Huge fire at oil recycle factory



BANGKOK: -- A huge fire broke out at a used oil recycling factory in Samut Sakhon Wednesday night causing heavy damages to the 5-rai property.

The fire at S.J. Oil factory happened at about 10.30 p.m. and by Thursday morning poisonous smokes are still billowing from the charred remains of the factory and oil containers and drums.

The fire was reported to start from a go down where used bunker oil, diesel oil and motor oil were kept.

About 20 employees working in the factory ran out shouting fire but could not help the fire from spreading because of sporadic explosions of more than a thousand of 500-litre oil drums.

The godown was quickly engulfed in flames while fire engines also faced difficulties in fighting the fire caused by oil.

About 50 fire engines arrived but could not keep the fire under control. Some turned to spray water around the gutted godowns to keep the fire from spreading to a nearby residential community.

Initial investigation revealed that the fire started from a boiler and quickly raged to nearby godowns where used oil were kept.

Neighbours reported poisonous gas from burning oil around the areas, while authorities are also checking if the factory operates legally.

I wouldn't want to be downwind of that. Hopefully the fire service had some foam to put on that fire or they were just making things worse. I can image too how bad the runoff will be (into sewers, klongs etc). What a mess.

Maybe, and its a very big maybe, with the Army apparently cracking down on the police we might start to see less of these illegal (unregulated) and dangerous activities around the country.

I want to know why this is not on national TV? no mention whatsoever on the TV, yet this is a huge fire.
