BANGKOK: -- The Tourism Authority of Thailand has reached out to three foreign celebrities to help it revive the tourism industry in the aftermath of the deadly bombing in August.

TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn said today that famous Hong Kong actress Michelle Yim Wai-ling, known better as Mai Suet, along with another popular actor Simon Yam Tak-Wah or Ren Dahua will be in Bangkok on September 22. They have volunteered to help Thailand, seeking no fee for the promotion. Mai Suet will perform in front of the Erawan Shrine.

During August and September, Thailand is expected to lose 1.3 million international visitors and nearly Bt70 billion in tourism revenue.

These.ambassadors wont help at all

Noone knows them outside Thailand and certainly no foreigners know them. So the execs at TAT. Know exactly zero about advertising this country as a destination. Colossal waste of time and money. These are old washed up second rate actors

how are they going to help?

That is because they are famous Hong Kong Chinese actors.

Known by millions of Chinese.

Simon Yam - Actor
Simon Yam, also known as Yam Tat-wah, is a veteran Hong Kong-based actor and film producer. He received international acclaim for his performances in international film festival hits and box offices ... Wikipedia
Mai Suet - Actress
She is the first Hong Kong television actress to sweep three Best Actress awards from a single role across Asia Pacific, and also the first Hong Kong actress to win Best Actress at the prestigious Asian Television Awards.

The latest campaign, 'Thainess', has been running for a while on Thai Airways ( and presumably other media). It is truly awful, trying to cover about 15 towns/regions most viewers have never heard of. ...

I don't know who has the contract for this but they are churning out some ordinary material. The benchmark should be Malaysia, Truly Asia (running in various iterations for 15 years). Thailand has the better product but is streets behind in marketing. The other great campaign is the USA: Land of Dreams (based on a Roseanne Cash song/video).

The Thai campaign is very 70s....

Come on, don't let facts get in the way of some Thai bashing.

They are supposed to be known where they target the campaign, in this case Hong Kong and PRC. But our usual Thai bashers ask their Thai GF what they know about them. Hilarious!

No one knows them in Thailand.

They are from China. You know, the country that sends more tourist to Thailand than all of Europe combined.

Before ascribing any significance to your somewhat commonplace post, one would need to know a little bit more about your Thai "wife".

TOURISM
HK superstars join in drive for Thai tourism

Suchat Sritama

BANGKOK: -- Celebrities from here and abroad are being enlisted to help campaign for Thai tourism in the wake of the bloody bombing at the Erawan Shrine last month.

On Tuesday, two Hong Kong superstars are scheduled to visit Bangkok to help promote Thailand's charms to Greater China.

On Monday, Thai actor Nadech Kugimiya will appear on media for the third year as the brand ambassador of Thai AirAsia.

The tourism minister is now on an overseas trip to sell Thai hospitality and restore confidence.

Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said yesterday that famous Hong Kong actress Michelle Yim Wai-ling, who is better known in Thailand as Mai Suet or Mi Xue, along with popular actor Simon Yam Tak-Wah, or Ren Dahua, will be in Bangkok on September 22.

Mai Suet is scheduled to pray at the Erawan Shine, which was damaged by the blast, while Ren Dahua will meet with tourism authorities to help push Thai tourism. Both are invited to help rebuild tourists' confidence without pay.

From August-September, Thailand is expected to lose 1.3 million international visitors and nearly Bt70 billion in revenue. The industry is expected to bounce back next quarter.

TAT expects that both the Chinese superstars would help encourage many more tourists from mainland China as well Hong Kong and Taiwan to come back to Thailand.

On September 15, TAT's office in Los Angeles hired a Hollywood actress, Elisabeth Rohm, to wear and present Thai silk at the Threads of Thailand event, which was staged to introduce Thai culture and Thai silk to Americans. Tourism Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul is now in Russia. Although Russians are hexed by economic problems and a weak currency, one million of them are expected to troop to Thailand this year.

This week, TAT welcomed the 21 millionth visitor, meaning the country is on track to exceed the target of 28.8 million visitors for this year.

This shows that confidence in Thailand as a travel destination remains higher than ever as the peak season approaches.
