3,000 graduates in limbo as they may not get their degrees in time

BANGKOK: -- About 3,000 graduates of Assumption University have been thrown into confusion by the prospect that they may not be able to receive their degrees on November 22 as earlier scheduled.

The confusion stems from the fact that the university council has not yet approved the granting of the degrees to the graduates for the 2014 academic year because the council’s meeting on September 17 failed to take place after 13 council members didn’t show up.

Ms Ploypailin Laoprainark, a representative of the graduates, admitted many of her peers were worried that they might not get their degrees and this would hamper their job applications. She suggested that Education Minister Dapong Rattanasuwan steps in to resolve the problem.

It was reported that Mr Anusak Anusonthiwong, director of business and legal advisory centre of Assumption University, that on Friday lodge a complaint with the Office of Higher Education secretary-general Mr Phinit Ratananukul to intervene to resolve the internal conflict in the university which may prevent the graduates from receiving their degrees in time.

The registration office of the university however confirmed that the graduation ceremony would remain unchanged on November 22 and the graduates would be required to register from September 28 to October 17.

Sounds like these 13 council members don't take their job seriously or have a beef going on with the university. I expect this publicity will motivate full attendance at the next meeting called unless they want the govt to step in causing a loss of face.

BA`s and MA`s are not worth the paper they are printed on in Thailand.

Don`t think they are recognised abroad.

You don't know what you're talking about.....!

Frankly I would take a good Assumption graduate any day in preference to one from Chula or Thammasat.

Unless a young Thai person has outstanding qualities that shines through, then they are just another one of the millions of Thai people that have a degree.

Pretty much the same in any country that requires degrees for the simplest jobs! USA springs to mind!

That about sums it up.

Another point, that if mummy and daddy have a few bob and are well connected, this is also head starter to finding a promising career in Thailand. But I suppose that`s also the same globally.

Correct-o-mundo... A foreign national with a MA or MBA can get a H1B visa from a US company in a heartbeat... The only downside is the pay will be 60% of what a US employee would make and you are more or less a slave as the company can revoke your status at any time... No sponsor, no visa...

On the other hand, there is a glut of US college graduates with MA, MBA and PhD degrees that are living at home with mom and dad because they can't get a job... Why, because all the H1B foreigners took our jobs!!!

I will never understand many Thai's fixation with getting more and more MA'BA's, Masters etc it makes little difference.

They seem to finish their first university, start work for a few years, then quit to do a masters when 30+ years old thinking it will improve their salaries etc.

In reality, they will waste 3 years doing it, and then go straight back into the old job with no reflection in salary, probably just an inflated sense of self worth.

They would be better off just getting into the work force and staying there.

I know quite a few Thais and foreigners that have degrees from mediocre Thai universities, but have better jobs and higher income than 90% of the people ridiculing Thai university degrees. Some of them have careers in either Japan, Europe or the US. Companies do not recruit people solely on the name of their university. Its the complete package: degree, abilities and charisma.

I do agree that many Thai students lack the complete package, but to say that a degree from a Thai university is worthless is just not true.

Most employers in Thailand DO pay a higher monthly salary the more degree paperwork you have. A friend who works as middle - upper management at the electoral commission went from 70,000k baht a month (MA)to 100,000k baht a month when he got his PHD. At my wife's work to go from BA to MA can be approximately 5k more depending on department. Edited by casualbiker

why would one meeting delay an entire graduating class from receiving their degree/transcript??

Because the council has to approve the list of graduands. Those members who didn't turn up without good cause should be sacked.

They were all 301 yards away, getting smashed & couldn't be arsed to tromp back to work.
