PM holds talks with Hun Sen at ASEM summit

MILAN, 17 October 2014 (NNT) - Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha on Thursday held a bilateral meeting with his Cambodian counterpart on the sideline of the 10th Asia-Europe Summit.

General Prayut thanked the Cambodian government for its support for the new government and assured them that the previous border dispute would not damage ties between the two neighbours.

He earlier stressed that good ties with neighbouring countries were essential, as Thailand did a high-volume of cross-border trade with Cambodia and other nations.

Development of special economic zones, roads, customs facilities and crossings along the border were also discussed during the meeting. General Prayut proposed the setting up of an initial SEZ near Cambodia’s Poipet, while Cambodian authorities will consider setting up a similar estate in their territory to boost trade.

Important items on the meeting agenda included enhancing cooperation in the areas of tourism, energy and investment. Both parties agreed to discuss the projects again when General Prayut visited Cambodia during October 30-31.

The border disputes over the temple were just a Yellow beat up to stir up nationalistic rage to try to influence domestic politics.

Now that we've had the coup, no need for the sideshow.

Pity the souls from both sides who needlessly died during the farce

They make a good pair rolleyes.gif

Not really. One is a professional soldier who rose to lead the Royal Thai Army before becoming the PM following a coup to remove a dysfunctional caretaker government that couldn't or didn't want to keep law and order.

The other, well Google his past and more recent exploits, and you'll see why he definitely is quite different.

He didn't just wake up one day and "become" the PM. He was appointed by legislature that he had handpicked following a coup he instigated after approximately 4 hours of talks between politicians on both sides of a 7 month dispute failed to resolve their differences - Quelle surprise.

Takes a bit of a shine off your attempt at a hagiography, I'm afraid.

Going to see him again in a few days in Cambodia?

Nobody else want to chat?

Noto with Prayuth...he can only speak Thai:)

Are you sure Chan-o-Cha doesn't speak Chinese, Esan, or even Burmese for that matter? rolleyes.gif

With a surname like that it's a wonder he doesn't speak Irish

Whatever happened to Hun Sen's "eternal friend" Mr T??

General paying better??coffee1.gif

Actually you just managed to insult two Prime Ministers at the same time.

PM Prayut, by suggesting he paid PM HunSen, and PM HunSen twice, by first suggesting he is bought by his Thai counterpart and secondly even by a private Thai businessman who he (i.e. Hun Sen) had appointed as 'advisor' on economical matters.

Neither of whom was democratically elected.

HS, for one, has been in power for decades, refuses to allow fair elections, has police shoot live ammo at protesters demanding them (finally), and calls himself a "deveda" (god) who thus can not relinquish power, and thus intends to put his son in power after himself.

A waste of public money, he had to go all the way to Milan to meet Hun Sen ?

I know Thais' knowledge of the outside world is limited but !

he could have gone to say iran, Iraq, Turkey, Britain, The USA, Zimbabwe or twenty other countries....on trade missions , no shopping trips...none of that nonsense... just for the betterment of Thais as per previous practice.

You nailed it Fabby.

Now accept it and move on.

The trip to Cambodia will be just to meet an unfortunate Thai girl who was trafficked into a dysfunctional family and an ultimately failed national alliance to form a greater dictatorship in SE Asia.

One small point fabulous one.... the General received Royal Assent. You want to argue about that?

I'm sure you do...but can't for a few months just yet.

Exactly what was needed to break the stalemate and unneccessary deaths

To all those cynics who say "Typical of a Thai bumpkin. Get the chance of a lifetime to meet 50 world leaders, yet prefer to hide himself in the Asian ghetto", ....

.... in his defence, I only add that the General has stated that he will be PM for 1 more year only, then step down, so he has no need to meet nor socialise with Western leaders (who won't understand the Thai way anyway).

Hun Sen and Abe are the only ones who took a meeting so far.

With both PMs accepted as PMs, you're just distracting.

PM holds talks with Hun Sen at ASEM summit

' Birds of a feather, flock together '

Afterwards , they played an important game of marbles over Khao Phra Wihan and who's turn it was to get uppity.

You should have seen the gathering of birds in Milan rolleyes.gif

It seems Gen. Prayut is missing out on the opportunity to speak with other constitutional monarchies to learn more about how they handle democracy without military coups, maintain stable economies, provide for higher education, etc. Of course the reverse is also true as those other constitutional monarchies need to learn more about how military coups can improve their own societies (LOL).

Well, PM Prayut probably asked his Italian hosts for details on how they finally got rid of Silvio Berlusconi and how they think to prevent such power abusing billionair to slip through again.

BTW how does one speak with 'constitutional monarchies', especially when in Italy only?

Well the opportunity was there. The 'E' in the title of the gathering should give you a hint, Italy was the host country sure, but........................coffee1.gif
