Possible to open a personal bank account in Malaysia?

I travel a lot to Malaysia. It would be more practical and reduce my banking costs if I could open a personal bank account with ATM card at a Malaysian bank.

Is this possible as a 'tourist' in Malaysia? Does anyone have experience of this?

Hi.. i phone the bank and they said you need to walk in to any of the branch to enquire and it is the branch discretion whether to process the application or not.. quite similar to Bangkok

It is not easy unless you are in MM2H or have a work permit. I tried about 18 months ago and none of the local banks would entertain me. In the end I went to HSBC because I have aPremier account in my home country and HSBC could not have been more helpful. Job done in under an hour.

Suggest, if you have an account overseas with a bank that operates in Malaysia, you try them. A referral from your home bank might help.
