Choeng Mon Restaurant Rip Off

Last week called into a grill restaurant in Choeng Mon, they had a nice grill set up at the front and lots of fresh sea food and assorted meats.

Inspecting the goodies a waiter asked if I would like any further help

"yes, I like the look of the Tiger Prawns, how much are they?" You. Get 5 for 480 baht was the reply.

So I decided to give them a whirl, went in and ordered the Tiger Prawn with herbs and butter, a few moments later, the waiter serving my table came over and said, Sir these Prawns are bigger than usual, so will 4 be ok ? I said no, I want 5 like I was just told and proceeded to ask him if the Prawns had got bigger in the 90 seconds that had passed since the front of house had told me 5 ! , with a perplexed look he asked me another 2 times if 4 would be ok,, I told him I would go to another Restaurant, with that he said ok I'll get you 5. anyway I quite enjoyed the 5 prawns once they arrived, so again this week myself and the Wife called into same Restaurant, same scenario, asked at the front and was told 5 Prawns 480 baht, went in ordered two portions and I think you can guess what's coming here,,, only 4 Prawns per serving,,, so I told the waiter there were 2 prawns missing which equated to 20% of my meal and that I expected 20% discount on my bill! five minutes later 2 prawns appeared.

Now my point is this, last week when he tried to embarrass me into accepting less food, I noticed he did the same to some tourists who accepted his very kind offer to give them a 20% reduction in their food order, the Prawns are already expensive enough and they are preying on peoples polite nature, every 4 portions they sell they end up with one free portion... Keep an eye out for these Rip Off merchants and don't be embarrassed to get what you have already overpaid for.

Yes I find the Nepalese and burmease allot more rude than the Thais

I found Choeng Mon's restaurants to be pretty dog average when I was there for a few days in January.... much better elsewhere generally.

You don't know. Not far off what you pay in he markets etc... Agree some of these restaurants are PURE rip off.

Well from my shaky memory we were offered 700 Baht a kilo....and the price on the blackboards was 1200-1400 Baht.

The market at Plai Lem has some very cheap prices for unshelled prawns....but not been there for a while....maybe you lot have pushed them up since I was last there.

Certainly the mark up on tiger prawns is almost as big an earner as water.

Does anybody know why there are so many Nepalese business owners on the islands. I had some new neighbors around 2010 who were a family from Nepal. I was surprised as they all had new Thai passports even though they jrecently arrived in the country and could not speak,read or write Thai language. I'm guessing that after the Nepalese monarchy was abolished the ex royals could afford a Thai passport??
