Local opinion to be considered for Krabi power plant, Pongsak vows

KRABI: -- The government may reconsider its plan to build a coal-fired electricity plant in Krabi province if there was strong opposition, Energy Minister Pongsak Ruktapongpisal said.

He said the government would consider the needs of the local people first and would not repeat the mistake of the previous government in pushing ahead with the construction of the electricity plant in Thap Sakae district in Prachuap Khiri Khan, which had led to a long struggle, including casualties.

The minister vowed that the people of Tab Sakae in Krabi province would not suffer the same fate. Local communities in Krabi had earlier staged protests, saying it would affect famous tourist destinations along the coast.

"The reason a plant project is not pursued is because it relies on the wrong process. We need to create a learning process and if local people oppose it, then we must principally look into their demands," the minister said.

Pongsak said the ministry would heed the voices of local people in various areas and see if they wish to have a plant built or not. He said the local administrator at Hua Sai district of Songkhla province had expressed the desire to have a coal-generated electricity plant built there.

The ministry would also provide local communities all health and environment-related information. He added that the project to build a coal-fired power plant in Dawei, Myanmar, capable of generating 4,400 megawatts was still on track and offered an alternative to help meet Thailand's electricity demand.

As for nuclear energy, the minister said the issue should be considered in future energy plans as electricity consumption in the Kingdom is growing by 4 per cent per annum and would double in the next 10 years.

Pongsak said the government must consider the situation 20 to 30 years ahead, and nuclear energy provided a low-cost alternative.
