Hi,

I've got the 1700 Baht version of Windows 7.

Original version but for sale in South East Asia only.

There are some restrictions with this version and one of them

is that you can't change the desktop background.

Does anyone know a way around this,I've had the same background for 5 years now.

As I thought it seems that it has nothing to do with the South East Asia version but with the version you bought which I guess is Windows 7 Starter

Windows 7 Starter is the edition of Windows 7 that contains the fewest features. It is only available in a 32-bit version and does not include the Windows Aero theme. The desktop wallpaper and visual styles (Windows 7 Basic) are not user-changeable.

AFAIK these were the only "Southeast Asia Edition(s)" of Windows 7.

They said the following printed on the Certificate of Authenticity (COA):

(Pre-activated OEM versions)

  • Windows 7 Starter OA SEA
  • Windows 7 Home Premium OA SEA
  • Windows 7 Pro OA SEA

(OEM Versions)

  • Windows 7 Starter SEA OEM
  • Windows 7 Home Premium SEA OEM

The following boxed "Full Retail Package Version" have "Southeast Asia Only" printed on the box:

  • Windows 7 Home Premium
  • Windows 7 Pro
  • Windows 7 Ultimate

The ones with "OA" printed on the COA all used Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Activation also known as OA (Offline Activation) which means they came pre-activated from an OEM.

You cannot transfer "OEM" versions to another computer. In other words, if the motherboard is changed they can't be reactivated.

The Southeast Asia Edition(s) can only be activated or reactivated in:

  • Indonesia
  • Laos
  • Malaysia
  • Myanmar
  • Philippines
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam

Interestingly, even though Singapore is a part of Southeast Asia is excluded from the geographically restricted (SE Asia only) activation list, but Malaysia is included.
