, it has been clear of garbage as well as clean and tidy. They must be collecting 2 or 3 times a day!

The garbage trucks have indeed been at it, however, they just clear the garbage bins and leave any 'residual garbage' laying around, for this garbage somebody on a motorbike with sidecar comes along and cleans it up. At least in most places.

However, near 'the Park', people still use that long stretch as a dumping ground, despite various efforts of cordoning parts of the road off.

i remember a few years back during a very wet rainy season black water was pouring across the road from that dumping site and the stench was unbearable! I can't understand why it still remains after so many years and it very unfair to the local people living nearby

Note the woman with the pink top ready to cross the road to dispose of her rubbish which consisted of Styro foam boxes and plastic bags then you will see the foreign lady with white hair is taken aback then she point's this out to her husband and son. Welcome to Samui.

an example

just opened past the big buddha entrance [heading to choeng mon] is a row of shops

theres about 8 shops ,one is a bar[and others opening ] and at that bar was many farangs drinking away thier holidays

alas theres no toilet facilities near these new shops so as this new shopping area is on the waterfront all just went and urinated straight into the sea

which is totally visible from the causeway out to big buddha [yes what a sight ]

not sure what happens with the next urge and where is the tessabahn regulations for these shops to dispose of thier sewerage ??????

utterly disgraceful from the Mayor downwards ,land owners, shop owners ,and the patrons of the establishments
