PDRC leader paid Bt120,000 in compensation after Shinawatra linked hotel cancels bookings

BANGKOK: -- Anti-government protester monk Buddha Issara yesterday received Bt120,000 in compensation after his booking at a Bangkok hotel owned by the Shinawatra family fell through.

He had sought to book the rooms as part of protest activities targeting Shinawatra family businesses.

The monk yesterday led a group of protesters to SC Park Hotel on Praditmanutham Road, having paid a Bt4,200 deposit. The hotel is owned by SC Asset Corp.

Upon arrival at the hotel, the monk showed the hotel manager the receipt for the rooms.

The hotel manager informed the monk that the hotel had to cease operations for the day because guests were frightened.

The monk and his group left after agreeing to receive the compensation payout.

Suthep Thaugsuban, secretary-general of the anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), said protesters would rally at all business sites linked to the Shinawatra family - with the exception of Rama IX Hospital and Shinawatra University.

Move to block finances

He said the Yingluck Shinawatra-led caretaker government survived because money was power, so the PDRC would try to disrupt the family's financial sources. Suthep also urged his supporters to stop using AIS mobile-phone services.

That is despite the InTouch group, which runs AIS, claiming the Shinawatra family no longer had shares in the group.

Takorn Tantasit, National Broadcasting and Telecommuni-cations Commission secretary-general, said the number of people porting from other networks to AIS's cellular network yesterday was around 1,000 while the number of AIS subscribers porting to different networks was around 600.

He said the movement was typical.

Anusorn Iamsa-ard, spokesman for the ruling Pheu Thai Party, labelled the PDRC's campaign to disrupt the businesses as bullying, and wondered how Suthep would feel if his businesses were affected.

He said many businesses targeted by the PDRC were no longer owned by Shinawatras, adding that the disruptions adversely affect Thailand’s economy.

He called on the Securities and Exchange Commission to take action against Suthep after he called on investors to dump stock linked to the Shinawatra family.

Proof the guy is not really a monk but just acting it out. Real monks are not allowed to handle money, and certainly wouldn't be seen doing it in public - his handler is there to do such things.

One other thing smells like Nation BS - the compensation sounds like it was for the whole group booking, not just for monk-E.

As to who owns what , any check on share a registry, will tell where the Shinawatra's plant their money , that's if they are not hidden behind bogus company names or fake names , that no one knows about.

Yeah right! Thai monks should follow the Theravadin Vinaya - have a look at the Nissaggiyas 18 and 19.

Well, I had a look and basically they are a set of very very old rules are they not, and number 18 simply says they are not to say the money is theirs. What is your point? To put the value of the rules in to perspective, number 16 is... the monk must not "Carrying raw wool for more than 48 km."

And at the end of the day, all 30 rules are simply made such that if they are broken then the monk must confess it to another monk, once that is done then all is well. Clearly a set of rules that were nothing to do with Buddha, but the power hungry who came afterwards, trying to use religion to establish their own power base....seems to happen a lot in religion.

yes he is forbidden .....but he is just another one of those who take Buddhism not very seriously...... Monk?? This man is not a monk - he is an extortionist.

The "monk" reportedly “led the protesters out of their campsite on Chaeng Wattana Road … eventually stopped at SC Park Hotel, a … business subsidiary of the Shinawatra family.”

In an anti-democrat “tradition” of being above the law, a “brief fistfight ensued when a hotel employee took pictures of the protesters. He was instantly mobbed by PCAD guards and instructed to delete his photos, claiming that only registered journalists are allowed to photograph the protests.”

Prevented from entering the hotel lobby “to occupy the building,” it is reported that the Buddha Issara told the “managers that he had reserved 10 rooms in the hotel for his stay” and produced a receipt. Still the “managers refused to allow Buddha Issara to enter the hotel, he then offered to book the entire hotel (maybe he is one of those jet-setting monks you know....... the jerk must have lots of money though )…, an offer the managers once again refused.

The monk reportedly “instructed his guards to block entrances to the building instead. Fearing clashes, many guests checked out and left the venue, and the hotel management closed down the hotel entirely…”. The monk was offered a refund but he demanded “the hotel pay a compensation for wasting his time and cancelling his booking. He also threatened to file lawsuit against the hotel.”

This man is an insult to every real practicing monk in Thailand - another one of these "famous" monks who does not have a clue what Buddhism is about - the stupid grin on his face while he is counting the money says everything about him - pure greed is driving him.

I do believe in karma - and he as a "monk" should know whats coming at him!

You cannot expect objective, investigative journalism from The Nation. Their political allegiance is clear. Their editorials and news reports are pearls of wisdom if you are an unquestionning believer in the cause they support, barely disguised propaganda to everyone else.
