BANGKOK: -- After going after electronic cigarettes, officials will begin a crackdown on the sale of shisha, the illegally-imported-yet-widely-smoked tobacco, after junta chief Gen. Prayuth Chanocha expressed concern about its popularity.

Tak Man arrested for excess of cooking gas

TAK: -- A joint force made up of police, the army and customs officials on Monday raided a house in Tak's Mae Sot district and confiscated 55 tanks of cooking gas kept in the house.


It detained Athipat Uppakara, 33, owner of house for having more cooking gas than permitted by law with intent to sell in Myanmar.

The suspect was earlier arrested on the same charge.

Surin province warns residents not to catch fish during its spawning season

SURIN, 18 August 2014 (NNT) – The Surin Provincial Fisheries Office has prohibited local fishermen from catching fish during its spawning season, which lasts from April to mid-September of every year.


Somchai Jianthipvilai, a high-ranking officer from the office, revealed that authorities have prevented fishermen from deploying their fishing gears during this period as part of an effort to conserve freshwater fish species.

The move imposes bans to use various types of fishing gear including nets and long-lines that are wider than 2 meters. Violators will be fined between 5,000 to 10,000 baht or sentenced to one year in jail, if they refuse to comply with the law.

However, aquaculture or fish farming as well as fishing for academic purposes are still allowed.

Budget bill approved in first reading

BANGKOK: -- The National Legislative Assembly Monday approved the 2015 fiscal year budget bill in the first reading with 183 votes.


Three NLA members abstained.

There are 197 NLA members and 192 registered their presence at the start of the budget bill debate. But when they cast the vote, only 186 were present.

EU raises humanitarian assistance to migrants in Thailand

Irrigation Department gathers ideas for water administration

BANGKOK, 18 August 2014 (NNT) –The Royal Irrigation Department is set to gather ideas from subcommittees of water administrations and public developments to clarify with people how best to cope with water problems.


Regional irrigation offices in north, central, and east of Thailand are scheduled to call for people’s opinions about water related developments and administration, from 8th to 12th September 2014.

The operational aspects of water administration include drought solutions, floods, and water quality exploration.

Mr.Lersak Rewtarkulpaiboon, the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has also requested that committees determine water administration policies in the area and keep people informed of the water situation, problems and solutions in order to effectively undertake measures and achieve the greatest benefit. The purpose of this meeting was not only to provide information and gather comments from people, but also to get buildings and new constructions prepared for any kind of water emergency, said the Director of the Office of Project Management Dr. Somkiat Prachamwong.

Thailand Detains Russian Citizen at Interpol’s Request

BANGKOK, August 18 (RIA Novosti) – A Russian citizen, accused of being part of a large criminal organization in Russia during the 1990s and 2000s, has been detained in the Thai coastal city of Pattaya, where he had been hiding for four years, a representative of the Russian Embassy in Thailand told RIA Novosti on Monday.
